he picked up a fluke jr on a split shot rig. i almost missed the hookset. at first i thought i snagged a rock till my line moved to the right and my drag started screaming. after a nice minute long fight on light spinning gear , i got em. i need to start carrying a measuring tape , but the rod is 15" from the butt cap to the top of the fore grip.
Thats a nice one right there, Sqhertz.
I'm jealous! Oh how badly I want to spend some time up close and personal with one (or more) of those!!!

Don't some of us all. I feel the same way! Nice one by the way and way to go!
thanks guys and gal , lol.
its unlikely but , if any of you are ever down in my area , i wont hesitate to show you my local waters and get you on some peas. i think everyone should get a chance to catch one of these.
x2
Short of making a trip down to the Amazon, everybody should make a trip to South Florida to fish for some Peas. Just a ridiculously fun fish to catch.
Okay guys, I'll be in Miami 10/13---10/17. Where are they? Cough it up.
;D
I'm serious.
If I'm available I'll let you know. I've got some that live behind my house that are usually willing to play.
The single best bait will be live shiners though. It's hard as hell to beat a small shiner for peacocks.

most of the nicer peas are in residential lakes. iirc , the state record was caught in kendall lakes off sw 152 in miami.
here is FWCs peacock brochure.

it may help you out a bit , miler...
I'm jealous! The One fish i want to catch before i die......
9miler..........The fall mullet run is on now, it can be awesome, I'm catching a lot of fish everyday.
I will be down there on Wed. night, I have all Thursday and Saturday free. Friday I am obligated. I don't know the first thing about saltwater fishing, snook. Tarpon eat mullet right? I thought the tarpon came in the spring though...
Do you fish for mullet? That can't be right...
Yes tarpon eat mullet, as does a variety of other fish. People fish them either live or just using the head, I only fish artificial. Mullet are caught using a cast net, they do not hit a sabiki rig, there have been mullet pods down here reported up to a mile long and a 100 yds wide.
Tarpon and snook are off a bit right now, they are non aggressive feeders and there are lots of other fish coming in now so the tarpon and snook are backed off a bit. We have been catching a lot of ladyfish ( poormans tarpon ) 5# is common and they are aeriel acrobats pulling out as much as 30 yds or more of drag, awesome fish to catch if never experienced before. Bluefish, spanish mackerel, and jacks are coming in as well.
I'm not familiar with the Miami area for fishing, I live about 60 miles north, but I do know it's better than where I live. All you need are some spoons and jigs, everything else is just excess baggage. I have mostly been tossing 1/4 oz jigs no more than 10-20 feet offshore, work the jigs and spoons slow, let the waves do the work, don't burn them in.
That is indeed a nice one. Would love to get the chance at one!

actually , alot of the carribean peoples fish for mullet down here. i havnt tried it , but if you get past the bone , apparently its tasty. :-/
People, not just islanders, smoke mullet and say they are delicious.
Well guys, I am all settled in. We are staying with my in-laws in Brickell. Anybody else off of work tomorrow? Let's go fishin'

nice. im off tomorrow but im a bit south of where you are. im in cutler bay (33157). did you bring any tackle?
No tackle with me. It just wasn't feasible to bring it. (all on piece rods) I had to bring golf clubs, 5 week old baby, his stuff, wife etc. It was a mess as it was. I think checked luggage ran us almost $150.
I'll fishing the beach someplace Friday morn, not sure where Brickell is. I do have to be home by noon.
Flat sea wind out of the west makes the fishing bad and it was, only 3 small bluefish. Winds picking from the north tomorrow2-3 chop, should be better fishing.
Brickell is on the mainland, but very near the Rickenbacher Cswy to Key Biscayne. Tomorrow is rough for me guys as I am playing in a Barry University alumni golf tournament in benefit of the mens golf team. I am pretty much wrapped up tomorrow.
Brickell is basically downtown Miami, Snook. Roughly I-95 and 8th. That whole area. Kind of near Vizcaya. It's a heck of a trip from up where you are.

Oh man, 33157. Thats my old zip code when I used to live down south in Perrine. Home sweet home!
