I like my Dobyns Champion 705cb, but like iabass said, you would have to wait until a sale. I also really liked my Powell Endurance 695cb. I don't think they make it anymore, but I wouldn't hesitate to try another one of their rods. You may also want to check out the St. Croix Avid crankbait rods. There are a lot of people that really like them.

Powell Max 703 Glass is a great rod, dont have it anymore but i loved using it.

I don't mind exceeding my budget if the quality is there. It will be paired up with a Curado I and will be my first quality baitcasting setup.

I was also thinking about building a custom on a Phenix X10B blank. I have the supplies. I just didn't know if it was worth it.

I've heard good things about the St. Croix Mojo Bass Crankbait rods if you're looking to go glass.

I just love my new Phenix X11.

It's a 7' 0'' composite rod which loads like crazy, and balance's great with a Curado I, or even the heavier PQ.

It has the backbone for anything you'll run into.

It's rated at 3 oz on the high side and they advertise it as a deep crank rod but I use it for sq bill's, and other shallow to mid depth water.

The X13 has the same ratings but it's a 7' 6" if you want that.

The X9 and X10 also feel great but haven't used them.

I use a St Croix rage:

RC78MHM

I really like the extra length, 7'8". Something to think about, if I was looking for a 7' rod the AVC70MHM Avid would be my choice at $200.

I have both the AVC70MM and AVC70MHM, and they are great cranking rods. They cover 95% of my cranking needs, and I have five sticks dedicated to cranking.

Yes.

I have the AVC70MM, too. It's a GREAT rod for medium weight crankbaits.

Mine is saddled with a Shimano CH50Mg/ Izorline #10

Yes, they are Avids. Both are matched with Daiwa Sol reels. The MM handles everything from peanut sized cranks up to about 1/2 oz. the MHM is for cranks 3/8 and up. About the biggest bait I throw on it is a G2 or 125mm Sebile Magic Swimmer. Right now, they are spooled with 12 and 15 lb. Tatsu.

You can have high quality equipment without busting your bank by learning to build your own rods. After some practice, you can build one with less then 3 hours invested.

For the range you suggest I use the MHX CB845 by Mudhole. Between the blank, guides, reel seat and grips you can have top quality for $100-$125 or so... If you want a 7'6" go with the CB905...

catching a fish on a rod you built is one of the greatest pleasures in fishing.....

You pretty much answered my question. I've got a St Croix Premier MH cranker and I'm looking for a compliment. The M Avid would be the one?

Yep. The Avid is more sensitive and a bit lighter.

I'm curious Kent. Why Izorline? I fished it alot until you mentioned YZ Hybrid and tried it. I like the YZ.

I was at a Bass University event several years ago.

I bought some and it got "lost". I just spooled this one reel with it and

surprisingly find the line to be great for treble hook applications.

I have been experimenting this year with another monofilament, Sunline

Super Natural, which I also like for jerkbaits. It's just for fun, I am still a

BIG fan of Yo-Zuri Hybrid.

So it sounds like I'm going to try Tatsu, Invizx, YZ Hybrid, and some Suffix braid and see what I like best.

While I use fluoro, and in the past CXX on that AVC70MM, that rod would be a good match for braid, if you want to go that route. It has a lot of flex, to keep the trebles pinned, but there is a surprising amount of backbone in the bottom third of the blank. I've caught quite a few accidental northerns, a few over 12 lbs. and never felt out matched.
