What to do in this heatwave... 2024

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

So until at least next Friday according to the forecast, we have a pretty rough heatwave. Today, I packed up the car and drove 2.5 hours to Cabela's, got a couple lures and some camping gear (going in two weeks), so that kept us in the AC all day. My car was showing a temperature of 97 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter.

Normally, I'd just fish mornings and/or evenings, but currently I am coming off my biweekly chemo treatment and I can't even drink cold water (maybe I will be able to tomorrow, but I'm not banking on it), so it's very hard to keep hydrated which puts me at risk of heat stroke.

EDIT: Sorry guys, I realize that I put this in the wrong forum.

can you wet down in the places you are fishing?

otherwise, I would suggest you stay inside with the AC on.

I say this considering you are getting chemo treatment.

I do wish you good luck with that.

Best of luck with the Chemo

I haven't lugged my AC down from the attic, and at this point I am not going up there to get it anytime soon, it's an unvented attic that is probably over 100 by now. Because of all the shade on my hill, my house is usually cooler than everywhere else.

Every single thing that could go wrong this treatment has. If the heatwave could have held off until next week when I'm basically 100% functional again, it wouldn't be so bad. To add to it, my fridge just died and all the food in it just went bad.

This is the first weekend I haven't fished since ice out. Heat index of 105+ both days. The humidity is unbearable. I went outside yesterday morning to wash and wax the new truck at 5:30 and it was 80* with 90% humidity. I didn't do it. It was 95* by 9:30am. Ended up driving to WeatherTech and bought a bed and tailgate liner. Got home and installed them. Crazy how fast black rubber gets hot. My knees and hands were cursing at me. Went out at 5:30 this morning it was 80* again but 70% Rh. Truck was washed and waxed by 8:30am. Took a shower and sat on the couch the rest of the day. I can deal with heat, but 95* ambient and 90% humidity is miserable.

Ouch! Yesterday and today hit 97 and that's bad enough. I missed last weekend too because of the rain. I thought about trying Saturday, but it was supposed to be violent thunderstorms. The plan was to go rent a canoe at a Vermont State Park, a little bit of a drive until they said likely afternoon thunderstorms, but we didn't get anything until after I went to bed and early in the morning.

Turns out I had a friend's adoption party to go to today and then went swimming, so that kept me busy today. At least I didn't stay home and do nothing, I'd go insane.

Ya know what......Sometimes it's just too d**n hot to fish.  When I was guiding, I had no choice but now I do and it's just not worth raking myself over the coals to get out and fish when it's this oppressive.  I took Saturday and washed and waxed the boat in the early morning and a little later because my boat sits in the shade.  Did some honey-do's around the outside of the house but once that flaming ball got overhead, I went indoors and called it good.  There's no shame in my game!!

Like you guys I'm in right in the middle of this heat wave with you.

Rains have the river conditions not to my liking or I'd be chasing some Smallies around. Been putting my efforts in up on the lake. Not doing to bad for water conditions on there. Catching bass on drop offs with Gizzard Shad patterns.

I'm too stupid to stay home and suck up the AC. But I'm out from 5:00am to 8:30 ish. If I can get alittle topwater, worm and Crankbait fishing in I'm ok with it. I'll be at the ramp at 4:30 tomorrow morning.

Well....still fishing the Tues/Thursday 5-9ers.......very warm....sweat just pours off ya.  Even golf twice a week.  Can hardly wear sunglasses even.  Do I still enjoy.....yes....catching some fish....yes.  Do I pour in the fluids....you bet.  Not a good sit at the TV kinda of person.  Like moving around....down the road I know I'll have to...not anxious to get there.

fishing user avatarKoz reply :

The heat some of you are experiencing now is what it's like every summer in my neck of the woods. Because of the extreme humidity in the mornings I usually fish in the early evening. It's still hot, but after the higher heat during the day and the slight drop in humidity it feels bearable outside.

I used to bike to my bank fishing locations but now I drive so I can keep a fully stocked cooler full of water nearby. Sometimes I'll brave the heat during the day, but as I get older that's less and less frequent.

I have been looking at Google Earth this summer and have mapped out some new lagoons that offer some shady areas to set up and fish. I'm the type that usually covers a lot of ground when I fish, but in this case I may try to bring a chair and see if I can stay in one place in the shade and fish.

I woke up at 6am looked at the temp, 82 degrees.  I just went back to sleep.  It's supposed to be 95 today with a heat index of 110.  I think I will be hunting down some unneeded tackle in an air conditioned store or reading a book.

I despise the extreme heat as much as I do winter. I've thought about moving south, figuring I'd get a longer fishing season but then I have to consider what I would lose from sitting in the AC in the summer too.

And sometimes it's too d**n hot to catch fish. LOL. I went this morning and caught a dink bass and two crappies (I was bass fishing) after paddling all over a 35 acre reservoir. I had to resort to casting a Cordell Spot toward the deepest areas, letting it sink to the bottom and reeling as slowly as possible to catch those. But I've been on lockdown because my wife's 90 yr old dad has been with us for 3 1/2 weeks and he's a full-time job. 1 1/2 more weeks to go.

fishing user avatarTnRiver46 reply :

One of my greater skills (that of course requires minimal brain power) is being able to work and fish out in the extreme heat. It only comes in useful a couple weeks out of the year but it’s necessary! I would rather put up with sweating through my clothes for a few months than having to drill holes in the water for a few months

fishing user avatarLionHeart reply :

If you're not able to hydrate, don't risk.

I have seen many people go down because of heat injury and It's never pretty.  Don't risk it man.  Sharpen your hooks, rearrange tackle, clean reels, but don't put yourself in a heat wave if you can't hydrate.

fishing user avatarLog Catcher reply :

I haven't been fishing for almost 3 weeks. I don't handle extreme heat well anymore. Between the heat and loads of rain and high muddy water I gave up. May get to go next week as it is supposed to be cooler and little chance of rain.

It was 114 here yesterday! Not sure what the temp was at the lake but I'd imagine it was similar as it's just a couple of miles away. My hate for the heat heavily outways my lust for fishing. With the high water level and the extreme heat my local lake is most likely a zoo anyways. Fishing from a kayak and dealing with the heat and others whom are lost in their own little world doing circles around the lake is too risky currently. I'm debating on going on my next day off but the current forecast is 97 with isolated thunderstorms which doesn't sound too enticing too me. I hate the summer!

I believe that first statement might indicate a lapse in memory.    The older I get the better I was!

Seriously, this heat is no joke.  In MS, we got heat, humidity,  Alligators, water moccasins,  the West Nile virus and  Encephalitis virus laden mosquitoes (that's why we're crazy) Brain eating Amoeba in the lake if you get the water up your nose, jet skiers and Deliverance type rednecks.  But those guys in Louisiana really have wrose heat, more reptiles, etc. (Not trying to one up Catt). But we'll both be fishing hard all winter, just about!

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Heat doesn't really bother me as long as I have water.  When I start running low on water I go home.  With this heat I am taking 2 water jugs with me instead of my usual one.

fishing user avatarCrankFate reply :

Fish through it. Everyone says early morning or the evening is best. I am too much of a die hard to just leave when it starts getting too hot or too dark. All of the biggest bass I ever caught were sometime about an hour after it got too hot too fish. My guess is that the heat makes the bait sluggish but the bigger bass take longer to slow down and they start to attack just after all the bait slows down from the heat.

fishing user avatarBucky205 reply :

It is amazing the difference wetting down makes.  I wear the long sleeve performance fishing shirts.  When wet and in contact with your skin the evaporation of the water really helps cool you off.

Normally, I would fish through it with a few swimming breaks, but chemo makes it so I can't drink cold water, and even room temperature water is too cold for the first 2-3 days.

But yeah I did get my PB when I rented a rowboat and in the morning, I was throwing a spinnerbait and was going to switch to soft plastics at lunchtime. Right before lunch as it was warming up, I got my PB which was a little bit later than you'd think you'd get them to chase, so maybe that big one didn't slow down yet like you said.

Sorry to hear about the chemo. It’s good you’re still out there fishing. I don’t catch a lot of bass compared to other people. But I tend to get the bigger ones. I think it’s because I’m stil throwing cast after cast after cast waiting to get a big one after everyone else who hit the water at sunrise packs it up. Or staying after the sun goes down throwing cast after cast after cast waiting to get a big one long after everyone leaves saying they don’t bite in the dark.

i don’t know what it is with this cancer, seems like more people are getting it including my wife (she’s ok now) and a friend who got it in his early 30’s (he’s also ok now over 10 years later). Chemo is tough, but I was talking to a guy who has stage 4 and is doing OK nearly 10 years after diagnosis.

This is my second year of really bass fishing. I learned a ton last year, and finally got a big one at the end of the year. This year, I got a big one right off the bat and haven't gotten completely skunked nearly as often as last year, however lately it's been getting harder to catch them from the shore. I often fish with my kids, and if dinner allows we will fish past sundown although fishing time for us this year has been 10-8. Given the heatwave, chemo etc. I guess that's not too bad.

I'm also camping next week, and I hope the lingering effects of the treatment don't hang around as long -- primarily the cold sensitivity. I am hoping the heatwave caused the cold sensitivity to be exaggerated -- the first treatment had me drinking cold water by Saturday, and this one I wasn't even able to drink room temperature water until Monday!

At the very least, I'm sure I'll rent a canoe for most of the week so I hope I'll get a few good ones. I don't know a lot about the lake, but I've reviewed the maps and I know it's very clear water with little cover so I plan on doing a lot of swimbaits, senkos and primarily drop shots -- one of the reasons I upgraded my finesse rig was for lakes like this.

I was in the emergency room with a sharp stabbing pain in my right side in the area of my appendix on Friday -- a very similar pain that brought me to the ER to learn I had a massive, cancerous tumor growing in my colon back in May, not muscle pain or anything like that. The CT showed nothing. I have read on the internet that many people complain about random pains on 5-FU, but it's not listed as an official side effect so I will have to talk to my doctor about this one.

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

When I had clients on my boat that were not used to the heat I kept them hydrated and I carried a few of those synthetic chamois called the Absorber.  Dip them in the cooler water or the lake and drape them across your neck and it is magical how much cooler you will get.  They saved many a trip.

fishing user avatarCavalry Scout reply :

With the Chemo, stay inside and get better, the fish will be there when your back to 100%  Here in South Ga, mid 90's is the norm. Go early/late, drink plenty of water.  We have had it pretty good so far this summer, mid 90's, low 100's with the heat index, not bad for down here!  Get better and see you on the water!

They prescribed me zofran, but I haven't needed it. On the treatment I am on, people largely do not get sick or lose their hair, and the bad taste and most of the side effects for that matter are usually temporary.

Right now I'm really praying by Monday morning I am side effect free so I can have a happy week of camping next week -- and two weeks after as well.

At least the heat in the foreseeable future is below 90 degrees. Next week ranges from 81-89, where the 89 degree day is a Friday over a week after my treatment, so I should be able to chug water by then.
