Revo ALX or Curado 70 2024

fishing user avatarRedHeadAngler reply :

I'm trying to decide between the Curado 70 and the Revo ALX. I plan on putting them on a 6'8" MXF casting rod. I've held both in store and there are a few things I noticed. The Revo has a smaller overall profile than the Curado which makes me think it would cast light baits better. I also like the clicking tension knob on the Revo. So far i'm kind of set on the Revo but i'm looking for some reasons why the Curado might be a better choice.

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

I haven't personally held the ALX, but it has piqued my interest. I will say I've been very impressed with my 71XG. I've had no problems pitching 3/16oz texas rigs, or bombing 1/2oz frogs either.

I will say that Shimano has a much better reputation as being a reel that will last for years and hold it's value over that time. The same cannot be said about the Revo's.

Reel size/profile doesn't in any way correlate at all to the distance and castability of the reel. The weight/size of the spool and the quality of the bearings are two factors that determine the casting distance of baits. That being said, I'd go with the Curado. Shimano has had a much better reputation than Abu over the years.

fishing user avatarLEWITH reply :

Shimano all the way imo. Loving my new Curado 200i.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I was fishing an 1/8oz hair jig on my 70xg last week and having no problems casting. I'm not an Abu fan so I have noteven heard of the other reel.

fishing user avatarBaitFinesse reply :

Curado 70.  The ALX is a linear mag brake reel.  Not a fan of linear mag braking reels unless I'm throwing UL baits.

I just looked at an ALX in the store.  It's sooo darn tiny it's ridiculous. I used to think Lews LFS were small.  Either would be a good choice.

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

Hmmmm... one is a Shimano low profile reel and one is an Abu. Get the Shimano. Abu hasn't made a great LP reel since the Gen 2 Premier IMO though some like the MGX.

I like Revo Baitcasting reels (hate the spinning) and I only have one Curado (200I) which might not be much to compare to. I'm very impressed with the Curado but it depends what you are looking for. The Revo STX would be more inline with the Curado 70 than the ALX and all have different spool capacitys if that matters to you. The REVO stx and the Curado 70 have centrifugal brakes and magnetic brakes, while the ALX has magtrax which is basically just a magnetic brake like on the REVO SX but the ALX's spool is obviously lighter so I would assume can cast lighter baits much better than the SX which struggles under 3/8 oz.

If I had to pick one I would probably pick the Curado 70, but if you do go the ALX route, let me know how it is because I'd be very interested in the reel's performance. Do what you want to do, I've had issues with Abu and it's too early to tell with Shimano, but most from the site are going to tell you to go with Shimano. Only you know what you want. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try my best to help you out.

* also, define what "light" is in ounces and you might get a totally difference answer.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Fwiw the dial on the curado is not a mag brake, rather an extra adjustment for the centrifugal brake.

Did not know that! I guess that's what I get for assuming...I literally just tried my first Curado 200 last weekend. What would the Pro's/Con's be for an extra adjustment on the centrifugal brake VS. mag + centrifugal?

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

I liked the set it and forget it regular centrifugal brakes myself.

On the curado 200 I just set it on 1 brake and didn't touch the external centrifugal adjustment. It worked just fine for 1/2 oz lipless cranks. I will probably mess around with the adjustments more when I'm throwing sub 3/8 oz baits.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

People that use it seem to like it once they get it dialed in. I'm just not into change for change sake. I realize the competitive nature of the industry requires this sort of thing and just deal with it. Lol

fishing user avatarJDNKC reply :

Curado 70 is really nice.  I like it better than the curado 200 and chronarch 150 although they are all nice.  No experience with abu, but can't go wrong with shimano.

fishing user avatarthebillsman reply :

Love my 70HG, I'd recommend it to anybody.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

I'm sorry I have never heard of the ALX.  Is this a new line?  Also I agree just because it is a smaller profile it doesn't mean it can cast light weights better.  Another misconception, when people see me use my 50E and pitch it into heavy cover they cringe and ask me why I'd want to risk breaking my small reel.  Then when I pull out a fish they are in awe.

As for the choice above, in my opinion not because I'm a Shimano homie.  Trying to be as objective as I can be, since I do not hear much about the ALX and Shimano has a superior rep on the 50 plat form and in general small platform reels.  I'd go with Shimano in this fight.

It has a smaller frame like the MGX but it is aluminum, while having a shallower spool than the STX. Looks like an interesting reel but I'm going the Curado 70HG route for my next flip/pitch reel.

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

the new MGX now has the same frame as the ALX . i was in the tackle shop to pick up a BB1 Pro ( they ordered it for me but got in a regular BB1 :() so i was checking out the ALX and was really tempted to get it , the only thing i didn't like was the short handle ( but that can be fixed with a Lew's 95mm carbon handle ) and yes , the reel is very small but feels strong with the alloy frame , overall a very nice reel !!! was so close to buying it but chose to hold out for the BB1 Pro as i love the ACB braking setup and the stealthy look of the reel , plus it pretty much matches my Tournament Lite .

EDIT : the tackle shop informed me this morning that their distributer could not get the BB1 Pro , so it looks like i WILL be getting the Revo ALX , gonna get a Lew's 95mm carbon fiber handle for it , will see how well it casts then if i think it needs improvement , i will drop in a set of Hedgehog AIR CERAMIC bearings ..

the ALX has the smallest frame on the market , the frame size will be shared with the MGX2 . it has the same width as the Alderbaran but is shorter by about 3/4''

Cool. I haven't seen either reel in person. SO the ALX is the same frame size as the MGX2? Are those both smaller frames than the MGX1?

yes they both share the same frame , wasn't working today so i went to the tackle shop and picked up the ALX ( 8.0:1 left handed ) and while i was there i took some comparison photos of it next to a few reels .

the first one is next to a Pixy Type R , the next one is an Alderbaran 50 , and the last is a Tatula CT.

yes the frame on the ALX and MGX2 is smaller than the original MGX .

Wow. That tatula looks huge next to the ALX. I don't understand the braking system they put in it though. It is identical to the SX correct? I'm not a huge fan of that braking system.

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

not that familar with the Magtrax braking system but i just went out side in the rain after i spooled up the reel with 30lb. 832 i had lying around and set the brakes low and casted a few times and pitched a 3/8 weight , i must say this reel is pretty good casting !! you get effortless casts and the braking system is pretty pitching friendly , and long casts are easy with it . hope to get on the water soon to really get a better feel of it but for now i'm thinking it was a good investment

i put it on my 7'10 Rainshadow H/F , it matches the titanium chrome blank finish pretty good .

Nice! Keep me posted on it. I might have to pick one up this year.
