BPS extreme reel took a dump. 2025

fishing user avatarCanalStalkin reply :

hey guys, I had recently purchased a BPS extreme combo that I loved, Until I started noticing it not engaging after a cast once in a while. Now after every cast I have to move the thumb button up manually or it just grinds the gears (I don't think this is normal lol). I have only had the combo like 3 months and didn't beat on it. Now I want your opinion on stuff. I got the combo on sale for like 89 bucks, its now 159 or so. Should I get a refund or replacement? I cant get much for 90 bucks, maybe a slightly used combo in the flea? If I got a refund I could put it towards something better for christmas, but that means id be stuck with one decent rod for multiple uses. Or should I just get a replacement and get another budget rod for crankbaits and such? ( I love this rod for heavy plastics and jigs, but too stiff for throwing light cranks and such). Any input?

fishing user avatarwhoopbazz reply :

From my experience...the rods are tough to beat for the money (or any price). I had very bad luck with one reel. Won't buy another.

fishing user avatardodgeguy reply :

hy not just get the reel replaced?

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

What Dodgeguy said.  Seems like a no-brainer to me.

BPS will replace the reel.  They are good at that.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

I agree with Whoopbazz, rods a good reels are bad.

Micro is also correct, so take it back and get a name brand reel you can afford.

I will no longer purchase any BPS or Johnny Morris reels.  ;)

fishing user avatartholmes reply :

Please forgive me if I'm stating the obvious here, but I had the same problem with my Ambassadeur 4500 C. I was ready to send it back to the factory before I noticed that the sideplate screws had worked loose, causing the same symptoms that you described.

It's worth checking.

Tom

fishing user avatarSWMIBASSER reply :

There is no voodoo or anything else with a fishing reel. It's probably just a matter of something came loose or to much grease or  or some other simple solution.

I've used an Extreme reel all year now with several big fish caught with zero problems. If you decide not to send it back and want to figure out the problem I could take mine apart to help you figure out your problem.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I have several BPS rods. They are hard to beat for the price. I have also had two extreme reels. The first lasted about two months and the second lasted about 45 minutes before it quit. I will never buy another.

Check with the Fishing Dept. manager and see if you can get your money back for the reel and keep the rod.

fishing user avatarCanalStalkin reply :

I spoke with a "live help" associate and since I ordered it as a combo and online I have to send it back and they will replace both the rod and reel at no charge. I guess ill send it back, sucks having to send stuff back. And it looks like other people have had the same issue so that is why I asked about the refund.

fishing user avatarBass4Me007 reply :

I'm guessing it is probably the spring that returns the thumb bar ... that it is either bent or broken. On the outside chance that somehow enough dirt got into the channel where the bar returns, you might check that. But, my adult son and I each bought a similar reel a few years ago at the same time, and we each had the spring go out ... about a month apart. I've been a bit shy about buying any extremes, Clunns, etc. since then. We each have our own experiences.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

The problem I see with BPS reels is consistency or better said, the lack of consistency when purchasing one or several, a friend of mine purchased a Johnny Morris reel ( previous model ) and the reel has worked flawlessly for several years, at the start and quite soon after purchasing the first one he liked it so much he purchased another two, in theory the three reels should be the same, however the story is not always theory but facts, the other two he purchased have caused nothing but trouble. 1 good reel out of 3, not saying that 66% of BPS reels are lemons, however the chances of getting a lemon are there and I 'd rather play safe with my hard earned money.

fishing user avatarCFFF 1.5 reply :

I almost exclusively fish BPS Extreme Baitcast reels. I have I believe 5 or 6 of their extreme reels. I have never had a problem with any of them. Two of the Extremes I have are at least 5 or 6 years old possibly older, I honestly can't remember anymore. Sorry you had bad luck but from my P.O.V. you can't beat their reels for the price.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

BPS reels are made in korea, thats reason enough for me to not buy them. I only buy reels made in japan. You get what you pay for. Rods are a different story, alot of high end rods are actually made in china and are decent but any reel that isnt made in the USA or Japan is junk, end of story. Next time buy a nice used high end reel from ebay or from the used forum on here, that forum has tons of deals to be had.

In your opinion of course, right?

BTW, there are many BPS brand, Revo and Pflueger users that know better. ;)

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

I have had no problems with Extreme reels (I have 3) or Pro Qualifier reels (2). I have 2 years on the Extremes and one on the PQs. I like the Extremes and I love the PQs.

I will not buy a used reel on Ebay. I'll take my chances with a new reel that can be returned over one that cannot. Just my.02

you're kidding?revo reels and pflueger patriarchs are both korean.they are both awesome.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

I had a problem with my BPS Extrem reel Sunday, so last night I took it apart, cleaned it, and tightened the screws on the black plastic plates on the inside, made sure there was no oil on the brakes ect. Buttoned it up, and today it worked just fine.

Re: the thumb catch..I had that problem with my Cardiff reel, seems the little plastic catch thingy that engages the thumb release wasn't catching very well. Although it was fixable, I choose to get another reel.

BTW, my BPS was bought used, I've had it for almost a year, use it at least 3 times a week, and this was my only problem, best 30.00 I've spent.. ;D

fishing user avatarFishingBuds reply :

I have the BP extreme Woo Daves Flippen combo, 7'6" Hvy Act. with 6.4:1 gear ratio with flippen switch. Been two years and its operated flawlessly, except when I screwed up ;D took getting use to the flippen switch.

I have 2 Revo S and they were made in China. 50/50 on them BTW, first one was flawless out-of-the-box. Just got the other this week and have had to open it up and clean and re-lube everything. Seems to work fine now. I think that the reels sometimes sit too long, mine are '09 models, and the grease gets old. Seemed that way on my second one anyway, no telling how long since it had been manufactured, also could have been exposed to extreme heat or cold versus the other one.......who knows.....ya really never know what you're getting until it's in your hands nowadays.

I have a used Extreme reel that Muddy gave me and it has been a great reel for me. Don't even know the model or age but it works fine and with no problems.

fishing user avatarGRiver reply :

I have an BPS extreme, only had it since July, Bought last years closeout for $39.77. I fish about two or more days out of the week. I haven't had any problems. Wonder if you took it to a BPS shop and talked to them direct, you'll probably get better results. They have pretty good customer service, might be able to fix it on the spot too.

Geez....I guess I'll be tossin' my Ambassadeurs since they were made in Sweden.

fishing user avatarbwell reply :

I don't think so. Abu Garcia promotes Swedish

design, but they no longer manufacture components

nor assemble the reels there.

That's true, but all 3 of mine are old enough that they are marked "Made in Sweden".

fishing user avatarNBR reply :

I've had 4 or 5 of their reels with only one problem and they replaced it quickly and without any hassle!

fishing user avatarCanalStalkin reply :

I dont have the return label, so I have to ship it out of my own pocket and request a refund in a letter I send with it. I was wondering how much it costs you guys to send rod tubes? Roughly.
