Hate These Pfluger Spinning Reels 2024

fishing user avatarbillm67 reply :

I hate these Pflueger reels...everytime I pick one up....I end up buying another one!  First I bought a

president and I really liked it!  I put it on a Berkley Lightning Rod and that little rig makes a great inexpensive spinning setup.  Next I bought a purist reel to put on good Bass Pro rod and that is one of my favorite rigs.  I bought a new Berkley Cherrywood spinning rod for my son (I love these Berkley rods they are great values!)  I went in to Bass Pro to look for a reasonably priced reel for this rod and picked up a Pflueger Trion.  It felt just as smooth as the other two I own.  I would be hard pressed to say this one is a "cheaper" reel...even though it cost less money. I need to stop looking at Pflueger spinning reels, as I don't need any more spinning reels.

LOL.... HaHaHa, I thought it was going to be a all negative rant! Too funny!!

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Pflueger definitely makes the best spinning reel IMO.

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

Value to price ratio is good with these reels

fishing user avatarjignfule reply :

That "President" is hard to beat for the money

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

If you're gonna spend less than 70 bucks on a spinning reel better make it a Pfluger.

fishing user avatarbillm67 reply :

I bought another one as I have a good spinning rod that has a junk bass pro reel.  I bought a Purist off Dunn's for 39.88.  I bought it on Friday and they shipped it for free via USPS Priority Mail for free (and it went out the same day to boot!).  I have not held one in my hands...but it is the step up from the President.  I think I am set for spinning reels.  Now if i could just find some baitcasters that have the same high quality for such low prices.

Agreed. Just wish the Supreme xt and Patriarch continued the progression. They feel like the $70 reels.
fishing user avatarLong Mike reply :

I am a Pfleuger Phreak.  I have owned Trions, Presidents, and Patriarchs.  The Patriarch is very light weight and is a sweetheart of a reel.  All of the aforementioned reels perform admirably, but I think the best bang for the buck is the President.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I have a trion, 3 supremes, medalist and an arbor, none have ever needed any kind of service, 3 of them are used in saltwater.  I have other brands that are just as good in performance but some have had durability issues.

fishing user avatarSTPC reply :

The title of the post had me intrigued.  I was waiting for somebody to come up w/a complaint about Pfluger spinning reels, but it seems they have earned another vote of confidence.

fishing user avatarJar11591 reply :

I bought a Pflueger President this year. No reason to ever by a spinning reel other than the President. Compared to all my other spinning reels, including a couple Shimanos, the President is by FAR my favorite.

fishing user avatarMaster Bait'r reply :

I always felt the Supreme XT was such a fantastic value. Sure it lacks the flair of the patriarch, but it has all the "big deal" goodies and a low enough price point (as well as a faster retrieve too) to be way more reel than anything else at that money IMO. Smooth as warm butter, silent and never had a mechanical issue. Two thumbs WAY up.

fishing user avatarJThoms38 reply :

Anyone have any insight on the pflueger casting reels? I have the president spinning and I don't know if I should pick up a pflueger for my next casting set up.

fishing user avatarjoeeagles36 reply :

in the last 10 years or so I bought the gold medalist, the president, the purist, and a trion . just got the purist this year and I cant say enough good things about these reels for their price. decided to start using baitcasters and got a lews speed spool though, didn't like pflueger baitcaters, so I went to lews. but definitely love pflueger spinning reels for the price.

fishing user avatarbillm67 reply :

I haven't seen anyone that has a Purist.  They were too cheap to pass up.  Mine should be here tommorow.

fishing user avatarbassin is addicting reply :

i own 2 President's and 2 Supreme's and never had any trouble at all..

fishing user avatargramps50 reply :

I am another Pflueger fan, I started buying Trions then decided to try the President. At that point I was/hooked and started replacing the Trions with Presidents. Now I have 3 Purist that I bought at Dunn's for $39.88. I have one Abu Garcia that I found and it doesn't measure up to my Pflueger's.

The only difference I can find between the President & the Purist is the drag. The President uses a wet felt drag & the Purist a carbon fiber.

Pflueger reels rule!

fishing user avatarjerzeeD reply :

Love my Pfluegers. Have owned Trions, Presidents, President XT, Medalists, Purist, Supreme, and Patriarch. All good trouble free reels with minimal maintenance.

fishing user avatarPreytorien reply :

I have a little Trion that I use with a Berkley rod for my ultralight bass-panfish rod. I love that reel. It was my first "serious" reel back when I started, and its worked like a champ ever since.

fishing user avatarOntarioFishingGuy reply :

I have a Trion, a supreme, and a Supreme XT. Honestly, the supreme XT has been disappointing. The screw that attached the bail to the rotor fell out and was stripped, so I epoxied it back in place. Also, it makes a ticking noise every turn. It is very smooth and the drag rocks though.

Dont shoot me for reviving an old thread! Is the c.f. drag worth the price difference between the purist and president? Anyone have exprience with both? Academy has the purist combo on sale but ive had my eye on the bps president combo for a while now

fishing user avatarDiggy reply :

Picked up a supreme mgx on sale for 60 thanks to bassresource members.  So far so good. The president and the arbor have been reliable.

Had 2 Trions (still have one) and 2 Patriarch XT baitcast reels.  The Trions are older reels that won't win any beauty contests and aren't the lightest.  They are excellent reels for the price.  I got both used.  One came with a light braid.  I tried a 10" ribbontail worm weightless and it was backlash city for me.  At least one guy on here said he had no problem throwing light weights with his.   I admit to not being nearly as good a caster as most on here.  It took a trip to DVT for cleaning.  At his suggestion I spooled on heavier line (17# mono), mounted it on a Heavy rod with a correct weight lure for the rod, and it hasn't backlashed once since then.  I get excellent casting distance with it.  A young guy in NC is using the other Trion on a MH-XFand loves it.  These reels use centrifugal brakes. They have an aluminum frame.

The XT was their flagship and is lighter at 6.8 oz.  It is also a fine looking reel.  The blue finish appears to be very durable.  It uses dual brakes.  A 10" worm and 3/0 hook is a breeze to cast with this reel.  I think I read somewhere that they came standard with ABEC5 bearings, but don't quote me on that.  I don't have any experience with the newer model Pfluegers.  Based on my experience with older models from the high end and lower end it is my opinion they don't get the respect they deserve.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I've fished everything from the Trions to the Supreme XT with the only exceptions being the Purist and Arbor. I've had a couple problems with the Supreme XT and Supreme MGX but every time I've had a problem I've been taken great care of. Now I have a hard time coming up with a reason to spend the money to buy anything over the President, that's about as bulletproof as a spinning reel as I've ever owned.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Have 6 Pfluegers never a problem with any of them, but nothing lasts forever.  My most used freshwater reel is a Supreme 30, it may be 5-7 years old.  5 years with 12 months of fishing almost daily might be a lifetime of fishing if I were in a different area, so nothing to complain about.  My Supreme was a bit sticky but loosened up after a couple of minutes, I thought the bail spring might be going too, still had mileage if I wanted to stay with it.  I sent it in to Pure Fishing, they called me the day they received it (yesterday) quite often they replace these reels and pay the shipping back, not this time.  Parts and labor plus cleaning would have been $60, but gave me the option of buying a new one for $55. plus shipping.  Looking forward for 5 years with my new one.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

The Bait Monkey loves you.

fishing user avatarGANGGREEN reply :

I just got three new Purists in different sizes but haven't had the opportunity to use them.  I can't wait and hope that I enjoy them as much as all of you.  One note, I keep seeing the that the only difference between the President and Purist is the drag but isn't the Purist also lighter?

fishing user avatar0119 reply :

Cabela's has the Supreme on sale right now for $40 off

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

I have a Supreme and two Supreme XTs. I think the Supreme is the best bang for the buck spinning reel out there. All three of mine have been flawless.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

As stated I bought a new supreme 30 instead of fixing my old one.  Can't say I did the wrong the thing but I am a little disappointed.  I have 2 other supremes 25 & 35 which are supreme, they work great.  My new one comes, first problem was a line stacking problem, took care of that.  The reel is not as smooth as the one I sent in, it's ok and I'm optimistic in time that it will get "broken in".  I may have got a bad reel, buying on line you can't hand pick the reel,  not knocking Pfluegers, still think a lot of bang for buck,.

fishing user avatarJtrout reply :

Love my president bought one for my dad

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

I've always been a Shimano fan. Have 6 of them now, from UL to the 4000 series. Very dependable reels. However, they've been increasing in price regularly, which is getting to be expensive. I got my first President this past spring. An UL 6920 for a 9' B n' M SHSS rod. Great match up. VERY smooth action. Casts beautifully. I couldn't be happier, especially at <$50.00! I'll be duplicating it again this spring. And I think I'll be buying more of these Presidents. :)

Same here, big fan of the previous model Sahara and Symetre but not so much the new models. I sold my Sahara FE and a couple sedonas and am replacing them with a Supreme MGX that I got for $37 at Dick's last week (thank you BR) and a couple presidents. This supreme would be a good deal at regular price but at the price I paid it was a steal!

fishing user avatarMichiganBass80 reply :

I LOVE the "Presidents"  I have my third one coming this Christmas.  I see no reason to buy anything else if something this inexpensive gets the job done.
