BPS Pro Qualifier or BPS Extreme 2025

Im planning on stocking up before the spring and I need a new baitcaster. Looking to use what I get for cranking . Ive compared the details and specs of both reels that the catalog gave me, all i could really see is the Extreme had different braking. The Pro Qualifier appealed to me cosmetically. But the Extreme appealed because of its price difference, but I would rather spend the extra $20 for a decent reel, im tired of wasting my money on junk. I liked that the Extreme reel comes in different model that are technique specific also. I was looking for yall's opinions on both, anything specifically positive or any negative. If you have any other reels in the $110 and under range, id appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, Brian.

I honestly think the Pro Qualifier is worth the extra money. They are very similar in construction, with almost all parts interchanging.
The PQ comes with better bearings, and IMO better ergonomics. It's just a little smaller.
You could always pick up a used Revo S, and swap BPS Extreme gears in 5.4.1 into it for a centrifugal Revo for crankbaiting....Much cheaper than the Winch.

also.. pro qualifier and extreme r nice reels.. id go with a revo S though for the price you're lookin at.. im sure your gonna see 5 million people on here tell you to look at a shimano citica too

In addition to the points made by Sanother siteBASSER, the PQ has dual-braking (both magnetic and centrifugal), giving more control over all periods of the cast, while the Extreme has magnetic braking only. Well worth the price difference IMO. Also, the PQ is now available in 4.7 and 5.2 ratios, in addition to the original 6.4 and 7.1 - giving a product range nearly as broad as the Extreme.
As far as other reels in the $110 or under price range - some of the other brand "posse's" will probably be along soon... :

With the addition of the 4.7:1 ratio on the Pro Qualifier's side, it now covers a speed the Extreme does not. Could be useful for deep cranking and slowrolling spinnerbaits.
I think both reels are excellent choices, I personally have 4 Extreme reels (one still in the box) cause I thought they were that good. But mine are the older ones before the magnetic only braking. I have the ITB braking in mine. I got 2 of the 6.4:1 ratios for general use of different baits, a 5.4:1 ratio for cranking, and a 7.1:1 ratio for jigging and worming.
If I were to get new reels today I'd get the Pro Qualifier just cause it has the dual braking and it's a sharp looking reel! But for a budget, the current version of the Extreme is a good one. That's as low in the BPS line as I'd go though. Any lower and you give up the aluminum frame.

Actually the bps extrem isn't bad for the $$$ I have one that's 2 yrs old and still works fine. Only thing is the friction adjustment knob needs to be adjusted alot compared to say, a JM model, or a higher priced reel. I'm not a big fan of magnetic brakes either..

At 80 dollars the PQ is a steal. It's an awesome reel for that much. I have a citica and personally for 40 dollars more it's not worth the extra money they both have very similar performances. I would wait until it is only 80 though otherwise if you were to spend 100 on it you might as well get a Citica.

At $80 I'm thinking that is with the reel trade in, but they could have them on sale as well and get it for less than that.

I have three Extremes and two PQs. I think both are good reels for the money. The PQ is smoother and the dual control is great. I will be buying all PQs in the future. Just my $.02

I have both and I would take the Pro Qualifier by a mile. Gonna buy 4 more at the Spring Classic. I still like my Revo SX's better than the PQ but not enough to pay the difference. ;D

I was a huge fan of the Extremes until they went to mag. brake. I have roughly 10 of the older ones with centrifugal system.
I just ordered 2 of the PQ and have not received them yet. However, I would go with the PQ for the dual braking.

6.4 works for me as an all-round reel. I'm hoping the Carbonlite goes down to about $100 during the spring sale and I will grab one to put on the MBR842 
BUT, I will still be getting another PQ in 5.2:1 as well. That will give me 5 PQs...

Thanks for all the replies/comments, im gonna go with gettin the PQ. You guys mentioned the reel-trade in, I saw this in the catalog for BPS too. Anyone ever do that before? What kinda discount should I expect at if I trade in an Ambassadeur 4600 CL3?

Discount is based upon the value of the reel being purchased.

I think you'll like the PQ
You might want to keep your Ambassadeur as a back-up reel or for another combo. If you do decide to sell it - check out the going rate on eBay - you will probably get much more for the reel in a sale on eBay or on the Flea Market on this board than as a trade-in at BPS.

I just put the stock Abu Garcia carbon matrix drag washers in a Pro Lite, and in a Pro Qualifier recently....HUGE difference in strength and in how smooth the drag is.
Maybe not worth doing out of the box, but eventually it's a good idea to replace the drag washers. When that happens go for the carbon drag washers.

I purcahsed a Pro Qualifier last year and have been quite happy with it. It looks great, and casts and handles well.

Which Abu garcia model drag washers did you use to put into the Pro Qualifier? I replaced mine with Carbontex washers from smoothdrag. I have smoother and stronger drag as a result. i am curious if the Abu Garcia washers would be even better?

I have a PQ and so does my wife. We've had them since last spring, and so far I have nothing but good things to say about them. As long as they hold up well, I say the PQ is a excellent deal for $100.00 and even that much better when on sale. Have not used a citica or revo s so can't compare those. Love my curado and revo sx,stx's but a much higher priced real.
Since Shimano and Abu usually run higher for a "good" real, should it be a concern for the quality of there more competitive reels like the citica and revo s? Seeing BPS isn't really a "brand name" a reel in the citica price range could be a bit better reel since your not buying that name. Thats just a thought, someone with more expertise in that area please comment. I am considering one of the above reels for my wife, but wonder should I just get another PQ, or spend some extra and get a revo sx? She's not as serious as I am about fishing, but I'd like her to have another good set-up.

BPS gear sets will fit in a REVO? Are you positive about this? I could get a 4.7:1 gearset and turn my Unused REVO SX's into deeep crankers? 8-)
