Mattlures Ultimate Bluegill: Ultimate Fishing Experience 2025

fishing user avatarBassinAssassin171 reply :

I ordered a mattlure ultimate male bluegill a while ago but I haven't been able to use it until tonight.  I tied it on my heavy rod and chucked a few casts into a honey hole of mine.  On the third cast I got a quick tap and then a big hit from a bass that took off running parallel to the shore.  I lost it soon after but it got me excited.  I moved over to my favorite spot and casted around for a while with high hopes.  My friend was casting some Trick Sticks near me and we were just starting up a convorsation when I felt a nice hit just a few feet from the shoreline.  I quickly got it in and lipped the beast.  I whooped with joy when I saw the belly on that thing!  We snapped a few pics with the swimbait in the mouth and grabbed the scale..... of course... it won't turn on!!!!!  :o  >:(!!!   I was sooo angry... I frantically started searching for spare line to snip so I could get some measurments for later.  As my friend searched for some scissors I tried the scale one more time and the display screen flashed zeros  ;D

The bass went 8 lbs. exactly on the digi and made for some great pics.  Unfortunately it ripped the Mattlure while trudging stubbornly through some weeds, but I think I can fix it.  I LOVE MATTLURES!!!!   here are some pics:

Dude, I don't know if you stick pigs on a daily basis, but I'm pretty sure that if I stuck an 8+ on every $23 bait I bought, I wouldnt be whining about it.

With some creativity, and a bottle of superglue, you should be able to get that bait up and running again.

BASS, Nice fish! That thing is prefectly proportioned. I bet that made your night.

haha nice one ;)

i sure wouldnt be whining if i caught an 8 on it either! but up here in maryland, my luck i'd get a 2lber that would destroy the bait before an 8 gets a glimpse of it.  ::)

fishing user avatarsenko_77 reply :

D, Matt offers some great advice on keeping the soft plastic swimbaits together. When you first get the bait, put superglue on all the parts of the bait most likely to rip....hook hanger, where the hook exits the back, and the line tie. Then while fishing, just put on a slippery attractant like megastrike....or KY, lol. You won't have any 2lbers ripping the bait if you take care of it, and when a small rip develops, just superglue it back together before it turns into a serious problem.

I had a Matt Bluegill last me over a year and I took care of it. At the Roadtrip at Lake Guntersville, I passed it on to Electrikal and I believe he is still using it. That gill caught one over 7lbs and many smaller fish. Give it a try....soft swimbaits are donkey

fishing user avatarBassinAssassin171 reply :

in that pond I could catch multiple bass over 5 on that lure every time I go out.  I'm not complaining, thats for sure!  It certainly made my night

fishing user avatarpaul. reply :

great post and fantastic fish trey!!!  the whole bb is going swimbait crazy. :o :o :o - and for good reason, these things catch TOADS.  period, paragraph, end of story.

yeah, swimbaits are expensive, especially the good ones.  but i look at it as an investment in lunker stock, likely to return huge dividends. ;)  there's not many people i know that wouldn't pay $23 (or more) for a guaranteed shot at a trophy class fish.  that's exactly what swimbaits offer.

i'm happy for ya trey.  that's a hoss of a bass anywhere in this country.

swimbait fever - catch it! ;D

lol dude dont get to cocky we have both been spoiled to have big fish caught on our first swimbait outing ,of course we should always be confident but i mean come on big fish are tough to come by i dont think we can expect to catch multiple fish over 5 pounds on every trip lets be real  ;)

fishing user avatarmike bat reply :

1st great bass ,,, a hogg for sure ...

now depending on how bad the rip is ... you should be able to fixx it easy ... can you see where the hook was molded ??? if so put the hook back in its slot ... get a lighter zippo and a paper clip ,,, un bend the paper clip so you have a nice straight peice ... lite the liter and set it on the table ( a gas stove will work too ) .... heat up the clip not too hot but fairly hott ... slide the hot clip through the rip ( take it slow ) make sure the gill is coming together even on bolth sides ... once you run the clip through hold the gill together ... then let it cool ,,, this works my friend ... i have a baby bass ive mended 3 different times ...

ohh let it cool for an hour or so ... then boil a pot of water ,, once the water is boiling good ... tie a 2 foot peice of line to the gill ... hold the line and put the gill in the water ... olny up to the eyes ,, dont get the eyes in the boiling water ... 2 mins or less let air cool ,,,. hang the bait by that peice of line and let cool in the air ... this will reset that plastic ... your bait will swim straight ... make sure nothing touches the bait as it cools ...

there is some work involved but it will save that gill ... good luck .. ;)

nice fish!

mission fish has a repair glue that is like superglue, but it stays soft when it dries.  im sure there are other options like it available out there.

i've been throwing some swimbaits in a lake i fish in central florida.

i am dragging them above brush in 15 ft of water, so i am on my 3rd mattlures baby bass, and on my 4th mission fish 3:16... :o

i have decreased in numbers when i chunk the swimbait, but my avg size goes way up.

i threw up a little comparative review on my blog of the two swimbaits. http://bigfishoutfitters.blogspot.com/2008/08/2-swimbaits.html

paul, are you throwing those things in stained/muddy water w/ success?  cause i havent tried them much except in the clear water lakes i fish.

fishing user avatarmattm reply :

well, i'm not really the guy to ask swimbait questions to since i've only been throwing them about 2 months and i'm still very much in the learning stages.  to answer though, i have been using them in clear water.  but i see no reason at all they wouldn't work in stained or muddy water, or even at night.  i do believe the primary appeal of these lures is visual, and i have had my best success during the middle of the day (when the sun is high and visibility is good).  others might have had completely different experiences though.  i do think that just like a spinnerbait, a ripple on the water will help your cause with a swimbait in clearer water.

fishing user avatarwarmer reply :

i guess i was thinking of soft swimbaits as being better in clear water...

im starting to a new thread so as not to hijack my mans big bass thread...

cya, and GREAT BASS

I'd be willing to pay 23 bucks to catch an 8 pounder!!!  I've spent WAY more than 23 bucks on other soft plastic baits and haven't caught anything NEAR an 8 pounder.

yeah it was worth it! especially with the 9 lber. too  ;)
