Your Story for Fishing 2008 2024

fishing user avatarBassNub reply :

Tell everyone about your best fishing story this year, or just your fishing experiences this year.

Okay, since I'm the starter I'll go first.

This year the best thing for me is probably when I first experienced my real buzz bait fish. It was just awesome seeing the bait buzz across the water and out of no where there's an explosion on your bait or even sometimes the whole fish come out of the water. Still the best thing about it is that the first fish was a 26 inch northern pike and right through the same area, a 3 1/2 pound largemouth smashes it again. This caused my Booyah buzzbait to bend and my skirt goes flying.

Share your stories. :)

fishing user avatarRed reply :

i caught a 5lber, that was one of my goals.  i caught less fish overall but better quality, also a goal.  but i think the best thing i did was bought and learned to build my own custom fishing rod, thanks to keith and ronnie.  just got two more blanks this past weekend, looking forward to get working on those!!

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I started this year off teaching my youngest son Scott the fine art of fishing a Texas Rig, every outing he has struggled trying to catch more than one. This past Thursday he finally caught a total of 4 and Friday a total of 3 with a personal best of 3 pounds 10 ounces.

The joy would be two fold if daddy could only get his other Calcutta back  ;)

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

I started out just wanting to be able to compete for a complete year without dealing with the numerous health problems that have hindered me the previous years. I have done that. I lead our club with over 123 lbs. I won our club's two day on Lake Fork last weekend with a black buzzbait catching an 8.19 and a 10.51 with a total of 29.11.

fishing user avatarWillzx225 reply :

My favorite story of the year was getting the opportunity to compete as a co-angler in an Elite Series tournament.  It was a great experience and a huge learning experience as well.  I fished the Elite on Clarks Hill and fished with Casey Ashley, Brian Hudgins, and Skeet Reese.  I learned a whole lot from each one of those guys and I also got to meet Glenn and spend some quality time with him.  All in all it was one of the greatest experiences in my life!

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The last week of April I stumbled upon a new "Secret Pond" near my house. This is the focal point of a somewhat isolated public park. In the month of May I caught 43 largemout bass, 38 of which were 5lbs+.

I didn't fish the pond nearly as much in June, but caught 27. These were the best two months of green bass "catching" I have ever had. As a sidelight, most of the fish were caught on jigs, a few on the Cavitron 3/8 oz buzzbait and a couple on topwater. During this period I never threw soft plastics, my strong suit!

fishing user avatarosbornj2 reply :

Great idea for a thread!

Aside from the actual fish caught this year (one of my best years as far as "good" fish of multiple species), probably the best thing to happen was that I was able to reconnect with an old friend.

We fished together quite a bit several years ago, but then he moved, I have a child and am self-employed, etc.  So, we kind of lost touch for a year or two.

But, now he's back in town, and we have been fishing pretty regularly most of the late-summer and so far this fall (much to my wife's chaigrin!)

oh yeah...and not to mention my new pb Northern back in May of 42.25" !

fishing user avatarTin reply :

Best thing of 2008 for me..

Bassmaster Weekend Series tourney on Champlain.. had a 40 mile run in some big waves 4-5 footers in a 19 foot Bass Cat. Go absolutley pounded and beat up. Turned white a few times and speared a couple of waves. Made it to the spot, fished for about 4 hours. Caught a ton of big smallies 3.5.-4.25. And was culling 4 pounders by 10am. Had the same 40 mile run back to the ramp in now 5-6 footers. Stopping every 15-20 minutes to refill the livewells because the plug went missing. Made it back just in time. Weight the fish and I know I had a 4+ average ( 3 fish limit), they come up 9 pounds and I'M ticked. Ask for a re-weigh, they come up 12.74 and I win and get a nice check that paid for all my Weekend Series events.

fishing user avatarCaptain Rhino reply :

I didn't know anything about fishing until I got onto this website and started reading comments and articles. I was still fishing with bobbers and worms up until this summer. I really started getting into fishing, listening to what people were saying on here and their experiences. While fishing a spinnerbait at a local pond with a few friends of mine, I caught a pb largemouth that was about 7 pounds! Since then, I've been hitting different bodies of water, at least twice a week (and catching bass!). Oh, and the bait monkey jerking me around. I'm lovin it!

fishing user avatarJoe Boss reply :

The best fishing story of my year was finally having my son, who turned five, go fishing with me on our first of many father/son fishing trips.

We went to the local 1 acre pond and his first fish was a first for both of us he caught a 9" Carp. Nobody was catching anything at the pond that day so when he pulled it in he got a lot of attention. All the kids and adults around us came over to admire his catch and congratulate him.

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Many great moments for '08.

-I got to meet a few new members, some good ones in the mix that I'm sure will be friends for many years to come

-CAST For Kids has seen a growth spurt that is a direct result of YOU GUYS!  We are now firmly established in the east and are now also placing BR members as hosts in other parts of the country as well.  The people I've met, the places I've seen and the inspiration that has touched me, will probably never be topped in my lifetime.  It's understandable, I work with angels.  Literally.

-RI became VERY strongly represented here on BR.  Biggest little state there ever was!

-Got to be a guest on Lunkerville and BassFeed

-Quit cigarettes but grew a new addiction     WAKE BAITS!!!!! :)

-changed jobs at UPS, now I go in @ 2am and I'm out by 11.  I can fish 7 days/week if I choose to.

-Broke 2 rods catching first 2 wake bait fish.  Very rookie and VERY funny.  Had to be there :)

-Went swimming for my Revo

-Launched LowBudgetHookers.com

-Started making my own wake baits

-Created "The Dirk Files" some funny stuff

Below are links to the 2 full length videos from this yr.  I have 1 more coming.

Kickoff 08

Ghetto Bassin'

and to cap it off, "The Clubhouse" just got even more comfortable.  You folks don't see it but Glenn has gone absolutely nuts with upgrades.  He's been all out to keep this place the best there is on the technical end of it as well as the social.  We are looking to the future and what it may bring.  Knowing Glenn has it covered allows us, as staff, to get creative with suggestions.  This is an environment I thrive in.  Can't wait.

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

Quite a few highlights from this year...

-Lake Guntersville for the Road Trip w/ Alpster and all the other BassResource.com'ers. RiskKid had us over to his house for steaks that are BOMB!! Got to fish with RW, CJ, Masshole, Keri and Bob Lusk....Good times, good times.

-Trip to Vermont to see fiance's family. Discovered they had a little 30 acre jewel in their back yard. 120+ smallmouth in two days, biggest 5 went over 21lb.

- Went to the Chunk to fish with Muddy.  Need I say more?  LOL

- Traveled to RI to see Russ and lend a hand at a CAST event.  Gotta tell you if you have never been to one of these, go for the experience.  If the looks on those kids' faces doesnt move you, I really couldnt tell you what will.

- Trip to the Chesapeake catching bluefish ALL DAY LONG.  Sweet.

Numerous others, tired of typing.   ;D

I caught a total of around 30 bass from late spring all the way to date...Only goal i actually completed was catching a pike, walleye and yellow perch.

fishing user avatarRich K reply :

This is the first year that I have taken fishing seriously and caught more and larger fish than I ever have. Both my PB's (LM and SM) were caught this year. I caught a 30" Northern a couple of weekends ago that is also my PB for that species.

I learned how to use a baitcaster.

I built my own spinnerbaits.

I also managed to catch 14 fish on a buzzbait when I previously had not caught a thing on them. The biggest being just under 5 lbs.

That was a cool story for me. I had been fishing my buzzbait and caught 4 fish and had 8 misses (typical). I felt a strike and started reeling, but it almost felt like a weed accept for the slight tugging. I knew it was a dink. As I am reeling it in through the weeds covering the shoreline, I see a wake chase it. I thought to myself (and maybe even said it out loud), that is a big fish! I quickly released the dink and cast back to the same area where the wake was. Wham! Fish on! That was the 4 lb 13 oz best on the buzzbait. Had my adrenaline pumping!

Fishing has been slow around here for me lately. I think the water temps have fallen into the upper 40's to low 50's around here.

Looking forward to maybe targeting Musky up in Wisconsin Saturday - the plans are not final yet...

The sweetest part of the year for me is finally gaining fishing respect from both my father-in-law and uncle-in-law (experienced bass fishermen). That sounds simple, but everyone in my wife's family knows just how tough that is.

fishing user avatarBassboss reply :

I learn how to use a baitcaster with out getting a backlash ever other cast.

I caught a 3lber on a 6lb test using a popper fly. BTW that was my biggest bass ever on anything under 10lb test.

I caught my PB blue gill, it weight 1 1/2 lbs!

Bought my most expensive lure it was about 20 bucks; fish arrow cover jack.

Not that this has to do with fishing, but I knocked my grades but to a C-average to an A-average.

And I just today got my 9-week exam back and got 100% A+ (70/70)!

Well that pretty much covers it!

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

Hmmm . . . . there wasn't much to speak of really.  I broke my 19 year personal best slump.

I fished for white bass with my daughters, who are 22 and 19, and are not regular anglers.  They caught some fish and had a blast.  This was my favorite trip of the year.

I have had a so so year. I finished 3rd in my club classic. I didn't fish as much as I would have liked but I was surrounded by saltwater for most of the year. One thing I can say is I live in florida and I still have the best months of bass fishing ahead of me. Oh Yeah.

fishing user avatarBrute reply :

I got my first boat this year and have fished more in the last 3 month's than I typically did in an entire year.

I got to spend a lot of time with my brother fishing.

I caught my pb bass of an estimated 5.5 lbs.

I bought my first scale after that bass so I will know better next time.

I brought my wife fishing and watched her catch her first ever bass.

I think the best thing had to be the smile on her face when she caught a 4 lb 11 oz bass ( confirmed with the previously mention scale).

Priceless.

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

I had a terrific year as well, and most of my fishing was here in Texas on many of my favorite lakes. The fish seemed healthy and aggressive all year long which says alot for the management practices on these particular lakes.

Since I only threw jigs and/or soft plastics all year, it has been very enjoyable to say the least.

fishing user avatarMrs. Matstone reply :

My favorite fishing experience this year would have to be fishing topwater for the first time. It only took one time and I was addicted.  ;D Other than that it would be fishing with my hubby and my kids, catching my first muskie and my first walleye.

fishing user avatarmoondog reply :

My favorite fishing trip this year was a weekend with a bunch of kids that spent as much time wading, splashing, throwing rocks and swimming as anything else. They did enjoy catching, cleaning and frying up all of the catfish, brim and whites bass we caught but I'd say the extra curricular fun they had topped it off for them.

Great weekend

fishing user avatarDaniel My Brother reply :

2008 was a great year for me and I need to give a lot of thanks for that to the people on this website. Here are just a few highlights:

I went fishing with the girls and caught a new PB.

Managed to snag a giant gar.

Rediscovered my love of catfish.

Caught 200 hundred white bass in one day.

And even helped dig up a mastodon jaw!

I fished all kinds of new water this year, targeted new species, and made some new fishing buddies in the process. Thank you all for the expertise, passion and humor that make this site my favorite place on the web.

2008 for me?  SUCK

fishing user avatarpaul. reply :

first and foremost, got to have some very fun trips with my youngest including a new pb for her which was my top priority this year.  second storyline would be my introduction to swimbaits this year, learning these baits, and catching some good fish on them.  other than that, i have been just happy and blessed to catch a few nice fish including a new spinning tackle pb, new topwater pb, and new live bait pb.  '08's fishing ain't over yet for me though.  maybe there'll be some more good stuff to come.

fishing user avatarbaboosicbass08 reply :

I'd have to say this year was my best year of fishing, my most memorable experience would have to be July 4th weekend when i went camping with a couple friends, getting up early fishing all morning heading back to the site cook some burgers and dogs, head back to the lake fish all afternoon, head back to the site throw on more burgers and dogs, head back to the lake fish from shore knee deep in the water perfect temperature catching fish from 8pm-2am, heading back to the site cooking smore's getting sleep and repeating the process the next day and the next day and the next day...... I also become very confident in topwater fishing this year as I caught my first topwater fish early on in the year and was able to fish topwater baits confidently at night for the summer, I also caught my first spinner bait fish this year (thanks to a member who i also got to fish with this year, and hopefully get to next year) and I got a little practice in with a baitcaster.

fishing user avatarislandbass reply :

It was a mix for me. Personally it was the worst as in practically non-existent for me. I broke my ankle in two places on back in May and that practically did me in. I was looking forward to learning jigs and shakey heads.

Vicariously however, it was quite good. One outing with my dad and the other with my daughter.

My dad visited from overseas and even with a full fledged cast on my right leg, I took him smallie fishing (in July) because he wanted to go. Then in September, I helped my daughter, a trout catching machine, catch her first bass.

VICARIOUS EXPERIENCE #1 July 2008

This is what I composed to remember the outing:

Finally Gone Bass Fishing with Dad!

Some of you might know that I broke my ankle in late May (double fracture) playing with the kids at the playground (that's the truth) and as a result, fishing for this season is pretty much not going to happen until I heal. Per Doctor's orders, I cannot put any weight on my right ankle lest I want to risk having surgery.

My dad came a long way to see me, and he wanted to do some fishing it possible and I thought to myself, I really shouldn't fish, but on the other side of the coin, I don't get to see my dad often enough because he lives so far away and he really wanted to go fishing, probably more than me!

This past Monday, I gathered up what we needed including a chairs for us to sit on.

It was a blue bird sky day. My gut feeling was saying that prospects were going to probably be slim and fishing tough.

I was hoping to be wrong and it appeared that I would be. Within minutes of rigging him up with the drop shot (6'6 med action rod with cabela's 6# fc line) rig. He gets his first nibble as I am preparing my own set up. He gets my attention and I observe the rod's tip twitch. I said excitedly, Dad, set the hook!

100_1712Large.jpg

Just moments before the first bite.

Just to let you know, my dad is a newbie to fishing. The last time he fished with me was at this spot last year.

He reeled up the slack and pulled back just as a pro does to make a cross the eyes hook set and I thought. Wow! What a hook set! Where in the world did that come from? I didn't teach him that. Well, at least he looked good!

I started laughing but not because he missed the fish. It was such a beautiful hook set, but unfortunately, that type of hook set is not needed when drop shotting. It was probably a decent sized smallie too.

I proceeded to tell him that that I meant for him to just reel up the slack to get tension to the line. He was bummed out but still kept an optimistic outlook for the rest of the day.

I spent most of the time trying to get my first jig fish: both jig and pig and Shakey head, but no luck today. I had followers with the J-n-P (30% of the fishing time), Shakey-head (30%), spoons (5%), lucky craft jerk bait (4%) and homemade inline spinners (30%) but no takers at all despite the adjustments I made in size and lure color.

My poor dad had no luck as the day went by miss after miss.

I switched to my comfort technique the drop shot (1%) and on about the 3rd cast with my dad right next to me I mentioned, Got it, as I reeled the slack in.

100_1715Medium.jpg

It might look like I am putting weight on my right leg but I am not. It's all on the left leg.

I knew it was a small one but being only my second time out this season for bass fishing, I will take it. It is also my first bass this season too.

He jokingly said that I stole his fish and that my unasked help on that hook set was an attempt of sabotage.

I was really hoping and praying he catch at least one fish, but it was not to be.

We fished for just less than three hours, but had to leave to beat the traffic to catch his train.

He went 0 for 8 and I went about 1 for 4, not including the followers.

It was definitely great father and son time, something I cherish deeply. So in addition to taking the kids fishing, if possible, don't forget to take a parent(s) fishing too.

VICARIOUS EXPERIENCE #2

Daughter's First Bass 09-01-08

I am glad to say that I have finally gotten this monkey off of my back and it has been there for a long time. My daughter is my first fishing buddy and she has been a trout catching machine since day one. However, catching a bass until today has been so elusive for her. So after a very long time of trying and trying and trying, her persistence has finally paid off.

We faced a cooling trend and overcast skies after a good period of decent warmth. On the way to the lake she told me that she was not going to leave until she caught a bass.

I set her 6'6 spinning rig with a drop shot set up and I set up mine as well.

The first 30 minutes was not productive for either of us and to be honest I was awaiting a comment along the lines of, Can we go now?

Instead, she says, Papi, we have to move to another spot. There is nothing happening here. I thought I needed to clean my ears because hearing those words was like hearing music. The other neat thing was the degree of determination in her voice and attitude. You could not only see it, but also feel it.

We moved to another spot that has been productive for me in the past. We had to pass our car on the way to that spot so I unloaded unneeded items we were carrying.

Unfortunately, time was running out for fishing because we had other plans. We only had about 20 minutes left. So as I unloaded the unnecessary items, I decided instantly that I was going to give her my complete and undivided attention. I put away one rig and told her that I wasn't going to fish so that we can both focus on getting that first bass.

We were fishing riprap and while she held the rig, I kept my hand on above the rod's fore grip. Then, as she dragged the weight over the rocks, I asked if she could feel the vibrations. She said, Yes, those are rocks.

Shortly after, I felt a nibble but before I could tell her or say anything, she blurts out, A bite! and yanks to set the hook. I thought to myself that maybe she should be teaching me. Goodness gracious that has got to be a good instinct because when I started fishing, it took a long time to figure what was a bite and what was not.

Naturally, that kind of move will just yank the lure away from the fish. I shared with her that unlike a regular hook set that all she had to do was to reel up the line until there was some tension.

We're down to our last five minutes and she is still determined. She encounters a snag and so I grabbed the rod above the fore grip to pop the rod and managed to free it. My fingers were still on the rod when the weight landed and I felt very small tug. I didn't say a thing.

Apparently my daughter did too. She says she has one and starts reeling up the line. Oh the joy to see the line moving and you know they're hooked. I was Iaconelli-ing it loud and proud, fist pumping, and yee-hah-ing it all the way to the bank. Speaking of the bank, folks on the bank of the other side of the canal gave their approval with cheers and applause of their own.

I quickly took photos and she released the cute little bass.

STA74850Large.jpg

Beautifully hooked if I may say so. She did well!

STA74858Large.jpg

First time lipping a bass, readying it for release.

My little girl did it. And she didn't give up. This definitely made my day (despite going home skunked fishing solo in the early morning) and I know it made hers.

Sorry that this is long winded.

Some great posts here guys!!  I see many of you got to spend some quality time with family and there's nothing better than that!

I also got to fish with my brother this yr.  Last time was maybe 10 yrs ago.  This is Brian with his Step son Drew.  Drew is now addicted and is a big help when it comes time for CAST events.  Looking forward to having them on the boat again next year and I also just found out that I have another family member who wants to come wet a line,.....MOM!!  Next yr for sure.

fishing user avatarMobydick reply :

This year was very important for me. I learned more about fishing this year than I can say. I learned to fish the dropshot, jig, and carolina rig. I also bettered my techniques in everything else. I read a lot of articles from bassmaster magazines, books, and this site. I didn't catch as many fish this year, but definetely better quality. I have moved away from the bank this year also, yea, go ahead and laugh, but until this year, I didn't care to fish in water where there was nothing to throw at above the water. Now I spend more time fishing off the bank than on it, and I gotta say, I love it. I learned a lot from you guys on here, or else I wouldn't be fishing like I am now. Scince I became a member on this site, I have learned how to pattern the fish, and be able to adjust to the conditions to catch them. I am now trying to perfect my techniques with the jig and the dropshot. This year I am a senior in high school, and trying to decide what I wanna do when I get out of college. I want to become a professional bass fisherman, which is why I spend a lot of time on here and even more on the water. This year was very important as far as deciding my future, I am learning something new about fishing every day now. Well, time to hit the water!

fishing user avatarKYntucky Warmouth reply :

Personally this year has been a crap shoot for me... only thing that sticks out is a descent sized walleye on a Strike King series 3 gizzard shad

fishing user avatarLong Mike reply :

Wow!  What a great year I had!

I had the great opportunity of meeting the BR guys at Guntersville and fishing with several of them.  If it hadn't have been for Roadwarrior, I could not have made the trip.  he gave up his own bed to accommodate me when I was left high and dry by my the guy who pledged to share my room rental.

I caught my PB on Caney Reservoir in Louisiana while fishing in a snowstorm with my Cajun cronies.

I had the opportunity of rooming and fishing with Ghoti at a neat little private fishing spot in Missouri.

I had the opportunity of meeting Catt, who clued me in on a neat fishing spot on Toledo Bend.

I had the opportunity of meeting, rooming and fishing with Fishfordollars.  What a great teacher he is!

All in all, I didn't catch a lot of fish, but I have learned more than I could have ever hoped for.  One great year!
