"parting Shot" 2024

fishing user avatar5 Dollar Fishing Game reply :

The very last page of Bassmaster magazine is always "the parting shot" which is an interesting picture that usually has a nice caption covering two pages like a centerfold. This newest issue July/August shows a wake boarder almost showering Keith Combs with water. Guy comes so close to him and the camera got the shot right near him. He stayed cool and collective. What would you all have done?

fishing user avatar5 Dollar Fishing Game reply :

Here's the picture.

Carolina Rig to the chest..lol It happens every weekend at my lake, not that close but it does get crazy. I try to ignore it and keep fishing.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Showering with water....notice the telephoto lens focal plane, the wake boarder isn't that close.

We all must share the water, it's easy to say now, 20 years ago would have run them down and had a heated discussion.

Going by what the caption said. Regardless that was too close. Yeah we should all share the water, but why would you take a speeding boat towing a person on a board that close to a stationary bass fisherman.

At our local lake those boarders stay several dozen yards away. This guy is way to close.

fishing user avatar5 Dollar Fishing Game reply :

This was during an elite series event also. You'd think people would be more cautious.

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

On a hot summer day, I'd almost welcome the shower but not the disturbance.  Many of the lakes I fish are small and overcrowded, not just on the week-end either.  I have two choices; night fish, or accept the fact that I'm not the only one out there to enjoy myself. Unless I'm aware that someone is intentionally attempting to disrupt my enjoyment, I won't say or do anything. If they are, then I feel that disrupting theirs is fair.

A quick, short run to another spot is in order and because the lake is so crowded, I just have to run fairly close to said disrupter. (I know there is no such word, but it sounds good......I think)

fishing user avatar5 Dollar Fishing Game reply :

Sounds good to me papa!!!

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Swindle was DQ'd for speeding close to stationary competitors boats during a tournament on Lay lake.

Not everyone obeys the rules.

I two oz tungsten to the boat or skier may make them think twice about doing it again...

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Nothing.

Done nothing.

Just kept fishing and ignore the jacka$$.

Hope he has fun and moves on or I will move on, as I have done countless times.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

Wanting to do and actually doing are 2 different things. Just ignore him; all he's trying to do is get your goat. Take the high road. And if you happen to meet at the ramp, well.....

On another note; you used to be able to download that pic and the one on the first page from BassMaster website as a desktop background. I can't find where you can anymore. Anyone know if we still can?

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I would ignore them . If it happened again and I think they are deliberately messing with me   I would let them know its not acceptable just by staring  .I fish in a popular skiing area and know there will be lots of skiers around.  I think it usually helps the fishing . Bass are use to the commotion and the activity camouflages my boats presence .

fishing user avatarNice_Bass reply :

It really would not have bothered me.  Only thing that actually bothers me on the water now are jackasses that have paid for tourney jerseys with two powerpoles and all the rest of the tourney gear that try to fish where I am fishing because they have $25 per person on the line in their tx.

fishing user avatarstkbassn reply :

It never surprises me in any situation, anywhere these days that people have no regard for others, respect, or upbringing. I see it at work, on the road, out with friends, at the grocery store, the mall, and definitely on the lake. Yes, I would've ignored the jerk and done nothing but I would have been raising hell to myself about what I would love to happen to him. I had a guy on a seadoo pass me and then cut right in front of my boat a couple years ago and he was grinning. The things I wanted to do to him are unmentionable here but I did nothing.  If you fish during the day in summer time you're just inviting frustration. Of course I know pro's don't have a choice. So unless it's raining and ugly during the day  I don't go in the summer. Rainy days are my favorite kind of days! All of the wake boarders, seadoo's, jet skiers, pontoon boats, cigar boats , pleasure boaters, and all of the idiots that run those things are at the house crying and I'm out fishing in relative peace . otherwise, I like to get on the water around 7:30 or 8 in the evening and fish til 5....can't beat that in the summer!

I'm with you. Tourney anglers stopping to fish my marker buoys really upsets me .

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

The market buoy pattern is often stronger than following the bent rod pattern.

Anyway, I never understood why other boaters would try to get close to fisherman - they have lines that tear up prop seals and hooks that tear up skiers in the water around. Seems pretty stupid to me.

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

Happens all the time on the waters I fish. As long as I don't actually "get sprayed" you just shake your head and fish on. It's always something now days. Pontoon boaters cutting across your casted lines while they smile and wave "Hi" because they have no clue what they just did. Speed boaters cutting you to the inside of points you're fishing instead of going around you. Wakeboats rolling by within 50 feet of you and sending you on a roller coaster ride, hoping you don't take water over the bow or stern. Tourney guys moving in on you or cutting you off when you're just halfway down the bank you have been fishing for the past 30 minutes. Other regular fishermen pulling up on you and dropping anchor next to you before you even get the fish they saw you catch released and back into the lake. It's endless...

Yup, part of the game. Just have to deal with it and keep fishing. It's frustrating, agreed, but people that get really fired up about it need to relax. That's like going to a public pool and getting ticked because you got splashed.

Haven't you learned the secret to using marker buoys?

Throw out a couple of big old gaudy looking buoys 100 yards from where you want to fish, and use a small pill bottle to mark the hot spot.

fishing user avatarLund Explorer reply :

By the way, Michigan already has put laws into effect to stop such idiots from buzzing anglers.

And yes, it does work.

So then what happens? Seems as though it would turn into a bunch of he said she said unless the DNR observed it.

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Just remember that they have a right to the water and are just out having fun like we are. I'm sure they get ticked when a boat is sitting in their favorite cove or swimming hole.

While Hunting and Fishing Boats Are supposed To Be Given A wide birth, many people are ignorant of it and that's not a reason to have a heated argument or ruin your mood.

fishing user avatarC0lt reply :

You guys wouldn't belive the amount of times my buddy and I have had wake larders come withing 20 yards of us near the boat launch of the lake we fish with a 12 ft flat bottom Jon boat. It's absoloutly absurd. They have an 8.5 square mile lake to wake board yet they choose to buzz by and throw around a johnboat with their wake in a low wake zone. Unbelievable.

Actually this whole thread contradicts that. lol. WE ALL BELIEVE IT AND LIVE IT!  :laugh5:

Yep. I am confident in my ability to defend myself and property, but there is nothing good that can come from any interaction with an idiot. I may wave in the fashion A-Jay mentioned or yell friendly suggestions of where else he can go, but ignoring is the best option.

fishing user avatarwhitwolf reply :

From the middle of May until after Labor Day I alleviate this problem by fishing at night. :)

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I used to get bent about it, but.... They have every right to be there too, it is public water. Unless they are going out of the way to purposely screw with me, I just curse under my breath and keep fishing. It doesn't seem to hurt the fishing anyways, and on some days it actually improves it. Now a days, I get more ticked off at other idiot bass fishermen who think because I am not rocking a $70k, 70mph rig, they can just ignore me and cut me off, or come right in on me.....I will say, that every moron that's done it, has done it once and never again for reasons I am not going to elaborate on....because sometimes I do things that make ME the jack off.

Plenty of news stories involving either MI-DNR or County Marine Patrols responding, and tickets issued.  A combination of too many complaints and too many accidents involving high speed boats has the law enforcement community taking a proactive part.  It's far easier to make the call and leave it to the professionals to deal with the idiots.

fishing user avatarfrogflogger reply :

water skiers any pleasure boaters don't bother me unless a collision is imminent - I hold us  bass fisherman to a higher standard of behavior.

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

Turn around and throw a spinnerbait in his wake!

When he comes back around Thank him..

fishing user avatarMFBAB reply :

I was trolling for crappie at Sardis a few years ago and had a ski flea buzzing all around me and waking me.

I don't think the noise hurts the fishing any, but the wake is really obnoxious while trolling.

Fast forward a few hours later, I'm finishing up my limit further up the lake and I hear some voices in the distance. As I get closer, I realize it's the same idiots from before.

They are now out of gas and in need of a tow.

I just kept fishing as I closed the distance, about a mile, until I got my last fish.

Then I towed the dipsh*t in about 7 miles and just asked him to return the favor to someone in the future.

You can't fix stupid, but I may need help on the water myself one day and it was the right thing to do.

I would have reminded myself of the time G-Man got DQd for buzzing full-plane past Edwin Evers and Evers said very calmly to the cameraman in his boat "He shouldn'ta done that." Seriously, it likely made no difference whatsoever to the fish but probably bothered the fisherman to no end. I've been there. I've been at an offshore spot when two boats split me at full speed. It's why I stopped fishing the big local hydro lake.

But some of the boats that do that are bassboats and we all know that.

This reminds me of a story from my childhood. It was a Friday afternoon. My dad, a friend of his and I were fishing along a bank as we came up on an old fence row that ran out into the water. It was a place in our normal rotation. There was a guy in a bassboat sitting there who was packing up. He told us in no uncertain terms not to fish that spot because he had a tourney the next day and that was his ace in the hole for a limit. We cleaned it dry. We came back the next morning but there were no fish and no fisherman. If he had asked instead of told us I'm sure we wouldn't have fished there. At the very least we wouldn't have spent an hour there.

fishing user avatarCatch 22 reply :

The traffic is one main reason I enjoy winter fishing so much more.

I used to try to warn boaters about sand bars they were going to hit. When they get stuck on them ,I start my engine and leave the area. Average cost for Towboat for them is about $300.

The exception is if I see kids onboard that could get hurt if they ground.

A guy I worked with once said "don`t fight with idiots, theres just to many of them"
