Crucial or IMX 2024

fishing user avatarcigarleaf reply :

I just bought a brand new Shimano 50MG and need a new rod for it. I was thinking of buying a G.Loomis ($260.00) Mag Bass IMX casting rod 783C 6'6"Med Hvy or a Shimano ($149.99) Crucial Cast Rod 6'6" Med Hvy CRC-66MH . I already have few St. Croix Avid rods and would like to try a different company for the MG.

Like Loomis says about this product - "great all-around rod", is what I looking into. Which one would you guys recommend?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

IMX

This is the series that set G. Loomis apart from the crowd

and made them what they are today. You will be VERY

pleased.

p.s. You're really going to like the CH50MG, too! That will

match up well with the MBR783C.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Shimano Crucial CRC-X610MH the rod that closed the G. Loomis gape  ;)

fishing user avatarBassoholics Anonymous reply :

Either will be a great rod, but I'm partial to Loomis. With that said, the last rod I bought was a Crucial because of the price. I love my IMX, but that Crucial I got is super sensitive, too.

I do have to wonder if they share R&D, since it would be a waste of money for them not to.

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

IMX > Crucial although both are good rods

fishing user avatarold bassman reply :

I fish with that model Loomis imx. I love it. It's matched with a Quantum PT tour 1171. I think the 50MG you have will be great!! You'll never put it down!! My Quantum is a little heavy and your 50MG weighs almost nothing. Good choice in reels. I never used the other rod you mentioned but the IMX is outstanding.

fishing user avatarbass wrangler569 reply :

IMX, Crucials are nice rods but they're no IMX IMO

fishing user avatarmidnighthrasher reply :

i recently picked up a 6'10 crucial mh xfast...crcc610mh... i put a curado on it and it feels awesome. i will be breaking it in this weekend

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

The Crucials are very nice...I bought one when they first came out. However, the IMX blank is significantly higher in quality (as is should be...it's $100 more). The IMX is one of the few blanks out there built on a pure carbon scrim. The others (to my knowledge) being the GLX, Croix LE, and the Batson RX8+. The IMX is noticeably more 'crisp'; a trait of a higher strain blank. When the Crucial first came out, rumors started online about the crucial 'using the IMX blank', even though the rods don't behave the same and are made in different countries. Good times....

That's because one's $150 and one's $250.

I'd take a Cumara over an IMX. Loomis makes nice rods, don't get me wrong, but I've sold mine. 70% performance, 30% name. Nice if you got $250+ for a rod.

I don't anymore.

Found a Kistler Magnesium to be one of the finest rods for $150. I don't need GLX sensitivity to catch a fish. Either he's going to hit my bait, or he's not.

Plus the Kistler's are far lighter than any GL3 or IMX. I fish from a 15' kayak, I need very light rods, and the Kistler fits the bill perfectly. And it's at the sweet spot of rod prices. $150 buys you a FINE rod now-a-days.

CRUCIAL

IMX

fishing user avatarskno reply :

IMX = amazing ;)

fishing user avatarHydrillaKilla reply :

Crucial !  i just dont think there is enough difference in the two to justify paying an extra $100 for the imx. my thinking is buy the crucial and spend the $100 you saved on some nice lucky craft baits!   ;D

fishing user avatarHook Set reply :

Consider a Cumara. Priced in between the 2 you mentoned.

I LOVE mine!

fishing user avatarLAO162 reply :

If you get the Crucial will you still be wondering if you should have gotten the IMX??  ;)

Not quite. Would I be getting 40% more of a rod to justify the $100 difference? If so, then yes, but I bet it's more along 10% better/lighter/sensitive, realistically.

Like previosly mentioned, save the $100 for some LC lures.

I bet a Crucial + LC = more fish than an IMX and no baits.  ;D

fishing user avatarSouth FLA reply :

I own a Cumara, owned a crucial and own some IMXs.  I would agree with the poster above about bang for buck with the Crucial being the winner there........,but for the extra cash you do get a better rod in the IMX.  Its a point of diminishing returns.

That's a good way in looking at it, save a $100. Very good info so far and it's hard choice to make. I asked a very similar question last summer, Crucial or Avid. That was a tough choice to, I went with a Avid and that was only a $20 difference. Thank God TW is out of stock on the 783C, gives me more time to decide.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

If the question is money, that's a personal decision.

If the question is "Which is a better rod?", the answer

is IMX. If you decide to buy the Crucial, sooner or later

you'll wish you had chosen the G. Loomis. It doesn't work

like that the other way around.

Even if I could afford a $250 rod, I wouldn't. The $150 price point seems to be where you get a quality blank with quality components and quality performance. Anything past that, and you're just getting more minute performance difference. Now maybe a GLX is a lot better than a Crucial, but now we're talking double to doubel.5 the original value.

I still say get the Crucial/Avid/Kistler and spend the rest on lures, a new reel, whatever.

Yes, the IMX is better, but in at least 95% of normal people's eyes, that $100 difference isn't usually justifiable. Now buying used is another option, but many people like to buy new. If the IMX was $200, I'd say pay the extra $50 and get the IMX, but it's not $50 more.

I would recommend if you want, to try and locate a used IMX, which will be about $160ish.

Otherwise go Crucial/Avid/Powell/Kistler. Best rods in the $150 range, brand new.

go with another avid my 51mg with a 7' avid got me a hawg today i might add haha good for the money

That's funny... absurdly wrong, but funny nonetheless!  If you are sticking to your argument, you will be the first person I have ever "known" that didn't think IMX was a good value, even though your choice is based on primarily cost, not performance.

If the OP has the money to spend, than I would strongly recommend the IMX.  The crucial is also a good stick, but that wasn't the question he asked.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I had a G. Loomis BCR804 GLX that someone stepped on and broke the tip, when I returned the GLX to have it replace I looked at a Shimano Crucial CRC-X610MH. After careful consideration and research I made the decision to give the Crucial a try and after owning it for a year the Crucial has proved to me to be just as sensitive as the GLX, at least in my hands it is. The difference to me is the additional 2 in length which gives a better feel of balance when coupled with my Calcutta. The medium heavy power and extra fast action was what I was looking for in a worm/jig rod.

G. Loomis BCR804 GLX

Length: 6' 8

Power: 4

Line Weight: 14-20

Lure Weight: 5/16-3/4

Power: Heavy

Action: Fast

Shimano Crucial CRC-X610MH

Length: 6' 10

Line: 10-20 lb

Lure: 3/8-3/4

Power: Medium Heavy

Action: Extra Fast

Oh yea I'll add I was completely satisfied with the GLX and would purchase another one but not for a worm/jig rod.

X2

I think a lot of people get the idea that past a certain price point there are no more good values. This is completely incorrect. Something can be expensive and still be a value based on its performance.

That's extremely funny. A $250 rod being a "good value"? You're nuts... very rich, spoiled, or crazy. ;D

A GLX must be an "ok" rod, if a $250 IMX rod is "good value". LMAO

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

I've never used the Shimano so I can't comment on that, I do have a couple of IMX rods and absolutely love them. They have been worth the $$ in my opinion though as Roadwarrior mentioned that's to be determined by the purchaser.

My comment was not based about the quality/value of the rod.  It was based upon personality.  In some areas I am a chronic upgrader.  If OP tends to upgrade frequently, it is possible that he may have buyers remorse by going with the Crucial.  Considering the losses associated with trading up, the Crucial then becomes an expense and not a value. :)  Sometimes intangibles play an important part of the decision making process :)

In my limited experience, my favorite value is a different brand, but it was not one of the options :o

If there was a $60,000 car on the market that performed like a $120,000 car it would still be expensive but if it performs at the same level of twice as expensive than it would be a value. Value and expensive aren't mutually exclusive.
