Dobyns Champion 733 Arrived Today 2024

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

When Gary Dobyns talked me out of a Champion Extreme for my Tube/Rage Rigs and recommended the Champion 733, I was left with ok? Your the boss and I know nothing about your rods, so ok!

He was right, the 733 is the perfect blend between a MF and a MHF rod. This rod feels amazing. This is my first Dobyns and first rod this high end. Cork is amazing. I've got a 745 DX on the way too, so I'm even more excited!

I took my 50E off my top water rod to see how it felt. I need a new 50E for my top water rod now lol.

Yep! It feels good knowing that he saved me 80 bucks and recommended something that was perfect

wait till you get the DX745, i have it and man what a rod it is, cork is even nice than my champion series, and the looks the rods has is amazing, from the paint to the kevlar wrap, its a beauty, and man the way it fishes is amazing. i was using it yesterday for a carolina rig in about 32ft of water, i could feel the bite from a 1.5lb smallmouth like it was a 5lb on a ultralite rod, so crisp.

let me know how you like that 733 after you fish it several times, that was the next rod i am looking to purchase..

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

I have always bought off recommendations of Richard and Gary....BUT I still say the DX is the better line for "contact" baits. Now I say that, but have not fished a bottom bait on a champion line in a long time.

that 733 IS THE PERFECT, and I mean PERFECT 3/8oz spinnerbait rod and even 1/2oz really but I think the 734 is better on 1/2oz spinners.

even with all that said, Dobyns make such great crossover rods, you can use them for just about anything in the weight range.

now go check your "play money" account cause all you gonna want is more now, LOL

Man, 32 is deep. I can't remember the last time I fished that deep or even seen a SM.

I'm stoked for the 745 to arrive. Jigs are my baby so it's defiantly going to see use.

It's supposed to be 88 tomorrow and I'm on days off. Boat is loaded up for tomorrow am!

No problem. I really can't believe how balanced and great it feels with my 50E paired. My 745 will be here Saturday, so both should get a decent work out

I've always said the champ 703/733 were better light tube rods than the DX 3 power. Regardless of a minor difference in sensitivity between the 2 lines. (If you can even tell) Gary knows what he is talking about! Enjoy your new rods.

I love it actually. I know this sounds weird, but I enjoy fishing it more than I do my 745 now. Maybe its because its lighter and a lighter action, but it feels better in my hand. I've been fishing tubes and 1/4oz rigs with ease.

As for a 3.8oz jig, I'm not 100% sure. Its rated up to 3/4oz. I'll have to tie one on this weekend and see. I've never gone higher than a 1/4oz weighted hook at a medium size plastic.

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

I have to agree, the 733 is a superbly built rod, one of the only that I really, really like in the Dobyns line. The DX795 is my "must have" from their line. The other rod that I've been fishing a ton, of late, is the Mike Long Jig rod. I didn't like it at first because I was soooooo used to the NRX and GLX, but now that I've become accustomed to the way the stick performs, I'm going to have to get a couple more.

depends on the trailer, but it should because I have always said the 733 is THE 3/8 spinnerbait rod.

I will say on a 734 is what I do my swim jiggin with, 1/2oz with rage grub trailer.

You absolutely want the 735C. The 735C and 733C are actually in different series within the Champion line. Take a look at the Dobyns website. The 735C is designed specifically for frogging/pitching and is rated higher than the 733C.

the differences are the powers or the last number in the model i.e 733 is a 3 power or MH. 4 powers are Heavy. some of the 5 powers are listed as MH but are MH in their given application series if that makes sense. the 735c is listed as a frog/flipping rod but it's a MH but it's more powerful than the 4 powers which are Heavy. for frogs, the 735c is THE frog rod that dobyns makes. super powerful but has an amazing tip that allows for long casts. the 735's are made /w extra fast tips specifically for this while the majority of the dobyns line ups are fast or crankbait rods. the

The above guys are correct. The 5 is a Mag heavy in the Extreme model. This is a really good write up on the 735C from Tackle Tour. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewdobyns735c.html One of their only complaints was the rod registered as a heavy action and not a MH as advertised.

My 733 is a MH power but not all rods are created equal in that respect. Mine feels more like halfway between a MH and M. Perfect for what I need

It would certainly work, but it depends on your preference in action and the cover you will be fishing. For heavy cover it would be an excellent choice. I personally would opt for the 734C for an all around swim jig stick for the slower action. Another thing to consider is if you are fishing braid, you may want a slightly slower action.

Thanks. That was a thought I had too. My 745 is the first fast tip I've ever used for jigs. I was concerned about the tip being slower, but after the first two really short tap tap taps, I hooked up with both fish. Normally with my XF tips I get too excited and miss the fish on the light taps.

Now the long process of deciding on the 734 or 744 for my swim jigs begins.

if you're using straight braid the xf tip can really make it be too much rod for heavy swim jigs unless you're throwing it really heavy, dense cover. the the 745 is a fantastic jig rod but i do not like throwing swim jigs on it.on the rare occasions i use braid, it's on a swim jig rod but it's the 733 to compensate for the braid. i fish the  1/4 swim jigs in lily pads, weed lines and don't have issues pulling bass out. the 734 would be perfect for 1/2oz swim jigs. the tip on the champion is a tad slower than the DX line which i prefer for swim jigs but not skirted traditional jigs.

Thanks. I'm current using a Crucial in MHXF and with braid I really have to slow my hook set and make it a spit second delayed. This may be it.

Don't limit yourself to just frogs. The 735C is an excellent pitching stick as well. Very versatile rod as long as a slower action isn't required.

Try not to work the rod with your wrist. When pitching with long rods I find all I really have to do it lift with a slight turn of the wrist. When I'm using the 795 90% of the time I'm using heavy weights 3/4-1oz+, Just let the weight of the bait and the length of the rod do all the work, similar to a pengilum.

How bad does the sellers backside hurt lol I thought 280 was a steal on mine but wow. Nice grab.

To be honest, I have more fun fishing my 733 than my 745. Its light and with my 50E it balances out perfectly. I got some 1/4 and 3/8 oz jigs I've been throwing just fine. I've also been pitching 1/4oz and 3/8oz shakey head rigs with ease. Anymore than 1/2 oz and it feels a tad over loaded for me. I've ran some weightless flukes and had no trouble loading them as well.

I am going to get a DX744 at the Black Friday sale as my dedicated bottom contact rod. I am just not sure what reel I want. I think I am going to go with a Shimano since I have never fished one. Do you think the difference between the Chronarch and Core 50 series is worth the extra cash?

If the total weight is 3/4, I think so. You should get plenty of flex to load the bait on the 734

I have a Core 100MG on my 745 now. I also have one for my swim jig rod which will be a 734 soon. The Core is a whole different animal that my Chronarch's. The reduced weight is a lot more noticeable than I could imagine. I use a 50 for my hair jigs and one for my jerkbaits. I've never made a cast far enough to get down to my backing with 65-70 yards of line.

To answer your question is it worth it, to me it was worth it as I love the Core. Remember a couple of things though, the Core's IPT is only 26 on the 100MG. The 50E is 25. If you want faster, you have to get the Core 50 which is 28. It's 20 dollars more than the 100 and 180 more than the Chronarch. That's almost another reel or rod.

Also if you don't want to wait till the sales the forum has a new sponsor named Beat the big box guys.com. Owners name is Ron. Call him, tell him where your from and he will cut you a deal probably better than you can find at any sale. I got my 745 from him cheaper than I could at the last TW sale. Saved about 10 bucks off the sale price.

The dx744 should be a versatile enough bottom contact rod for most anything you could ask it to do. Buying one during the sale would be a good move. Should be able to find plenty of 20-25% sales around the holidays.

I have a curado 50e, chronarch 50e, scorpion 1000xt (Japanese 50 sized reel), and core 50. All are great reels and difference moving up the list in price is rather small IMO. The differences are in weight, ball bearing quality and number, casting distance, and to a small extent refinement. Is the core worth nearly doube the price as a chronarch? Maybe for someone obsessed with weight, color scheme, and slightly better performance then possibly.

What I would do is pair the rod up with a curado 50e. The reel and the rod will match almost perfectly stock. Should be rather easy to find the curado 50e for under $160 in great shape. To solve the 6:4.1 ratio issue purchase a core 50mg7 gear set for about $28.00 and put it in the reel. Mike at DVT can do this if you don't feel comfortable. You could even put in upgraded spool bearings in there and still be well under the price of a core.

I have settled on a curado 50e for one of my champ extremes and can't ever see that changing.

You can swap the gears out? Dang I didn't know that. I will have to try that on my 50E's. Thanks

Sweet! Thanks for that Rock. I will be getting in touch with Ron soon. Kickerfish, do you think I am better off getting the Chronarch 50E and just getting some Boca bearings and upgraded drag washers instead of the Core? The Core 50MG7 seems to be substantially lighter than the Chronarch 50e. 5.5 vs 7.1 oz. The core in a 7 ratio is 28 IPT vs Chronarch in 6.4 at 25 IPT. I dont know if its worth changing out the gears for only 3 IPT.

Chronarch 150Ci4 may be an option as well.. Is this smaller than the 200 but larger than the 50 I take it?

Yes. It's kinda in the middle, but talking with a couple of guys and holding one, it palms like a 100. Pm member Hooligan, he's got a few of them and has some good info on them. I trust his word.

I just bought a dx743 and fished it last week for the first time. The first day I had a core 50 on the rod and switched to a chronarch ci4 on day two. Both reels balance and palm nice on the rod. I'm planning to keep the core on that rod, but that's mainly because I'm planning to get a 735 for the ci4.

I think you'll be happy with either reel on the 744.

Personally I would leave the reel stock. The drag is going to be more than adequate and the bearings should be fine as is. Just maybe flush them before purchasing new ones if you are unhappy with their performance. You can leave the gears stock. It may make the reel more versatile in the long run should you decide to use it for another technique or move it to another rod at a later date.

If matching the reel and rod together from a cosmetic standpoint doesn't appeal to you then I would get the chronarch 50e over the curado. Plus the knobs of the chronarch are more beefy, which most guys prefer.

Honestly even though dobyns rods balance great, the smaller core may not balance as well as the chronarch. I really feel from a cost to performance standpoint stick with chronarch and make changes to the reel if you feel they are necessary at a later date after fishing it first.

Can't comment on the CI4 so I don't have much to offer should that be an option. As rockchalk noted "Hooligan" and "the hooligan" both have one as do a host of others. They would be of more help than myself on this...
