What are your favorite terms to describe a bite? Looking for some new ones here are some of mine
that fish "demolished" my jig
swiped-
-destroyed
-crushed
-smashed
"smoked"
"whacked"
"hit"
"Inhaled"
"tanked"
he just "nailed" it.
Good hit? CRUSHED.
Sneaky hit? Telegraphed.
He hammered it!
Took it. Smoked it. Ran away.
Hammer it
Slack lined
Killed it
In english- choked it, ate it, smoked it
In spanish, la hiso mierda, ya pico, se la trago
Pounded, smacked it, slapped it, slammed it, and my favorite for fishing topwater - Steamrolled it
"Destroyed it"
"crushed it"
"swiped at it" ~ for a missed topwater hit
my dad would say he "swallered it" (swallowed)
"Took him for a walk"
(when fishing a worm or jig and you lift on the rod a few extra times as it swims to make sure it is on prior to setting the hook).
its not exactly a term of endearment as you should have set the hook already...but we have all done it!
For me a bite is a "hit" 90% of the time, if it's an aggressive bite I'll use "crushed it".
I only use hit. For some reason, most of the other terms annoy me. I think it because I watch too much fishing on TV/youtube.
The most famous saying for a strike is "hook up", covers all fishing situations.
I'm bit
I'm on
big fish
get the net
All the above in that order.
Tom
inhaled it! --- when fishing alone
Nom Nom time! --- when fishing with the kids
"Crushed it"!
We always say smoked it on a hard bite.
Choked it
Hit, fish on, slammed it if the bite is aggressive.
"Hammered it" or "Hit it like a freight train" for moving baits or when a big channel catfish grabs your lure. A much more subtle "There he is" for bottom bouncing baits.
I think this will be the new one to catch on among us: Avocadoed it!
My reactions seem to be gender specific ~ I'll often go with either . . . .
"She Choked it" or "He Hammered it".
I'll also openly admit that I can never determine gender by virtue of just the strike.
Once it's in the net - I don't actually care.

That's sexist...
I usually say something along the lines of, "Hey, it IS a fish". If I say anything at all. I'm usually too afraid I'll jinx it.
"She nibbled my cricket!"

No way ~ I'm an equal opportunity angler.
It's not like I'm only throwing a pink Rat-L-Trap.

world record!
Slammered
Had a good hit.
When fishing with people it's usually a quick "Fish!," "Got one!" or "There we go!"
By myself it's usually just a smile when hooked and a quick "woot!" when they are landed.
Favorite ones are:
"Crushed" for those hard strikes. As in: "I thought it was a 10# the way that little guy crushed my jig"
"Choked" or "swallowed" for the fish that are hooked deep. As in: "Man, it really choked on that swim bit"
"Buggered" for when they hook themselves funny. As in: "Awe man, he buggered himself on those trebles" or "he buggered himself coming through the slop"
"Doubled!" for when me or my friend hooks up when the other is already got one. As in: "Wooo! Doubled! he crushed it in the same spot as yours!"
"Suck it, Gerry" for when my friend Gerry says I'm crazy for fishing a spot or a specific lure. As in: him "You'll never get a fish in that current" <hook up> Me "Suck it, Gerry"
"There it is"
"Here we go"
And for some reason to many times this year it's been
"d**n it"
My tournament partners favorite is
"That had to be a bream"
Smashed
Slammed
Nailed
Choked
Hammered
I instinctively ALWAYS say "There we go." when setting the hook on a fish. I don't even know I'm saying it half the time. I'm also guilty of saying "good one" a lot and then reeling in a 1lb fish.
Choked it
Killed it
Inhaled it
Crushed it
Just bit it and took off
Some unusual terms I have sometimes used:
She Slammed it!
She's just messen with it!
Pounded the bait!
It was a pig fest!
Its a dink fest!
A wolf pack bite!
She Ate It!!!
Whooped it!
Anialated it!
