managed to catch these 2 off the same bed earlier today before the thunderstorms rolled in here. weighed 5-11 and 7-6. released after a few pix. hope y'all are catchin' some too.
Nice!
what are you catching all the these bed fish on? NICE looking fish!
Quotewhat are you catching all the these bed fish on?
bluegills.
nice fish!
but i always wondered, how do you take pics of multiple fish at the same time if you release them all?
Nothin' but average...
I wish that was my "average".
Nice fish!
8-)
Quotehow do you take pics of multiple fish at the same time if you release them all?
i have a HUGE plastic container that holds lots of water. you can get 'em at wal-mart. keep it in the back of my truck. it's my makeshift "livewell". but i don't keep 'em in there long. these 2 fish were both on the same bed and both were acting very "catchable" so i was pretty sure i could get 'em both for pix. after catchin' the first, i put it in the container and went and caught the second. got the pix and released 'em.
Nice fish Paul!
Your on a roll!! Now all you have to do is catch them on artificial bluegill insted of real ones. Actualy if it legal and your not fishing tournaments and your getting results the I wouldnt change a thing.
If I know live bait will get me bit over artaficials then I have NO problem using it. Out here swimbaits will out fish live bait almost always. If you ever do fish a tourny during the spawn you will have a very good idea on how to catch them just make the fake gill do what the real ones were doing when they got bit. You are actualy teaching your self without even trying to.
Congrats on all your recent big fish!!! keep posting them pics
Those are some nice fat chicks you've got there Hawg Caller!
Nice fish, but would have been better if caught on a lure. Try out a mattlures ultimate bluegill. Great looking bait. Do you fish lures at all? Or just live bait?
Really nice fish my friend 8-)! How can we be catching any nice ones?.....You're catching them all !!!
As Ever,
first, thanks to everyone for their kind words again.
QuoteNice fish, but would have been better if caught on a lure.
i must admit i'm a bit confused by this. better how? for who? would the fish have weighed more? fought harder? looked prettier?
QuoteDo you fish lures at all? Or just live bait?
both. i try to fish whatever legal method is going to work best in the given situation to produce fish - preferably big ones. this is the bottom line for me. i try to keep my mind open to all possibilities. i'm not trying to win tournaments or popularity contests. i'm not interested in points for style or degree of difficulty. in fact quite the opposite. i prefer simple over complex. i prefer easy over difficult. i feel that this way i can make the best use of fishing time and maximize results. this is just how i think and how i fish. this might not be the way for everyone and that's cool, but it works for me.
QuoteTry out a mattlures ultimate bluegill. Great looking bait.
i also think matt makes an incredible bait. the detail is stunning. no doubt the best bluegill imitation i've ever seen. and i am going to check into 'em. live ones are not always available when you need 'em.
good fishin' to all of y'all.
i *** you
Wish I could find 1 bass like that in Wisconsin. I'm in lust with most all the hawgs I see posted here!! Awesome.
Frog thank you and I apreciate the support but I respectfuly disagree.
I have no problem using live bait. If it works and you catch the fish and its legal then by all means keep using it. I personaly dont use it very often because I tend to catch smaller fish with live bait. If it will get me a bigger bite you better believe I will use it.
People also overestimate live bait. It aint a silver bullet. You still have to fish it and many times I think its harder to use. Sometimes its easy but not always. Hawg Caller has recently caught some verry nice fish using a legal method that worked. The fish were released so he can catch them when they are teens. I just mentioned my gills because if he ever chose to use one for bedding fish he would have intimate knowledge on how to present the bait. All he has to do is understand what the real gill was doing to provoce the strike.
Congrats again on all your recent big bed fish. I for one know live bait is not a given and you most certainly earned those fish.
Now go get a teener!!!!
Sorry, didn't mean to come off like a jerk. I am just more of a strictly lure type of guy. I just think live bait is sorta cheating, but that is just my thought. I like the challenge of making something not living, look living. But to each his own. They are nice fish no matter what they were caught on. I shouldn't have said it like that. Sorry!
no offense taken buddy. i didn't think you were being a jerk at all. you expressed your opinion and that's cool. i know you are not the only one who feels that way. you've got nothing to apologize for in my book.
you are right - to each his own. good luck to you no matter how you choose to catch 'em.
Those are some great fish Hawg Caller! I bet it was a rush.
Why are you removing fish from the beds for that long?
Its one thing to get a hog off its bed then put it back. But to take both male and female off the bed, and haul them around town, while the nest gets ransacked?
In my opinion it's sketchy enough to be fishing beds with live bait, but to pull both fish (and high quality fish at that) off the bed....for a picture? :-?
Im not tryin to jump on ya man, I'm really not. I'm just have a hard time understanding why someone who cleary has an appreciation for big bass (not to mention a knack for finding them) would want to facilitate the destruction of said big fishes' spawn?
Again, not trying to criticize, just trying to undrestand.

i apologize for taking so long to respond to your isssues. i have been busy today. hopefully after i post this, all will be clear and this thread will just die. i will not make the mistake of bringing up bed fishing or live bait again - especially not together.
it seems your basic question is along the lines of: why would i use live bait and take big bass off beds for pictures while the nest gets raided?
here's your answer. in this particular family owned lake where i caught these 2 fish, there is a problem with overpopulation. fish must be removed from time to time for the health of the lake and the growth of the bass therein. this being the case, it does not matter to me if the nests are raided in the short time it takes me to get pix of fish i catch off beds. i couldn't care less if none of the fry hatch to be honest with you. i want as few small fish in there as possible. those that do hatch and survive, i will just have to remove later on and donate to other kind landowners who allow me and my 6 y.o. to come and fish. if they don't want 'em, we have some fish frys. apparently my bed fishing didn't have too much impact (and never has), because i counted 4 huge fry clouds out there last visit.
but just so you know, this is not the norm for me. in the other lakes i fish, i do not bother spawners at all unless i happen to find a trophy class fish. if i am fortunate enough to catch her, she goes right back to the bed within minutes. if i have a buddy with me to take pix, great. if not, i just put her back without pix. i completely understand the importance of big fish genetics being passed on.
as far as you just wanting to understand and not criticize, i don't buy that for a minute. if that was the case you would have just let this thread die and pm'd me. now i realize that you might (probably will) disregard my explaination above and come up with your own theory as to why i catch big bass off beds with bluegill for pictures. so here are a few other explainations from which you can select to form your opinion.
a. because i am an evil lunker bass terrorist bent on the destruction of the world's bass population, starting in tennessee.
b. because i am just a backwards redneck country boy who doesn't know any better.
c. because i am ignorant and unskilled in "real" bass catching knowledge and techniques like yourself, so i cut corners and take shortcuts.
d. because i lack any meaningful human companionship so i have to "haul bass around town" to keep me company.
e. because i just love getting replies such as yours to my posts from folks who don't have their facts straight.
have a nice day and please let this thread die.
Not dead yet brotha. Please, Please do not stop going for those lunkers. I appreciate your posts and respect your fishing manners. Nothing wrong at all for live baiting and I don't think any explanation of your sportsmanship is, or was, needed. Tight Lines my fellow backwoods redneck.
hawg, again I really am not here to criticize, just understand. If you don't belive me thats fine.
Quotefolks who don't have their facts straight
Now I have all the facts straight. Thank you. Didn't realize it was a private lake with an overpopulation problem! Have at friend, its your lake, its your fish, its none of my business. But I didn't know that untill you responded. And perhaps, niether did any of the younger, more inexperienced anglers who were considering doing the same thing on public lakes were big fish genes aren't running rampant.
As far as the live bait thing goes, I apologize for expressing my opinion where it wasn't warranted. Fact is, that was the issue I was least worried about, but it just kinda slipped out. Late night post...what can I say.
No, I dont think your a bass "terrorist", or a "backwards redneck that doesn't know better." To draw such conclusions about someone about based on a fishing report is just plain silly.
I only care about the fish, believe it. When I saw a picture of two fish that had been pulled off the same bed for God knows how long, I felt it was a situation that deserved public inquiry. Thats why I begged for some understanding. Hopefullly there is a young guy out there reading this, and it gets the brain working. Big fish are a beautiful thing, I'm sure you want as many on this green earth as I do. Singing the praises of practices that insure the spawn and survival of big fish are crucial, especially in a venue such as BassResource.com, where untold thousands are reading.
I tried to approach my first post with as much tact as possible, and i apologize if I ruffled feathers, but you must understand I'd do it again if given a second chance. I hope there is no hard feelings. Let me conclude by saying that those are two beautiful fish, and I hope you have continued success not only fishing, but also managing what appears to be true honey hole of a lake.
QuoteQuotewhat are you catching all the these bed fish on?bluegills.
That's what I used for bait to catch a great fish, no problem with it as long as it's legal. 8-)
Congrats on the great fish Hawg Caller. ;D ;D
Nice fish, buddy.
I just saw this thread or I would have been in earlier, but you don't need my help. Good job with your response, those who have seen/ read previous posts understand the program. Great fish!
Now, how 'bout another!
8-)
You guys are lucky to be able to sight fish all these hawgs, I wish the clarity allowed me to see them I know they are in my lake, but I can't see em. Ever once in a while I will catch a glimps of a big one on a bed, but I can't figure out if their still on the bed or if they are interested in the presentation. I don't just know, the water isn't clear enough. I just stinks. I can't really complain, I do catch plenty of big fish, I just want to catch some of those big bedding bass. Keep posting those big monster bass, at least some of you guys are gettin em off the beds.
