Stories Of Bass Getting Off The Hook! 2025

fishing user avatarcarfreac18 reply :

I had around a pound and a half bass, I know not very big, but I got him on this crankbait last night and just as I was about to take the hook out of his mouth he flipped around and broke the stupid swivel I had on the line and plopped in the water with my crank bait and swam off.. no more swivels for me haha.

I was just wondering what some of your guy's stories on this happening was. I feel like this would happen to everyone once in a while haha

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Happens all the time with treble hook baits.

Lost a big one on the Historic James River a few weeks ago, at the boat, when she threw the crankbait.

It is physics. Any slack in a treble bait line and you can wave bye-bye to the bass.

Why? It is caused by the "fulcrum power" and the bass can shake the treble hook from its mouth.

Some pros are going with low test braid with fluorocarbon leaders.

I like mono for treble hook baits to give the bass a little pull but keeping the line tight.

Sooner or later it happens to us all.

I can remember a bunch of bass that threw my crankbaits. I can see them as if it just happened.

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

Lost an (approximate) 3-4 pounder on a weightless fluke around 7:30 this morning!  Did a head shake at the side of the kayak just as I was trying to lip him, broke off near the hook and got away.  Damaged line? Bad knot? Should I have had a net? All the above? Either way, totally avoidable. Arrrgghh.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The bass that gets away is always much bigger.

Of course it is -- that's how it got away!

These stories bring back too many sad memories.....  :cry4: .............. ;)

Lost a good one during a tournament on a LC pointer. Could not keep her down and she got slack line, jumped and was gone. Its fishing, it happens.

fishing user avatareverythingthatswims reply :

All treble hook baits have a higher chance of the fish throwing the bait, big swimbaits with trebles just make it worse. Big 'ol heavy bait so it's easy for them to throw it, and the bites can be few and far between. I have had some serious heartbreaks, winding as hard as I can with the rod tip down to keep them from jumping, but sometimes it just isn't enough!

So I was out fishing with a friend the other night when either the biggest bass I have ever had on my line or the local beaver hit my jitterbug.  I fought the fish for about 6 minutes with back and forth battles.  I would get the fish or beaver to with in 10' of the boat and it would start peeling line off my reel drag screaming at me.  In the middle of one of the runs the line went slack, I was hoping that it was swimming back at me but when my jitterbug came back empty I knew it got away.  :cry4:   I had caught my PB 6.5lbs the week before at the same pond and it didn't fight half as hard as the one that I lost the other night.  Now I know it's in there I will spend the rest of the season going after the one that got away.    Here is a pic of my PB 6.5lb.  Sorry about how hard it is to see.

Unless you were using a spinning rod with 6lb test I think it's a pretty safe bet that what you lost was not a bass if you fought it for 6 minutes. Doesn't mean it's not worth going back to find out what it was though!

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I change swivels often. I use Wal-Mart swivels on my c-rigs, worm rod.

I use the more expensive quality ball bearing locking swivels on my crankbaits, spinnerbaits and topwater setups.

I'm sorry I can't tie knots.

Lost fish? My name could of been in the state record books a few times. I'm above the water about 3' looking in the surface weeds. I threw my topnocker on a long cast from shore. I put in a opening in the weeds. I seen her back out of the water when she slapped my lure. She turned like a PT boat and took it. I set the hook but couldn't hold her I made too long of a cast. She went into the weeds and was gone. My 15 minutes of fame ended.

Lost fish....ug

The pond I fish has perch, crappie, sunfish, bass, and slime darts (pickerel).  Could have been a monstah slime dart but I doubt it the fight was like a big bass.

Catfish?

fishing user avatardesmobob reply :

I lost a bunch of big bass that I had hooked on wacky-rigged Senkos using a weedless hook with a wire weed guard.  I'd usually get them right to the boat when they'd get off.  I've since changed to a hook that isn't as weedless, but gives WAY better hook-ups, that uses a pair of mono stubs as the weed guard.

Nothing will make you curse like losing a big fish at the boat!

Tight lines,

Bob

fishing user avatarNice_Bass reply :

Chasing schooling wipers on a long shallow point I hooked a flathead in the 70#-ish weight class with #12 line and a jigging spoon. Could not get it to deeper water and after about 45 min-1hr  and a couple videos' by my buddy the line broke.  Saw it when it came up about half a dozen times and briefly got on camera.  We catch them every year in the class range doing this, but this one may have even been bigger (or may have just got away...).

It was just about dark and pouring down rain all the way back to the ramp to kick me while I was down.  Got home and then had to clean fish in the rain with electric knife, did not need to drag the hose out at least!

Just needed a quick picture with it for braggin rights.

not a bass, but we were fishing for a fish with "bass" in the name!

fishing user avatarstkbassn reply :

Oh yeah, I have one. Last year me and my buddy were out on a night trip and throwing top waters for bass and striper. I hooked a big bass and my buddy did a great net job but he layed the net with bass in it on the deck of the boat which meant the net was rendered useless at that point...he layed it down quickly, went back to fishing and the bass flopped once and over the side of the boat before I could get to it.....it was over 6 without question. He's competitive and I know secretly he was glad to see it get away but that was ridiculous... I was angry for sure.

fishing user avatarFlippin4Biggins reply :

I was learning tog fish on the weed edges and I was getting nothing but little dinks all day and they just popped my jog and ran like hell .... Sharp light wire hooks barely needed to be set (meaning I wasn't power swinging) and I set it decently but not like normal.....and she didn't move at all and she came to the surface and back down into the weeds and she can off as I pulled her through the thick ****

fishing user avatarhawkoath reply :

First time fishing on a bass boat I was skipping Senkos below the docks when BAMMM a 4lb. largemouth hits it (this is on a lake and in an area more known for Smallmouth). I reel it in and when it's almost to boat it comes off. That time I didn't set the hook well enough and the biggest bummer is that it would have been the biggest largemouth of the group that we were in as well. (BTW: the only reason I am claiming its a 4lb. is because the tournament angler whose boat I was on had a good look at it and he's pretty good at estimating these things, though I believe everyone who has lost fish probably says the same lol)

There really isn't any thing wrong with a Walmart swivel provided they're used as line connectors, not to reduce line twist.  For anti twist a power swivel or BB are better options.   A swivel breaking is an anomaly, one of which I've never experienced, they shouldn't break.  That said Fisher swivels are so small they go can go thru the guides, rated at 100#, I threw them out they were too small.  Offhand I think their #3 is rated at 125#, I'd like to have the fish on my line that's going to break that.

Too many stories of fish being unbuttoned, one I remember in particular was a sailfish, hurts to lose them.  When it comes to tarpon fishing most do get unbuttoned, extremely hard mouth, many jumps and they aren't small, landing rate is pretty low.

No catfish that I have ever seen. Plus would a catfish hit a top water baits in 5 fow?

Was fishing a tiny pond near my house for the first time on an overcast day with some scattered showers. Felt the line go tight on my wacky rig, set the hook, and fought for about 45 seconds before my PB jumped and spit the hook when it was only a rod's length away from shore. Probably a 5-5.5 pounder (nothing special to you CA fishermen). Tight lines!
