The guy behind the counter told me they were made for DSG by Shimano ? Any truth in that ?

Ahhh yes, the sage wisdom of the Dicks employee.......tis to be taken with many a grain of salt. They are wizard like.
I personally wouldn't believe it. I tried to do some research for you but was unable to find any substantial evidence that the statement was true.
I haven't a clue who makes the DSG rods, but a larger question might be...are Shimano rods made by Shimano? My Cumara "A" had a Made in China sticker on it. Now, is that a wholely owned Shimano plant in China...or did Shimano outsource the rod to an OEM in China...? It's a nice rod, so I guess I don't really care where it was made...
when I worked at dicks our field and steam rods were made by pure fishing

Post of the day! I actually chuckled out loud.
I bought one of the inferno's to keep in my car as an emergency fishing rod. Looks good but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

But! But! They have little posters for each department that say they are Pros!
I was the only one at the store I worked at that had a clue...they refused to make me a manager so I bailed
you guys gotta understand that most of dicks employees are there for just a paycheck. I was there as a college student with to much spare time in the winter months who eats and breathes fishing
I upset many fishermen when I told them the ugly stick is a pos lol
you think the dicks employees are dumb? 98percent of the customers are even more stupid
Edited by ColdSVTThis absolutely kills me. Dicks is terrible. Never have stock of anything, only carry a select select few decent rods and reels, and they have zero knowledge. Don't shop at Dicks. Buy local or at a good online vendor.
A lot of it depends on which DSG and location I guess on the knowledge and selection. If I go to Rochester the DSG stores suck the employees are trained monkeys and no selection. If I go to Buffalo in the big mall they have tons it's a bigger store then most(2 floors) they have tons of selection and there is always a guy at the counter with the nicer reels and he will talk bass fishing for ever with you I know cuz I ticked off my ex wife standing there talking bout fishing lake Erie for like a hour and a half and then left with the guys card and a offer to go fishing and try some of his home made spinners.

Management material for sure...

lol...leadership ability yes, ability to deal with people who are idiots and such nope...lol
I was not after a a store managers job anyway. I was looking for a product and buying managers job. even though I made my store a ton of money after my boss let me do the fishing orders corperate decided that since I didnt have an mba I couldnt replace the guy they fired
I wanted to be the guy that put the right fishing equipment in the stores. not 100 saltwater boat rods in a store 500miles from the sea
I can't speak for fishing manufacturers, specifically... But, in my industry (computers) there are single factories in China that are churning out almost identical computers (component-wise) that are getting stuffed in different cases and have different major-company and store labels on them. Same computer, same factory line, different 'brands'.
I won't even touch on how the Chinese do (or, more correctly, don't) honor intellectual property laws.
So, is it a Shimano reel? Who knows... But, as has been noted, it's increasingly true that a Shimano reel is made for Shimano by another company using Shimano's design and specifications, anyway.
Does it meet your price point? Does it feel ok from what you can tell on the sales floor? Do you feel like trying to find a diamond in the rought? After all, what's life without a little experimentation and adventure?

Sounds like a bit of an attitude going on there.
Don't know if I would want to deal with an employee who was stupid, (your words), and thought I was as stupid as he is. I work at BPS, and I feel I am there to assist the customer in getting what he or she wants, not tell him his choice is a POS. I am there to assist, not belittle them, or make sure they, and my co-workers, and my supervisors are aware of my superiority......sheesh!!!

I would advise against a retail career
ok ok guys slow down just a sec let me address my stupidness
pitch forks down? ok good
first things first i never belittled anyone and I am far from smart
the 98% of customers being stupid part:
they werent "stupid" as i put it in the traditional sense. they just failed to do research on what they were looking for. Where they were "stupid" is for the most part when they came into the store thinking that the guy in footware knew where the senkos were or the cashier knowing the difference between a squarebill and a deep crank. OK sometimes there was that guy who had to see just how far a rod would bend before it broke or the one who put the zebco 202 on the 11ft surf rod (that was funny!)
Their intelligence was not the problem it was them not using common sense to get to where they wanted to be and thier assumption that i was just there to push product. I didn't push anything save for do not leave your empty soda cup on my counter.
As for me. I never belittled anyone, i treated everyone with great respect nomatter the situation. However when i was asked my thoughts on a certain product i was always 100% honest. Most of the time the customer appreciated my honesty, especially when it saved them money.
Yes i hate the ugly stick as much i hate Al Qaeda, but i sold A LOT of them. When i did give my honest opinion i always showed the customers products of similar price (some a hair higher and some a hair lower) and i let them try them out until they could form a good opinion of what they had in thier hands.
I'm not as bad as i sounded in the first post. Yes my wording sucked and i apologize for that.
That being said nascar you are right when i a career in retail would be a bad choice for me. i hated it. I do miss teaching the kids how to rig stuff and use thier rods and reels though, that was fun.

The one by me has a wonderful selection. I buy tons of stuff from there. More than half of it is gone here due to this pic being taken after xmas. You cant even see the other row of reels on the far left or the reels on the other side of the display. Baits galore and a nice saltwater area. I could only fit so much in this pic which I took for my friend.
I asked him for proof and all he said was that is what he was told lol.
Man that is a nice dicks there. Seriously we only have a hand full of lures on the shelf almost all the time. I honestly love Academy. They always have their stuff stocked here. Could just be the management.
Shimano reels are made in Shimano facilities, period. Every single one. There is only one other company in the industry that can say that.
As far as the OP, there is zero truth in the statement that Shimano makes Dicks rods.
The dicks rods do come from Pure Fishing.. Only reason I know is because I have unpacked about 300 of them.
To ColdSVT, Im not sure how you could have possibly made the comment that your manager put you in charge of buying for your store. Every store goes straight through distribution and nothing is left to the store in terms of having any say of what they can or will get in. Only once a year is the opportunity given to employees to make half a dozen recommendations per department on what they should carry. Contracts are made with the companies with bulk ordering and it is split up by inventory, location and sale potential from there. If your manager said you had anything to do with the way your store got inventory you got fooled big time, or your lying. I've worked there for a few years now.
Repeat after me "The enthusiast is not your customer"
Sporting goods stores derive most of their profits from things other than fishing and "outdoors". Licensed apparel, footwear, golf, and believe it or not socks account for the bulk of their sales. Their business model is different than that of a specialty shop, which must cater to a different clientele. Folks who are "serious" about an activity spend less (or more accurately purchase less at full price) than casual or occasional shoppers. In a perfect world each department would function as boutique, and a few have had some success with this, but it is very difficult, particularly for a publicly traded company like DSG. I must say that Academy does a terrific job at it. So shop the winter clearance with your $10 off a $50 purchase coupon, and move on with your life, or go to the tackle shop and pay MSRP.

I went there tonight and it was my 1st time seeing these rods. They looked like cumaras which were also there close by. I saw a 7ft6 heavy for 34 bucks then noticed it was 2 piece..then saw all rods were 2 piece. Might be a good trunk rod as you said. Let us know how it works out.

you are absolutely right
however I was allowed to for the lodge and the lodge only. I went through our DM, who told our distro what I wanted. it worked oit pretty good. I listened to what our customes in our district wanted and thats what we ordered. it worked out great for our store and district.
when my manager and DM left it stopped. that was about the same time our district got merged with another district. I was leaving near the same time to return to school. this was a good bit of years ago. im sure the company has changed a lot since then

What store and department do you work in? Shoot me a PM buddy.
DSG is not a fishing store, it's an all round store for many types of athletic activities. The store Diggy refers to actually has a pretty decent selection and I like their saltwater section. The DSG by me is a couple of miles from the ocean yet their saltwater dept. is a bit lackluster, could be Diggy's is a 2 story and mine is a 1 story building.
I think most would agree that an Ugly Stick is not the most ideal bass rod, that doesn't make it a bad rod especially for the value. I'd be willing to bet that on any given day I see more Ugly Sticks being used than all other brands combined, both being used offshore and inshore. Used by bait fisherman and by many that strictly toss lures, it ain't a bad stick for the money and the use. Where I fish if you don't know you're getting a strike, no rod in the world is going to help you.
The snook in my avatar was caught on my uglystick blue series.

And a nice snook it is.
It all depends on location and what group dick's is going after. The DSP I went to in florida when visiting a friend had a fishing section both freshwater and saltwater that was miles and miles beyond what I see here. If the demand is there, the stores will cater to it. Here in NY the Dick's is lame. Go down to danbury and its 3x the size and has some loomis g2's, rage rods, garcia villains etc. Not high end, but mid tier and especially higher than what the Poughkeepsie store has.
