Mine arrived today and I tore it down. Handle is same length as curado 200. Spool is 15.5grams with no line. Waiting for bearings to soak and gonna go fish it.
Looking forward to your feedback on how you like it. We're you able to remove the gear side bearing to soak it or do you do it another way

The drive shaft bearing is the only bearing i don't mess with in a brand new reel. All i want is smoothness and protection with that bearing. I prefer grease.
In tearing it apart i did notice two differences compared to a 200i. No spring under spool tension knob in the 70. Bearing is held in with a clip, and Cap by an o'ring.
Then there's a small washer on top of the top drag washer, this little washer has the two grooves for the roller bearing sleeve to fit into.
The palm side plate on the 70 comes completely off.
My 2.5hr review...Better reel then the 50e. (wasn't the biggest fan of the 50) There's nothing on this reel that i'd want to upgrade.
Could you post a side by side comparison with the curado I?
First of many I hope...
Mine should be here soon...can't wait
Where did you get the reel from? I have one on pre-order and I'm anxious to get mine! I did get my Scorpion 70HG already though.
Thank you for the comparison pics! It does look a good bit smaller for sure. The curado 200I already has a smaller profile as it was.
Anyone fish with theirs yet? I'm incredibly close to pulling the trigger on one at full retail, and I cannot remember the last time I paid full retail for a rod or reel. Just seems like the perfect addition for my Dobyns HP 742, but I'd love to read a review from someone before ordering it.

Yes, Fished it yesterday for two and half hours. I'm loving this reel so far. Yesterday it was a little tight, but i just got done re greasing and oiling bearings. Never got a backlash or an over run yesterday even with a breeze. Today it felt as the reel loosened up a bit, got a couple backlashes, and only had to tighten the knob from 2 to 4 (Two brakes on, Pipe oiled). Both days i stuck to dropshoting a 3/16 weight, 4.5 robo, and a mesquito hook. Handled it great. Casting is a dream.Drag is smooth, It truly feels like a mini 200i with less effort to cast (solid).
I put 20# regular PP and 6# izorline leader on it.
Sweet! Looks like the 8.2 I had in my cart at TW just sold out, so it's going to have to be a 7.2 for me. Thanks for the update!!

What rod?
Phenix Recon2, 713ML
Another thing i noticed with curado I vs E is line guide now sits higher on the I's. Both 200 and 70.
My wife got me the 71HG for my birthday. This is a great reel for really light baits (Weightless Senkos and Flukes, etc...)! Make sure you dial in the brakes way more than you normally would for most reels. Monster back-lash on my first cast. Felt like a fool. Fixed it and lashed a few more times (Less severe) before I really realized just how low mass and free spinning the spool is.
Get one and apply the brakes liberally until you get a handle on how it handles... Hehe.
It's an awesome reel. I would have ordered the XG (Wife ordered it as a surprise), but the HG still works just fine for what I do.
These really are great little reels. I have a couple of the 70XG's and they are primarily used for plastics fishing and once I got them "tuned in" they really fish themselves. At the outset, it surprised me at how much pressure I had to put on the cast control cap with two brakes on and an outside side dial setting "2" to get the spool to settle down, but I still got the distance. It seemed it had to be a little tighter than my other Shimano Curados and Chronarchs. Both of mine are spooled with InvizX 15lb flouro, which is only .013" in diameter.

Are you guys setting the cast control so that the lure falls really slow? I had/still have a problem dialing in my Curado71HG. I initially got it as a reel for weightless soft plastics (Keitech SIF 3.8, Flukes, Senkos etc.) and would have overruns 3 out of 5 casts.
I have it set so that the lure falls slow with 4 brakes on and the dial set between 4-6 and still get backlashes...
Although the handle sizes are the same size, the knob size is bigger/better on the 200i.
A bigger knob is always better.

Can you describe the rest of your setup? I bought a Curado 70, MXF rod, and 20lb braid for exactly the same applications and had crazy overruns my first time out with it. I think I had the spool a little bit overfilled and definitely didn't have the brakes turned up high enough.
Now I have no issues throwing weightless 5" senkos and super flukes if I set the dial at 6 with 3 brakes on. I'm satisfied with the casting distance with the brakes turned up that high.

I have the Curado on a *** NV Blak M/F with 10lb. Sniper.
Just get familiar with the brakes first then slowly work your way to less braking it has a fast spool so practice more. I have 2 70's the HG and XG. I have 16# sniper FC on the Hg and 40# Samurai braid on the XG. The tension is set light on both- example, a 5/0 ewg hook can fall and cause overrun of spool from a three foot fall. The HG sniper reel is set at 2 internal use dial as needed. The XG samurai being its braid and behaves much better than FC I go to 1 internal and use dial as needed. Ive had 20# braid on the HG and threw 1/20 trd ned rigs easily with the reel but use 2 internal.
I have the 70XG and was getting backlashes a lot more than I thought I should and my distance sucked- i.e. wasn't getting them on the Curado 200i's which were also bombing casts. My father-in-law (40+ years bass fishing) and I went out in the yard and he watched me cast. I had two brakes on and the dial set to 5. Backlash. He said my form wasn't correct- I wasn't allowing the rod to load up. I put three brakes on and my distance got worse, but no backlash.
He suggested, turn just one brake on and set the dial to 1 or 2 and let the rod load up (he showed me with his setup). I told him he'll need to fix the ensuing bird's nest and/or respool my line. I went ahead and changed the settings, cast.. and WOW! Probably went 45- 50 yards with no backlash. This is with a 3/8 plug and 30# Sufix 832 with a FC leader (FG knot) on a Kistler Mag2 6'8" Light MH Fast Mod rod.
Tension knob set so no side play in spool and plug dropped slowly to ground.

How are you casting? Overhead, Sidearm, Roll? I have found that I backlash less with the Curado with the sidearm or roll cast. Overhead, backlash city...
It was sidearm... and I agree, less backlash for me with that method.
I think the issue was that my brakes were set too high and I was forcing the cast to get distance- hence the bad form. I did a few overhead casts and no problem, good distance, no backlash.

My current setup with the Shimano Curado 71HG:
***..-feeshin' OmenBlack - 7'3" Medium, Fast Tip
10~12lb Co-poly line
#2 EWG Superline Hook and a Zoom Fluke (Weightless other than the heavier hook)
all four centrifugal weights flipped on/out (I.e. away from the rotational axis) and the fine tuning brake dial is at about 3.75
Your mileage may vary...
Crank all the brakes to just about maximum and work your way backwards - lightening up each in very small increments
That's what I had to do to get a feel for the right settings on that reel. It's an awesome reel once you get it figured out.
Mine is set at Two on/Two off with dialed at 3 to 4 depending on the weight of the lure.
I'm going to test out three off and one on when I get back in the states.
