G.loomis Imx Or St. Croix Avid? 2024

fishing user avatarTriton Man reply :

If you had the option between these two in a 6'6" Medium Fast for the exact same price which one would you get and what would you use it for. I know they should both be pretty good all around rods. Is one better for certain techniques than the other?

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

I would take the avid based on my experience with avids and IMX loomis rods! I had a imx spinning rod that i sold because it wasnt what i liked! I currently have 4 avids. medium fast would be for spinnerbaits and jerkbaits!

fishing user avatarDave T. reply :

I'll have to defer to 00 mod and others on the IMX. However, I have fished the Avid, and it is a fine rod for the money... and then some.

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

I would choose the IMX. I already have a 6' CR723 IMX and a 7' MBR 844 IMX. I would use it for light Texas rigs, light jigs, small swimbaits, spinnerbaits and small shallow running cranks.

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

I'd take the IMX every time. It's lighter and has better components, but not by a lot. I'd call it complete preference, however.

fishing user avatarTriton Man reply :

I am looking at the SJR782. I dont really understand the numbering system for g loomis and the website wasn't very helpful. I've never bought a loomis and rarely look at them because of the costs. I found this on sale new online for a little less than the equivalent sc avid. I like throwing jerkbaits and spinnerbaits most of the time so that will be a good fit. Would you say the power is the same as the avid?

fishing user avatarMrSwimJig reply :

The Avid is going to be a little bit stiffer, St Croix rods are under rated. Both rods are excellent rods and I would go with the IMX because I do not like the hump grip on the Avids.

Theses rods would be great all around rods.

fishing user avatarbigfishbk86 reply :

I'd go with the avid personally. To what kckid said, i sanded down the hump on the avids i used to own.

fishing user avatarTriton Man reply :

Ordered the Loomis because the price seemed too good to pass up on a well respected rod. I'm going to have to test it in the river for walleye until the ice melts away. Might not be long the way this winter has been.

St Croix top rods on sale

http://www.stcroixro...water-23-1.html

Xtremes for $250 -XC66MF- and Legends Tour Bass for $160- LTBC70MF

fishing user avatarTriton Man reply :

Thats VERY dissapointing. Right after Christmas I ordered the Legend Tournament Bass Spinning rod 6'9" ml xf from gander mtn on sale with some Christmas gift cards and they were not able to fulfill my order. I've been looking for a good deal since when I found these Loomis rods on sale from gander mtn and thought it might be similar to the LTB at a slightly better price. Oh well, hope I like the loomis better than I would have like the LTB. I wont be able to compare so it doesn't matter.

SJR = series

78 = inches, 78" = 6 1/2 feet

2 = medium light power

fishing user avatarTriton Man reply :

Thanks for the explanation roadwarrior. Most companies use a pretty logical system. I should have tried just a bit harder and I would have figured it out.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Locally, Avids are much easier to come by in person. The G.Loomis rack is often empty.

fishing user avatarLucky Craft Man reply :

I really don't think you could lose with either. I personally like the G Loomis IMX and being that is what you bought, I think you will be happy.

Hey Quake, I don't know if I should thank you, or take your name in vain. LOL

Just had to spend some more money on gear. Got the LTBC70MF. I've been wanting another one of those for a while. This was too good to pass up.

Thanks,

GK

fishing user avatarQUAKEnSHAKE reply :

Glad to have helped

They had this discount sale about a month ago and I got an Elite for $132

Got the LTBC70MF.

I'm almost certain you'll end up with two. That rod and the MHF cover 90% of most bas fishing needs.

fishing user avatarnorthern basser reply :

I would choose the IMX.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

I have four Avids and two Legend Elite. The LE are comparable to the G. Loomis IMX,

the Avids are not. However, I consider the Avid series to be the "best value" at the

pricing point and excellent rods.

fishing user avatarTriton Man reply :

Thats good to know. I do have an avid and like it, currently my most expensive rod. Like everyone I'm always trying to upgrade my tackle if its within my budget. I am hoping to take the imx when it arrives and my avid and mojo and test them all with the same reel and lures to really compare them.

This is the second one. If I don't force myself to stay away from St Croix's sale site, I might end up with three. LOL

I have that rod, in GL2 and IMX, it´s not quite like RW says, it´s not exactly medium light, it´s more powerful than a ML but not quite as powerful as the trigger model in 2 power. It´s a great small/mid weight ( 1/16 - 1/4 oz ) rod, the tip is soft but it has a lot of backbone for setting the hook in both, hard and soft baits, superb jerkbait rod ( both, soft and hard ).

fishing user avatarTriton Man reply :

I also ordered a st croix eyecon 6'3" med. xf that I was planning on using as a jerkbait/skipping/topwater rod and possibly drop shot but maybe I will return it if the loomis is going to fill that niche better.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Both rods are great but I'm a St.Croix guy myself. They've always been good to me so I've never felt a need to change to something different.

Where have you been? It's nice to have you back in the hood!

p.s.

"It´s a great small/mid weight ( 1/16 - 1/4 oz ) rod"...

That sure sounds ML to me.

fishing user avatarTriton Man reply :

I just recieved the IMX so I took it right out to open water at the river and gave it a very fast comparison to my avid. It seems like I am going to like it but it did not blow the avid away....yet.

Comparison Test:

6'6" med, fast Avid and 6'6" med, fast IMX

I used the same Quantum Energy 20 spinning reel with 6lb Spiderwire 100%fluro and casted a husky jerk and a 4 inch Senko with both rods. Both seemed to cast the same distance with both lures. Bottom contact sensitivity with the Senko rolling along the bottom seemed equal to me.

The IMX is a slightly softer action and smaller blank as shown in the lure ratings

Avid-3/16 to 5/8oz

IMX-1/8 to 3/8oz

Handles- both are the same length and reel seats are in identical positons. Prefer the Avid for reel screw below the reel so all my hand is on the cork instead of my index finger on the screw threads as on the IMX.

Balance-both were identical at just under my index finger while holding the reel between my last two fingers.

Weight-no perceivable difference to me

Guides-one less on the IMX, also IMX stripper guide is smaller and closer to the reel. (Slight weight reduction?)

Results

Way to early to actually test the IMX and 20 minutes on the river is not ideal. I do really like it though and think it will be a great companion for the Avid I have. Those two rods could cover almost all my usual fishing needs. I have two Energy 20 reels so I will be able to closely compare them this year. At this point though, I'm glad I got the IMX on sale for less than a regular priced Avid because I dont see the benefit of paying $80 more for the regular priced IMX over the Avid. Maybe I will change my mind once I fish it more and will post again after I do that.

I have a 7' MF St. Croix LE and a 6'6" MLF St. Croix LTB (1/8 oz to 3/8 oz)

It sounds like the IMX is very similar to the MLF St. Croix rods, as my LTB is obviously softer in the tip than my LE. Even thought they are fairly close in rating, they are pretty different rods. The MF is a much stouter rod... pretty hard to compare them other than that. However, they are both are excellent when used within their weight ranges... I'm betting the IMX will be the same way.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Mercedes vs. BMW.

Can't go wrong with either.

I would go with the G. Loomis, but that is just me.

That pretty much sums it up, you can´t go wrong, personally I prefer GLoomis, there´s something about the way they feel that I can´t find in St Croix ( kinda "stiff" feeling ).
