I caught this bass on a Xcalibur xr50 lipless crankbait. Saw it blow up on baitfish on the other side and casted towards that. I didn't hit where I wanted it to go, nowhere even close actually lol. Then I just feel the slam and it was on. Managed to keep her from jumping multiple times. I have caught a bunch of ones this size and a lot bigger, below is probably why.
Then the following day I was fishing same spot but different area and caught this. Not a snag too it took it like a bass would lol.
By far the biggest bluegill that I have ever caught and I don't even fish for bluegill. I live in FL and have only caught 3 bluegill since I have lived in FL. This was my previous biggest (not caught at this spot but caught on a 6" senko back in the summer same thing hooked like a bass) and I thought that was big (and was told by bluegillers that was a monster gill) until I caught the purple one, thing was fat and like holding a frisbee.
Now my question is what is the purple bluegill? People on my Facebook and the guy who I was thinking about making my replica said a Coppernose which resembles some pics I have seen, any help?
Nice Bass ~ Congrats
Sorry, can't help you with the panfish identification other than it looks like a nice one.

no idea on the purple.... good looking fish otherwise!!!
I've caught a fair amount of Bluegill in Florida myself, most of them had hues of purple & black, color variations occur by season and water types. That's what I experienced in a decade fishing/ living there. They are great fighters.. Better sport than I dare say.. FLMB ? Nice pictures! Thanks for sharing.
That is one huge bluegill (purple fish). The males tend to turn that color when the are getting ready to spawn. The colors can really be vibrant as well. Some people also refer to them as knotheads when they get that size as they can get a knot just behind the eyes. Man, I've been trying for 45 years for a bluegill that size. Congrats!
Nice bass but the gill is a real horse.
That's one heck of a bluegill. Congrats
Nice fish, great pic!
Excellent bass too but that's a super nice purple...er, bluegill!

Sweet chunk you got there!!
In Florida, the darker bluegill is a male and the "purple" lighter one is a female. Its a common misconception is that there is a separate species of sunfish known as the coppernose. In actuality, the coppernose is the male Florida strain bluegill.

That is a sweet looking bluegill. Never seen coloration like that before.

I would love to catch a sunny that big....i have some close but not quite that large. Very impressive....and yes, they will hit just about anything even if it can't fit in their mouth
Andrew, those are great pics of the Bass and Bluegill. I'm really digging that XCaibur XR50 in the Longear Sunfish color, they're hard to find, but Bass go nuts for them.
Did you get a scale yet? Weights on those lunkers?
Great bass but that is a monster gill! I wish they got that big more often, big bull gills are a blast on a flyrod and a popping bug.
Awesome fish, congrats
That is a true hybrid bluegill. That must make great forage opportunities for some giant bass!

Holy cow! That bluegill is a BEAST!
Awesome catch there - both of them. And from the looks of it, that is a Coppernose gill. They are a distinct sub-species of bluegill, similar to the way the Florida bass is a subspecies of largemouth (the northern being the other).

Nice job!

Most of those pictures are pure pumpkinseeds or green sunfish, neither of which are hybrids. The fish in his picture is either a very large and uniquely colored bluegill, or a coppernose.
Why do there have to be so many fishery scientists on here?
By "hybrid" bluegill I guess I was just thinking of a private pond I've fished that has hybrid bluegill, and they're huge. So yeah, your bluegill is huge (aka hybrid.)
