Dobyns Sierra spinning rod 2025

fishing user avatargall reply :

Im still trying to find a decent sub 7ft spinning rod for light tubes t rigs light tw and other techniques for river creek smallmouth and I was looking at the dobyns Sierra 6'9 m/f or ml/f and was wondering if anyone has used them and how they liked them or I guess maybe the champion xp pretty much willing to spend around 250 for a good quality rod just having a tough time trying to. Narrow it down

fishing user avatarPatrickKnight reply :

I ordered a 703 Sierra last night and it will be here in two days (gotta love TW 5 dollar two day air shipping) I will let you know what I think of it when it arrives.

fishing user avatargall reply :

Haha can't argue there but thank you I mean a lot of people rave about the fury but I want something a tad shorter then 7ft too many rods in the 150-250 price range to narrow down

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

That Sierra SA693F is going to be one of the next rods I get my wife. She is going to use it for Sencos, small tx rigs, tubes grubs etc. I then plan on getting a Champ 705 spinning rod for her to throw frogs and big jigs.  You will find the Sierra a bit slower graphite than the Champ.  If you are throwing mostly bottom feely type baits jump to the Champion.

The difference is not very big, but the Champs are a little more sensitive and react quicker on the hook set.

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

I've got the Savy 692 (predecessor to the Sierra) and it is a bit whippy. I use mine for light shakey heads, drop shots, and ned rigs. When I throw light texas rigs and tubes, I step up to a medium (or 3) powered rod. I like having that little extra backbone for driving those slightly heavier gauge hooks home.

If you do not mind a trip, come down Route 83 to Hunt Valley. There is a local shop, sorta like Susquehanna Fishing Tackle. This shop carries Dobyns in stock. Look up Anglers Express. They are located about 2 exits before you would run into the 695 Baltimore Beltway.  He stocks Powell, Dobyns Duckett and plenty more. You will be amazed at how well stocked his shop is and it has only been in business for just over a year.  Give him a call at  Call us now: (844) 204-FISH (3474).

fishing user avatargall reply :

Thank you guys for all. Your advice I'll deff have to make a trip down sft is a pretty nice tackle. Shop and trying to find a tackle. Shop that carries dobyns and powell is a rare occurrence around here for me

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

Anglers Express is the only Dobyns dealer for about 4 or 5 states.  Eric is building a good store. He is located on Old Padonia Rd, which is one block north of Padonia Rd off 83 South.  That is about a 1 hour run for you. I used to live just north of Duncannon so I sorta know your area.   He usually has at least a half dozen Sierras, lots of Fury, some Champions as well. Call and be sure what he has in the spinning in stock. He just received a huge order of Dobyns about 3 weeks ago and many of them have been sold already. Heck between my friend and I we lowered his inventory by a total 5 rods just ourselves.  If I sell enough at the local fishing flea market I intend to reduce his inventory by a few more. What is great is if he does not have it in stock at that moment you can ask him to bring in say 1or 2 Sierras and a Champ to decide between and he will get them in.  If you call tell him Bob Rampolla sent you. I have sent him a bunch of business. That's okay since he takes good care of me. So far I have purchased one Ike rod, some Dobyns rods and a couple of Irods from him. It is a dark and dangerous place to go in, but I have a calling for those dark places!  :lol-047:

fishing user avatargall reply :

Thank you so much for all your help and you know the type of waters to the tee I'm fishing ie condaguient and parts all over the river I was thinking about it probably gonna break down get a champion xp I think that's the split grip one form. The length action everything sounds perfect to. Pair with a stradic fk

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

I am jealous!:happy-111:

Seriously call first because I know he has been pumping a lot of Dobyns through there/  If he does not have it in stock he will get it.Also I am serious let him know i sent you. He has been taking good care of my friends.  I have sent him a BUNCH of business.  I love the fact I can go put my hands on a rod, compare it to another brand or two as well. At this point I used to love G Loomis bt do not like the changes made to the IMXs or GL series. I have become a huge fan of the Dobyns, Powells and Irods.

fishing user avatargall reply :

That's funny you mention g loomis that was one of the original I was looking at the 6'3 bronzeback still might get myself a powell inferno for a solid back up because I have yet to hear bad things about either brand

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

I did the tough job of stopping at Anglers for you. They have a Sierra SF 693SF in stock. Man they are wiping out the big order of DObyns fast. They just got them about 2 weeks ago.  They have to have sold 1/2 of the order in that time.

One other thing is they are going to be selling a custom series "store brand".   Tom of Tom's custom rods is building some, they just got 3 in to begin with.  Tom does beautiful work.

fishing user avatargall reply :

I was actually gonna head down that way tomorrow by any off chance do you know if the store special rods could be custom made to a certain length action etc or should I contact the actual road builder and still. Might have to. Jump on the sierra

Hey....a tough job but somebody has to do it.  :(  Nice guy that I am I would have done it if I lived closer.

fishing user avatarPatrickKnight reply :

Do yourself a favor and give a Sierra a shot. My 703 came in today and wow its impressive. One of the best balanced rods I have ever fished and the most sensitive in the $200 range.

Check out the custom 6'9 spinning rod in stock. Compare it to the Dobyns, The Irod, the Powells etc.  Tom can build you anything you want.  His work is amazing.  He is located in Bel Air MD. Take a look at his website http://www.tomscustomrods.com/custom-rods-galley/

If you have an idea of what your ideal rod is, he will sit down with you. He has so many parts in stock he will lay out options for reel seats, guides, blanks, and everything else. If you look on his website you can get an idea of just a small part of his wizardry. He will go over different options and many times mock it up right there.  The rods he is building for the store use the old style G Loomis blanks. They are  MHX brand. They are nice blanks.  He also uses a bunch of different blanks as well. You can get original St Croix blanks, Point Blank and many more.  Give him a call. If you go custom take a good look at the Winn Grips and MicroWave guides. On a spinning rod they are awesome.

MHX blanks are really nice for the price you pay for them.

fishing user avatargall reply :

Thanks everyone for the input and I looked at the mhx blanks cause I would love to build custom rods for personal use and everyone really raves about them I did not know they were old g loomis design blanks

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

MHX blanks are NOT old Loomis design blanks. The original series of MHX blanks were made to mimic the old Loomis line and lure ratings. Loomis had nothing to do with it.

fishing user avatargall reply :

Yeah that's what I meant sorry but hows the sensitivity of the rods overall cause most of fishing is bottom contact so the need for a sensitive rod is a must

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

Go catch up with Tom and put one in your hands. Or go over to baybass.com and ask some of the users of those rods from Tom. Bryan probably owns more Tom's rods than even Tom himself.  Bryan can give you a run down on each blank he has used in his custom builds.  While you are there read through some of his fishing reports, specifically for his rod/reel/ lure reports from his catches.  Bryan, Dennis, Dmass and others regularly fish those rods.

fishing user avatargall reply :

Well I'm down to either avid C Sierra or champ xp I got to strap my reel on an avid I think 6'8 m/cf it felt prety good byt something about those dobyns I can't put my finger on might just buy both when u come back up from Florida ha my cabelas has the sierra might try to sneak out there thus week before I leave and scoop one of those up then order the champ xp

Is that as tight as you could get the reel seat hood? Is that a 2500-3000 size stradic?  I'm not a fan of the way that nut on the hood sticks out over the blank like that.

Tightened down all the way on a 3000 FK. It looks strange in this pic but there is no noticeable gap between the reel seat hood and the blank of the rod. Its actually pretty comfy to fish with (I still prefer a for grip but I know most people don't). Plus I would MUCH rather have it like this than have extra threads left over like my buddies Falcon Bucco that's just annoying!

I use mainly 35 size Pfluegers and 3000 size daiwa spinning reels. They both have a longer reel foot than the 2500-3000 size shimano's. Doesn't look like they would even work with that rod to me. I like a foregrip on spinning rods also, the Avid's are my favorite.
