fishing user avatarthetr20one reply :

Went fishing with my brother inlaw yesterday in a downpour but that sure didn't stop the bite. I manage to catch 8 or so between 2 1/2 and 31/2. Then I caught this Toad, his scale said it weighed 2.17 so that was wrong. he did manage a few fish but I outfished him 5-1 +size. I figure this fish would have possibly been a 7 . Oh well I got a pic. OH yeah I am sorry i don't have more pics from that trip it was POURING!!!

A tube! On the Portage lakes in Ohio.

fishing user avatarNEBassMan reply :

it's hard to tell for sure, but i'd guess 4.5 - 5.5.  Great Fish!

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

Oh man please dont get offendid by this but I dont think the scale was wrong. A 7lber could litteraly eat that fish and I am not exagerating. That fish looks to be about 15in and around 2 1/2 --3lbs. It is still a fine fish. If you still feel your scale robbed you then you absolutly need to get a new one and check it first against a certified one. Then you will have no doubts

fishing user avatarpaul. reply :

great fish man.  congrats.

Which pic are you guys lookin at?

Yo guys no offense taken but, this fish was well over 5 . I have caught and scaled many, many fish 5+ pounds. I am 6'2" and my knuckles are about 4 1/2 inches across and the fish is not stretched towards the camera. The second photo with my brother is a 16" fish. I don't BS people or have any need to exaggerate weights. My brother did check his scale and it read different with the same 5 lb weight anywhere from 1.8- 3.9 so the scale was not right. Maybe not a 7 but well over 5. HMMMM? Maybe me and my brother who have collectively fished in over 250 tourneys and have seen thousands of fish weighed would misjudge a fish by three pounds. Next time I will make sure to take my boat, my scale, and my tape so I am sure I don't claim a 3 pounder to be more than a 3 pounder.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

Nice hawg, I think it looks to be around 4.5 to 5 pounds.

fishing user avatarfourbizz reply :

I would be SHOCKED if that fish went a spot over 5.5. Good fish for the midwest though.

fishing user avatar.dsaavedra. reply :

i say its about 3.5-4lbs.

i dont accuse you of lying, or trying to exaggerate, im just saying my opinion, everythings cool.

if you say your knuckles are 4.5" across, judging by that, the fish is about 19, maybe 20 inches long, and according to the weight calculator on Bass Resource (which almost everyone agrees weights fish too high), that fish would weigh 3.9lbs (19 inches) or 4.5lbs (20 inches).

there is really no way to tell from a photograph, especially when accurate lenght and girth measurements are not given. but i can tell that is no 5lber.

if you do have the length and girth but didnt post them, try using this formula to find out the weight: (girth2 × length) ÷ 800

most people will tell you this is a pretty accurate formula.

might i add, NICE FISH!!! its still bigger than most of what i catch, good job!

Nice fish,but not well over 5 lbs.Fish looks like a solid 4lber.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

I'll take five of those in any tournament or any day.

Super catch.

Now go after his mother.   :)

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

thetr20one not trying to call you out at all, and I amdefinatly not calling BS. Now had you have claimed to have weighed it and said it was 7lb I would have had to try real hard and bite my tounge, or finger. I am just agreeing with the scale. If you feel it was at least 5 lbs in your mind and you believe it then thats all that matters. If you have doubts about your scale get a new one and check before hand so there wont be any guessing.  I still say its a fine fish.

fishing user avatarthetr20one reply :

I know from the pic it doesn't look real fat but she was obviously fattening back up after her spawn and was full of shad, as were the smaller fish that day. Full of eggs she was problably a real porker. It wasn't that she was huge just thick n healthy. I have just been around long enough to know a 5 pounder give or take a half pound when I see one. She was solid, my brother in law and me both said 5 - 51/2. and  Mr. dsaavedra visit Presque Isle or another large harbor on Lake Erie and see how off the fish calculator can be with largemouth. There is a lake here where a 18" largemouth weighs up to 5 pounds (Dale Walborn reservior). Trust me guys I don't get upset with critisism. We all have our own thoughts. I just wish my tourneys were going nearly as well as my fun fishing. I've lost my mojo. These past couple fun trips might just get me jump started though.

fishing user avatarCory N reply :

That is a healthy fish man, I'm with the with the a 1/2 lb of 5 group.

The fish in my avatar weighed 5lb 7oz and there is no way it's 21 and 1/2.  They just get fat up north.

fishing user avatarFivePoundBluegill reply :

The first fish is not 7 I bet. Thing is fish always look bigger than they actually are when you land them. Excitement maybe you know. That fish is probably 4 LB range though... Here is a pic of a 4 LBer I caught....Looks about same as yours... This one was weighed at 4 LBS 4 OZ

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

You know, if you do a lot of photography you get to realize how much a lens can/will distort reality, and how critical distance-to-the-lens-plane is. This is exponentially pronounced with a wider angle lens.

The area closest to the lens and to the center will be magnified. Just an inch can matter A LOT. When taking photos, think about an invisible plane (like a pane of glass), a fixed distance in front of the lens. As you move closer, the first objects/areas that plane crosses will be the largest. The wider the lens setting the greater the distortion.

If you know this you can make fish look really big. (We always made jokes about Bill "Big Hands" Dance, and Al "Popeye Lindner.) Or really small usually unintentionally.

This also makes judging fish size, after the fact, really impossible, with any accuracy. You also cannot accurately, from a snapshot, measure a fish's length, and then say your leg or arm length, and get it right even close. You can do this, but you have to plan for it ahead of time, and be very precise in executing it.

If you want the truest photographic representation of a fish, zoom in a bit (so you are not at "wide angle"), make sure the camera lens (that invisible plane) is perfectly parallel with the subject, hold the fish so it is touching your chest (same plane as your chin) and smile. But anglers (and magazines) don't tend to want these images, preferring the distortion, for their WOW! effect. In general, mature female bass (usually 16up) have mature proportions and can pass for really big bass.

When fishing we are often in cramped quarters in a boat and the photographer has to use a wide lens setting, which sets up amazing distortion. And of course people know enough to push the fish out toward the lens, or they inadvertently end up with an arm, hand, or rod jutted forward, that then appears huge. Look at the fingers holding the fish they are likely closer to the same plane as some of the fish. They won't tell you how big the fish is, but will give you an idea of the amount of distortion in the overall picture.

The best remedy is to carry a QUALITY and CALIBRATED scale. Second best is a tape measure. We can all judge relative body condition from there and get in the ballpark on a guess, because we know a 16 bass cannot weigh 5lbs. The range for an 18 is 2 to 4lbs going from very thin to potato sack. Yes, there are waters where an 18" could be 5lbs but this is very rare and it would be obvious -your eyes would bug out of your head upon seeing such a freak.

So, here it is again. This data was taken from 1000's of northern largemouth bass. Realize that this represents average condition. Bass may vary quite a bit either side.

I enjoy all of the responses, even negative. That what makes the world go round dude! It seems to me that somebody must pee in your cornflakes on a daily basis from all the negative posts I have seen from you though. I say I have lost my mojo because of my limited time to fish lately and how rusty I was. Well it only takes a few fish to regain confidence for me, sorry!
