Daiwa Tatula Casting Rod 2024

Hello Everyone, I'm interested in purchasing a Daiwa Tatula Casting Rod and I have a few questions.

First, does anyone have this rod? If so what are your thoughts, what power/action is it, what do you use it for etc.

I'm leaning towards purchasing the 7' 1" MH/XF model. I will be using this rod for texas rigged worms. Most of my setups consist of a 3/16 oz strike king pro tungsten weight, with either a 2 or 3 alt Gamakatsu G-Lock worm hook. I tend to use 6-10 inch worms.

My current worm setup is a Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier CarbonLite Rod. It is 6' 9" MH/XF. I really like the rod and I've had it for years, but I recently had the top guide break and I figured I'm in the market for a new rod.

I really like the extra 4" of the tatula but I'm curious as to how the power and action compares to other rod brands. I really like the extra fast action on my BPS CarbonLite so I figured the tatula would be as well.

Thoughts?

I have that exact rod and to me it's more of a traditional H/F rod. It's very stout with a lot of backbone. I use it for buzz toads, pitching light to moderate cover and even open water froggin. I have it paired with a model a reel and it balances perfectly. Look on Walmart website for deals on them. They randomly put one Tatula model on sale every few weeks. That's where i got mine shipped for $98.

I had the 6'10" MH. I really like the way the rod performed, but it felt a bit too stiff to me for bladed jigs and spinnerbaits. Its got good sensitivity, pretty light, and I wouldv kept it for jigs and plastics if I didnt have a better rod already. I havnt fished with the 7'4", but it should be good for what you intend to do.

I'm going to get a new t-rig/jig rod before long and, right now, its a toss up between a Mojo bass, Tatula, or E6x.

I have the 7'4" frog rod. I wouldn't suggest that rod for the OP's need. Too stiff for the weights being used. Admittedly it is a new-2-me rod that I've only thrown one size frog on it so far. I could be wrong. OP: no idea what the 7'1" MH-XF is like.

I also got 6'10 MH/F, actually this is my replacement from the first one that got a broken tip. To me this 6'10 Tatula is all the soft size for 3/8oz jig with big trailer. I like the sensitive and very light weight of the rod even better than my favorite Shimano crucial 6'8 M/F. I use this rod for mostly bottom contact.

Rumor is that the signature elite is a steez blank. Handled several and they really are spectacular feeling. As for the Tatula 7'1 I have 2 and love them. I think they are a nice all purpose rod

I have that exact rod. I like it. It definitely lives up to its taper and power rating though, it's stout. Very light and sensitive though. Very well built as well .

Apply the Veritas rule? M=MH MH=H? Im looking at the 7'4" HXF for frogs/toads/light pitching myself.

My guess is that he is probably referring to the fact some manufacturer's rods fish heavier than rated. Abu is one.

The 7'4" Frog Rod is not a HXF it is a HF. It fishes like a Heavy Fast. Good backbone, and loads up real nice on a frog hookset.

Forgot about this thread and figured I would do a folllow up. I purchased The Tatula about a month or two ago and so far I've caught around 100 bass on it including my new personal best, 9lb. 2 oz bass.

I found the rod is incredibly lightweight and very aesthetically appealing. The rod blank is not smooth it has little grooves in it and isn't smooth to the touch. However, I really like the way it looks. I fished this rod with nothing but texas rigged plastics. Specifically 6" curly tail worms, with 3/16 to 1/8 oz. tungsten weights with 2/0 Gamakatsu G-Lock worm hooks.

Now to the performance. I found the tip to be just the perfect blend of x-fast to be the ultimate worming rod. I prefer the stiffer tip when worm fishing as I find I hang up less. When setting the hook you can immediately feel the power in the blank. Some MH rods have some give, and can feel a bit mushy on the hookset. this one does not which I love. When you set the hook you immediately take control of the fish which is another preference of mine when worming. I fish this rod with a *** *** reel paired with 14lb Seaguar red label flourocarbon.

I also purchased a *** Fate Black same action, power, length, and lure weight recommendation. (7' 1" MH/XF 1/4-1oz weight) and fished them side by side with the exact same setups. The tatula stood out above the 13 but it is $50 more. Again, though the overall weight difference between the Tatula and the Fate Black was very noticeable. Another plus is I got a Free HUK performance fishing shirt when I purchased the Tatula from Tackle Warehouse.

Sorry for the late response and long reply, just figured I would let everyone know how I feel about the Tatula. If anyone is considering getting one rest assured they're good rods.

I for one appreciate you getting back. I have 4 of the Tatula rods so you know I like them. Don't have that one or the 6'10" MHF both of which I would like to have. Unfortunately the last one is no longer available at Sportsman's Outfitters ($110). No matter. I shouldn't be buying another rod anyway.

Do you feel 6'10 MH/F is a good rod for skipping docks? Enough backbone? I was going to buy the Andy Montgomery Tatula Elite 6'9 Heavy, but they are out of stock at TW (have a Gift card) and apparently they have been discontinued.

I bought the 6'10" MHF after it was too cold to get out so I can't comment on its performance. Bought mine from Jet and I see they still have them for $93.28 with free shipping. I am a fan of the series and this is my 5th Tatula. AFAIC it is a no brainer. I'm sure you can find more than one thing to use the rod for and that you will enjoy it.

Does that rod also work pretty well for jigs in heavy cover? Ever try a 6" Huddleston by chance? (it claims it can cast up to 2oz). Might add one to the collection.

I would skip docks all day with my 6'10" MH/F. It has a lot of backbone and no trouble pulling big bass out of weeds as it is and it has very solid sensitivity. I got it for around $110 on Amazon and I don't think I would have gotten anything better for the price, even if I paid full retail. The other rod I would strongly consider for a similar application is the Shimano Zodias -- they run nearly heavy and I gather they have fantastic sensitivity but they're more expensive.

I also have the 7'2" MH/R (mod fast) Tatula glass cranking rod and that's a great rod for all moving baits.

It is pretty good for skipping anything 3/8 oz and heavier. It got enough back bone to horse the fish. It is pretty light weight and well balance compare to my crucial. I use this rod for all around when bank fishing. If I have to, I can cast 1/4 oz(pointer 68) up to 1oz (whopper plopper 110) no problem. It is really good rod for 100 bucks.

Now the bad part, this rod seems to have softer tip compare to other MH (Fenwick Ateos 7'2). I broke the rod tip by casting a lure that snag to brushes behind me.

Hmmm a softer tip might not be so bad for skipping.

I'm on the fence as whether to go for this rod with TW gift cards, or shell out another $180 somewhere else for the Andy Montgomery 6' 9" Tatula Elite.

I have 2 of the 7’1” Tatula rods and a Cronos with the same specs. I fish Texas rigs with them all the time. Tip is extremely sensitive but the rod has a lot of backbone. I like to think it fishes a lot lighter then it really is. I’ve owned most of the Tatula line up and the 7’1 is my second favorite behind the 7’4 frog rod. You’ll be very happy with it.

Jigs work great on that rod. I have also punched a time or two with it. 1oz and 1 1/2oz. It worked just fine for me.

I wouldn't throw a hud. I think those things weigh more than 2oz don't they?

The small ones weigh around 2oz, which is the rods rated max. It would be sweet if it could throw a small Huddleston because 7'4" is the largest rod I could possibly fit in my car.

Hey, you feel like the 6'10" MH/F isn't well matched up with a 3/8oz jig? That rod is weighted for 1/4-1oz. Would you say in general that is seems under powered for it's rating?

Under rating? Maybe not, this rod rate 1/4-1oz Lure, I can cast 1/4oz jerkbait all the way to WP 110 no problem. I also use it for 3/8oz jig with rage menace with no problem but like I said it is in the soft side compare to my other MH rod Fenwick Ateos 7’2 XF. I prefer a little bit stiffer tip for jig so Daiwa MH is perfect for 1/4oz Jig.

I think he meant the rating was understated (underpowered), meaning the rod suites better for 3/8oz-1oz lures. My experience with the Tatulas/Zillions are that the lower end ratings are understated on the MH and H power rods. I think they are more true to their power rating in their ML/M power rods though. I have the 6'10 MH/F Tatula, and it's a good all around rod, but doesn't excel at anything specific. I think the sensitivity is just OK. For bottom contact, I think there are better rods at that price point, and you can even pick up a way better used (but almost new condition) rod in that range, $100-$150.
