Best $40 spinning reel 2024

I'm planning to buy a new spinning reel around the $40 price range, but I'm not sure what to get. I'm considering buying the shimano sienna or the pflueger trion, and maybe even the daiwa crossfire but I'm having trouble deciding between them. Do you guys have any experience with these reels or do you recommend any other reels? thanks in advance

I have a 3 year old trion that I have put through hell and back and it works just like new. The drag is pretty smooth for a 35 dollar reel. Keep it clean and lubricated it will serve you well.

I got my Trion-30 last spring. Every trip I took I used it for a variety of techniques. Smooth and sturdy is how I'd describe it. This year, even with me adding setups to my arsenal, I'll still be using the Trion for smaller crankbaits, 2-treble jerkbaits and lighter spinner/chatterbaits (1/2oz and less).
Given my experience with it, I'd suggest the Trion.
Another possible is the Mitchell Avocet RZT. This is a significant upgrade from the RZ, which I have one of. Given how well my RZ worked last year, I'd consider an RZT if I needed a new reel in the budget range.

I have had a Shimano Sienna for about five years and it is still going strong. It performed better than a Sonora in my experience.

Tackle advisors was a big fan of the okuma EPXT-30 Epixor. The size 30 is 41.00 on amazon, 65-70 elsewhere. I bought one and it's been great so far. Seems well built, does what it is supposed to.

Pflueger Trion
Pflueger president if you find it on sale.
I use both and have a lot of each. You can't best a Trion for it's value.

I have the Sienna 1000 and 2500 not a bad reel for 30 bucks. I also have a KK Sharky lll not a bad reel either but somewhat higher in price range.

I think you'll be happy with whatever you choose for a spinning reel in the $40 range. IMO that's where diminishing returns really start ramping up, I don't plan on ever spending much more than that on a spinning reel for bass fishing.
The best ones I've used and felt are the newer daiwas in the $40+ range. The daiwa revros (less than 40 on auction sites) is every bit as smooth as much much more expensive daiwas and Shimanos. Seriously blew me away when I found out how inexpensive they are. If I were you, I might even shell out an extra $10 to get the new Revros LT which is essentially the same reel except with around 20% less weight.

I have the Trion, and I would absolutely recommend it. The reel is in your budget, but for another $20 you could get the reel/rod combo at Cabela's.
If it is at all possible to stretch that budget a little, the Summit XT in Cabela's online Bargain Cave...

When people talk about how well their Sienna has held up, it’s important to note the design of the reel has changed. There are now bushings where there used to be bearings (see red X in illustration). I don’t know what all else has changed. I had one of the old ones and it lasted 4-5 years, well worth the $29.
The part that wore out was the oscillating gear, or more precisely, the axle it rode, which is part of the reel body, which is some type of space-age plastic. As the axle wears out, the gears no longer mesh. The axle cannot be replaced.
When mine wore out, and I saw the new ones had been redesigned, I spent a little more for a Pflueger President, because it has a bearing that rides on that axle between it and the oscillating gear, in addition to like 8 other bearings in it. Plus the President has a stellar reputation.
After using the President 3 months, the bail spring broke.
The moral of this story is you can research all you want, but it’s pretty much impossible to find a definitive answer on which is the best reel for the money.

Torx screws. Personally I feel you are less likely to slip off them than with a slot or Phillips head screw. Just don't get carried away tightening them. Of course that is true for any screw. Never could understand the need to apply 50 ft.lbs. of torque to a screw that only needed one.

Sorry I don't know too much about reels but I'm assuming that this means that the newer version won't last as long as the older version?

That's everything we buy these days. They may things to fail so we can have a higher re-purchase rotation.
Back in the day, some companies made products so good, they went out of business because people bought one and was done. Now no matter the appliance, we are buying more due to failure... Or the new big thing, design or features.
In the example that was posted with the schematics. You can see that they change one and turn on part to one that was not replaceable yet fails. This is not a engineering flaw but a corporate and financial design.

Siennas have been $29 for a long time. They kept the price the same, because the market is so saturated at that price point, so their only option to maintain a profit was to reduce their manufacturing expense. I assume. It may be planned obsolescence to get you to buy more over time, I dunno.

My vote goes for the Sienna as well. I've had for about 10 years and it's definitely served its purpose. The reel requires lube quite a bit throughout the season, but it still works like a charm!

I haven't fished it yet, but the feel and balance on my Dobyns fury 702C seem very nice.

Dollar for dollar the Shimano Sienna is tough to beat, especially if you can find them on sale. I bought a couple of Siennas to use in the surf because I didn't want the salt/sand to ruin a nice reel and this way it would be cheap to replace the entire reel. I'm still using the first Sienna for several years now and it's holding up fine while the backup is still collecting dust.

That Sedona deal is pretty sweet too. That's more like the old Siennas.

Bass pro will be the msrp or higher than Dick's as another person mentioned. Bass pro does price match.
Dick's price matchs plus google "Dick's feedback coupon". Store nu.ber 3300, trans number 1234, random date, random purchase price. Take survey for $10 of $50. It stacks with any purchases, discount, price match... I just just throw a filler item in the mix.
