Choosing a trolling motor (please read) 2024

fishing user avatarAustinHellickson reply :

In my area a guy is selling a few year old Minn Kota Endura C2 I believe. It is 5 speed 30 thrust. Comes with Cabela's battery and battery box. Asking $150 says he can go to $120. Will be my first motor I have bought and I want to know what you would recommend and if it is a good deal. Any thoughts help. Thank you!

If you buy new you get a warranty. Battery box is $10 and the battery is used and seeing as you have no idea if it was cared for properly, the only item of any value is the trolling motor and as you can see from the link, you can buy a new one for less than his price. Take a gamble and offer $100 for the package.  IMO It isn't worth any more than that

how much would a good battery be if i didn't buy this one?

some look to be $100+

fishing user avatarIndianaOutdoors reply :

A battery could run you $75-130 for wet cell, more if you want an AGM.  I think the point slonezp was making is that you should plan on having to buy a battery even if you get one with the motor.  The battery might run the motor great just to see it run out of water for a few minutes but only last 10 to 20 minutes under load.  Unless that battery is only a couple months old I wouldn't risk it.

when i spoke to him he said it was in good condition. this battery is 2 years old he says... lasts 5hrs on water with a kayak

It's your call man.  Do you trust him?  I think there are better deals out there.

not gonna lie, this is my first motor I have purchased if I do so. I just wonder about buying a battery and battery box... I'd rather buy that one you showed me but i dont wanna spend a fortune on a battery

fishing user avatarAustinHellickson reply :

can you use a car battery for a motor? and what is so special about deep cycle?

fishing user avatarIndianaOutdoors reply :

Nope.  Car batteries are not designed for repeated deep discharge.  You will kill it pretty fast.

do you have a boat? and what kind of battery do you have?

fishing user avatarIndianaOutdoors reply :

I have 2, Walmart brand EverstartMaxx group 31 batteries in my 15' sea nymph they power a 55lb Minn Kota Power drive.  I have had these batteries for 4 or 5 years now.  I keep them in a heated garage on a trickle charger when it starts getting cold out.   I also have an Everstart group 24 I use in my 1836 jet Jon. It powers a Minn Kota endurance C2 55lb.  Iv only had it since this spring.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

Agree....the value of the battery is negligible....maybe $10...the value of the core.

Test the motor.  If it works well, then you have a decision to make.  My experience with transom mounted Minn Kotas is limited.  I bought one (35) used; probably 5 or 6 years ago?  It is still going strong...no problems, whatsoever.  I have had one brand new (55) bought three years ago and after a number of problems died for good late last year.  So, old doesn't mean bad.

==================================

Not that battery.  The everstart deep cycle.

I used WM everstarts for a number of years.  They do fine, but I switched to Interstate and they have been better all-around...longer day of trolling per charge...and no noticeable drop-off over time.

thank you! so you are saying no to everstart deep cycle battery?

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

sorry...no....I was saying 'NO!' to the battery that you linked...

the Everstart is a decent value battery..https://www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart-Marine-Battery-Group-Size-27DC/16795212

.but I now prefer Interstate...cost a little more, but worth it to me

fishing user avatarAustinHellickson reply :

@Choporoz thoughts on buying new motor vs same motor that is used with a battery?

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

my thoughts are that you're being asked to pay $120 for a hundred dollar motor.  If you test the used one and it works well, offer $70 for the motor and battery.  As has been mentioned above, you're almost certainly going to be buying a new battery in the next year...a used one, the condition of which is unknown isn't worth more than maybe $10 or $15 ....to me, at least.

Even though I have my doubts about MK's QC lately, a new battery will come with a warranty and a certain level of peace of mind.  If you're comfortable testing the used one, do that and make an offer.  If you want the warranty that comes with a new one...then go that route

@Choporoz i am looking for batteries and leaning towards just buying a new one, for warranty and i know it should run. so i will be needing to buy a battery.

this one https://www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart-Marine-Battery-Group-Size-27DC/16795212 is out of stock but mentioned above. Everstart has other available  on Walmart that are marine and deep cycle

https://www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart-27DC-Marine-RV-Deep-Cycle-Battery/164242687

i like the very bottom one better so far but what are your thoughts?

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

Internet can make things seem confusing.  It's been a few years since I was at Walmart looking at batteries, but IIRC, there's really only 6 choices there.  All are everstart deep cycle; the only difference is in sizes; 24, 27, 29; and each comes in 'regular or maxx'.

24 is lightest weight; 29 will last longest on a charge.  27 is good balance of weight and power.

And I wouldn't put too much 'stock' in Walmart's 'out of stock' note on the web page....historically, that hasn't been too accurate for me.  Just go into a WM and buy whichever everstart deep cycle battery you want.

All that said, I go back to what I said way above.  I have switched to Interstate and won't go back.  Cost a few bucks more, but they are better (for me.)

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Think about it this way. You have 2 major components in the setup. The motor and the battery. If either one fails you are dead in the water. Just because the battery is 2 years old doesn't mean it's in good condition. If it wasn't cared for properly and charged up after every use, it's lifespan has been compromised. If the cells went low and distilled water was not used to top them off, it's lifespan has been compromised. These are things you don't know and must trust the seller. You could have a load test done on the battery at Auto Zone or Pep Boys to get an idea but it still doesn't represent on the water use.

I didn't look at the above links but Everstart batteries are fine. The smaller the battery the less expensive and the less run time. If you think you're going to be running around on high speed all day going from spot to spot, a group 31 would be a better choice than a group 24. If you are slow and steady on speed 1, then a group 24 should work just fine. The nice thing about the Everstart is Walmarts are everywhere if you run into a problem. Make sure you buy the correct size battery box to match the battery size. Here's a link for a 50 amp circuit breaker which is a good idea to have in the + circuit. It will prevent a fire if something malfunctions with the motor or wires.

okay so, I've done a lot of research on this subject myself (read my other posts) in choosing one, I never condsidered used. As slonezp said, you have no idea how well it was cared for. Battery might be shot. A NEW Endura c2 30 can be had for ~$100 if you look around. I will put a link in for a decent (also around 100$) battery that will work for your purpose. Now your descision whether you want a circuit breaker split line deal or to just buy the battery box. A circuit breaker IS recommended. I heard Minn Kota will void your warranty if you don't use one. I would just recommend to buy the box (can be had for around 50$) so total is 250 but you get warranty. Can be had cheaper if you have electrical skills and can fab up a short wire with ring terminals on each end. But if you like a gamble:rolleyes: go ahead and pick up the used one by all means. Just depends on budget and what you want. A good luck with whatever you choose.

edit: just get the everstart battery from Walmart like people are recommending. I would say go for 29 group but that's just me.

no matter what it's not going to be cheap. Your better off saving your money and getting something that will last. A brand new battery will probably last ~5 years max(depends on usage)

fishing user avatarAustinHellickson reply :

@Largemouth21 thanks for above! so if I bought a battery box non Minn Kota and a circuit breaker should I be fine?

edit: do i need to use both circuit breaker or just a box?

as long as you know how to solder the wire correctly. you will need a short wire with ring terminals to connect the battery to the breaker. Personally I will go with the minn Kota brand box. It is easy to hook up, has a battery meter, is water proof, and has cigarette lighter style charging ports if you have any electronics in your boat.

You NEED a circuit breaker. A box is STRONGLY recommended. Keeps corrosion off terminals. in some states it's a law to have a protective box.  I think you should save up, buy a min Kota box. But if you absolutely want one now. Get a cheap box and breaker. The min Kota box has a built in breaker

ok, thank you!

@Largemouth21 what do you think of this as a cheap alternitave?
