Earth Day 2024

fishing user avatarCDMeyer reply :

Today as bass anglers is a very important day, it is the one day that is set aside to preserve the Earth, but what I think people forget is that if we only preserve the Earth on one day there will be no nature, no life, no Earth..... So as bass anglers I ask us to stand up and make everyday Earth's day

God gave us this Earth, lets give more than we take out and make Him proud by showing our conservation on bass

I think President Washington's birthday is much more important than any other designation for April 22.

Amen. Im thankful to live on this earth.

Makes me sad that public sand pits that has big bass, filled with crappie and bluegills. Last year was finally opened to public. It has 7-8 surrounding big clear lakes. Last year was so clean, no trash or nothing. Now today, it filled with cigarette butts, trash, empty chew cans. McDonald cups, worm containers laying around. Sickens me. I try to bring a trash bag and pick up things. I come back and filled again. It ticks me.

The next time you look at a picture of Dwight holding one of those giant smallmouth, take the time to think back to the good old days before the Earth Day movement began.

That's all the reason I need to celebrate this day.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Burning all that gas in order to locate fish and towing your boat to the lake, does seem like it goes against the grain of Earth Day.  Earth day is not only about cleaning up places, planting trees and going green, but conserving our natural resources as well.  Fossil fuel emissions can not be good for our water and air.  It's nice to have it both ways, being able to transport oneself to their recreation and places of employment, that does come at a price we seem willing to pay.  When I see a boat with 3 300 hp outboards, hard to think those people are thinking about conservation, only getting to their location fast.

Me........I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth, we are fairly "green" at my home, but I burn 2 tanks of gas a week, way more driving than I need.

I assume you mean George Washington's proclamation of neutrality on April 22nd, not his birthday?  The original OP thinks that the Earth Day designation is significant, as do others.  That doesn't take anything away from George Washington and his contributions to this country.

I am all for not being foolishly wasteful with resources; over population seems to be getting out of hand and blatant pollution is dumb.

Some scientists believe the Earth is over 4 Billion years old. There is also evidence that man has inhabited the earth for close to 200,000 of them. So for some where in the neighborhood of 3,999,800,000 years, the planet did just fine with out us.

Man, as a species, has a lot of nerve thinking that he can actually ruin a planet.

Looking back at supposed history will show that when Mother earth thinks it's time or when she gets tired of human being on her surface, she will shake us off like a head cold.  And there will be nothing we can do about it.

Another ice age, or perhaps a rash of hurricanes, tornados, earth quakes, flash floods, forest fires, mud slides and tidal wakes ought a do it. Or is the case of the deep south - an inch and a half of snow.

I'm not predicting anything or a proponent of doom & gloom.  Simply providing a little perspective.

I've read quite a bit about the Gaia Theory and the idea that the Earth is a living organism is quite intriguing.  That this world could change to the point that mankind couldn't live on it's surface isn't out of the realm of possibility when you consider that this theory could make sense.

However, Earth Day was and should be more about human's keeping the planet's various biospheres save for human consumption.  Man made pollution of the air, water, and soil was getting to the point where it was proving fatal to humans.

While we may never be able to prove (or need to prove) that the burning of fossil fuels causes the planet to warm, it was fairly obvious that smog filled cities weren't conducive to healthy breathing.  Using waterways as a convenient place to dispose of all kinds of human waste didn't improve the quality of our finite source of clean drinking water.  Digging a hole in the ground to bury our waste doesn't work if what we bury can come back to haunt us in such places as the Love Canal neighborhood.

Mankind may not be able save the planet, but it is in our power to keep us from committing suicide.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I totally agree with Lund Explorer.  Growing up in a major industrial city I remember smog well, we don't hear near as much about here in the U.S. anymore.  We have done something about the smog issue, dealing with other issues can and will be done as well.  I'm hitching my wagon to the 97% of the scientific community that feels man has made a negative major impact on the environment.

fishing user avatarLund Explorer reply :

Sorry, but that's incorrect.  This planet has gone through many cycles of both warming and cooling in the past, and will do so in the future.

Consider the fact that when the Vikings left a place called Iceland, they discovered and settled in their new home they named Greenland.  For everyone I know, we all learned in school that Greenland was an extremely cold ice bound island.  So why did they name it that?  Did you know that archeologists have discovered that the place used to support crops grown in more temperate climates today, or that the oldest graves discovered there are buried much deeper than later ones.  Obviously, the place was much warmer many centuries ago.

But that was not, and is not what Earth Day should be about.  There's no need to bring in a divisive politically driven phrase into the discussion.  It should be a celebration that the people of this country decided to choose the quality of life over the quality of the wallet.  That the people of this country saw what could happen if we allowed pollution to go along unchecked.  The harm that was being done to this country's natural resources were taking away from that quality of life.  We'll never get back to where we were when we first settled on these shores, and it would be foolish to think we could.  But it is worth the effort to know that if we aren't careful, we can poison ourselves right out of existence.

Curious as how you come to this opinion.

Let's try and put things in a little perspective.

Your next door neighbor, who has never held a fishing rod, sees an episode of Roland Martin Fishing lake O, catching a fish a cast. He now is an expert fisherman, hasn't done it but knows what to do. Later that evening your fishing club as a Q & A with a touring pro, who's advice would you take?

We have columnists, talk show hosts who write and discuss a different topic daily, none of them really have an advanced education in science.  They have not had the opportunity to go into real depth.  On the other hand nearly the entire scientific disagrees with the people that have no background in science.  These scientists have studied this topic their entire lives, written and published papers, this is all they do.  I personally would tell my expert fishing neighbor who has never even seen a lake to go jump in it.  By the same token why would I pay attention a non expert in science when pros are talking.

Polar caps and glaciers have shrunk, oceans are rising.  One thing I know for sure, more heat melts ice quicker. Just because we had a lot of snow and low temperatures in our corner of the world, other places experienced something else.  This past January during the Australian tennis open, the normal average temperature is around 70 degrees, the open was played in 100 degree weather, broke records.

I am going to assume you mean that man has not induced global warming, and I agree with that, but the earth is getting warmer, but it's just a cycle the planet goes thru, naturally.

The impact man has on the earths environment is debatable, so let the scientist debate it.

What isn't debatable is the impact volcanic eruptions have on our planet and nothing we can do about that.

Weather cycles are changed from these eruptions and we are going through a now as a result of several major events the past decade.

We should all be good stewards of our local environment, that is something we can do.

LE, if you haven't noticed, FNC is stomping the crap out of your lefty news outlets in the ratings! Without a doubt, Faux News has a viewership that is extremely committed, or perhaps should be.

I wonder what Dr. Keith Ablow would say about that!
