Where can I move? 2024

fishing user avatarMN Bass Man reply :

So, I just found out my area has a winter storm watch this weekend.  Up to 6 inches of snow.  I am sick of this state.  If you guys could pick the ideal place to live with respect to fishing year round, where would it be?

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

I live in so.cali, If I had to move it'd Texas. I know there are other states that have good fishin, but I hate the Cold..lol

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

Believe me, I'm considering it when I'm done with school.  What would you consider the best part of the state for bass fishing?  I've considered Jacksonville, because of the Mayo Clinic.  I live in Rochester, home of Mayo.

fishing user avatarDock Master reply :

I would pick NC.  Even though it snows down here a little bit I think the weather would present some pretty good scenarios to you to try and figure out, because we can have 110 degree summers and 10 degree winters.  Also we have a lot of different species from SM to LM even walleye. But thats just my opinion.

fishing user avatarBassnMan Mike reply :

I live in CA but if I was to move it would either be to AZ or TX

fishing user avatardone reply :

Depends what you do for a living. You can get good fishing year round anywhere south.

In the Charlotte area or Triad, we have a lot of decent jobs in some markets, lots of awesome fishing right here, then we are close to some clutch spots in SC, GA, TN, and such. We got bass fishing in the lakes, trout fishing in the mountains, and deep sea at the coast.

We actually have seasons, but winter is short and our lakes do not freeze.

fishing user avatarMN Bass Man reply :

I'm currently getting a B.S. in business administration, and considering an MBA as soon as I'm done.  So I should be able to find something almost anywhere.  Bt I am so sick of cold and snow that I can't stand it anymore.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I would say anywhere around the Kissimmee area would be ideal!

fishing user avatardonbeatya reply :

thats easy SO. CAL OR CENTRAL TEXAS but there youve got lots of storms so id have to say SO. CAL

fishing user avatarBassn Blvd reply :

I live in S. Florida but would rather live in the area of the Stick Marsh, which I plan on doing as soon as I retire.  Not only would you have the Stick Mars but you're not far from St. Johns river.

fishing user avatarDawsonH reply :

Texas is where its at. There are ponds, creeks, rivers, big lakes, small lakes, LAKE FORK, the coast is within a days drive or less of all the major cities and we don't have California's gas prices or emissions control standards. We have a bumper stick that says I wasn't born here but I got here as soon as a could.  ;)

fishing user avatarKevO reply :

I live in TN and I love it.  I can fish all year long.  The water doesn't freeze in the winter and you can catch some big fish that time of the year.

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

I'd just flip a coin......Heads = California / Tails = Texas.

fishing user avatarfourbizz reply :

Screw California.

I think most people's idea of the fishing out here is soooooo over inflated.

I want to move BAD.

For bass fishing, I would go to Texas, but I dont think bass fishing is even a consideration for my next move. I'm thinking of going back to Colorado, but a completely different part of the state from where I grew up.

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

Alabama or North Carolina for me.  They still have four seasons, some hills, and a little snow, but you could still fish 300 days out of the year.

Both have a coast line and that would just be a bonus to me.

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

north east or south central florida. either the st. johns, orange, stickmarsh, and harris chain or okeechobee, istapoga, kissimmee chain, gator chain and so many more florida is the best.

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

There are states besides Texas?

fishing user avatarCaptain Obvious reply :

"There are states besides Texas?"

Right, but the fishing is so darn good down here that we sometimes forget about you guys up there ;D

I vote TEXAS

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Detroit?

Just kidding.

Florida.

Go for Florida.

Lots of bugs and old people, but the fishing is great.  ;)

Oh yeah you would do well in RTP or Charlotte. The coolest thing I like about NC is the varied climate. You have the mountains. If for some reason you want snow, it is up there in the winter, you can get some skiiing in. It is about 1.5 -2 hours from Gastonia. I can get to the coast in 3 hours. Within a decent drive you got lakes all across the Catawba river chain. You got those mountain streams. You got a ton of stuff out in east NC. Then SC is full of productive lakes.

Being originally from Buffalo, NY I can totally relate to the snow issue. I have never regretted moving south,

fishing user avatardrmnbig reply :

Once my wife and I finish with college it's out full intention to move to middle TN.  After spending several vacations down there I'm in love with it.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

TEXAS  ;)

fishing user avatarsnapshotmd reply :

When I retire, I'm moving to TN.  My FIL has a lake house in TN and the bass fishing is SUPERB!!!

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

If you like crappy winters, horrible traffic congestion, and crooked politics (oops, can't say that), come to Chicago. Southern Illinois is nice and has some great fishing. Missouri good also. My daughter just moved to Lubbock, Texas (Hi Brent) and loves it. Texas would be my choice. Like living in your own country. Florida would be next.

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

Lots of good choices out there... depends on what kind(s) of fishing you want to do. I like Central Texas... I have LM, SM spots, hybrids and more with in 10 minutes of the house. The coast is only a 4 hour drive, fork and the east texas lakes are day trippable... either direction I can go flyfish for rainbows, and I can go north for a day trip for browns. We even have landlocked stripers and redfish within an hour's drive.

and in Dec. & Jan. we fish powerplant lakes... not many places where you get to fish buzzbaits in Dec. and Jan. :D

and the added bonus for me is that the smallies like to chase baitfish up the bluffs all summer and they hunt craws shallow in the late fall, so you can easily take them on the fly rod! ;)

* edited to add: no state income tax here either!

fishing user avatarAverageJoeBass reply :

Texas, preferably East Texas.  You have great fisheries like Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, Lake Conroe, etc, etc.  Also East Texas is some of the most beautiful area you will ever see.  Rivers, creeks, ponds.  Also in Texas there is no State Income Tax either.   :)

BIZ ! What are you saying !?!?  :o

I agree that the big fish are not just jumping into our boats, like a lot of people from other states might believe....... But then again, we DO HAVE lots of big fish ! And if 18lb Bass are not enough, we also have Smallmouths, Stripers, 100 to 300+ lb Sturgeon, Halibut, etc, etc....

+ great weather (besides right now :-( Freaking wind :-(

+ huge cultural diversity, where an oddball like me fits right in ;-)

I lived in North Louisiana for 3 years.... Worst 3 years of my life + I never caught a bass over 6 lbs.

After I moved back to Cali, I decided I'd never live ANYWHERE else ! I LOVE Cali ! :-)

Best weather. Best fishing (at least for big bass). Best place for a whacko like myself :-)

Oh, did I mention, I LOVE Cali ?   ;)

Peace,

Fish

fishing user avatarBtech reply :

All the Cali Posts wow ! Only one thing i like about Cali - THE GIRLS ! WOW.

Id move to Arizona again I lived there for a while and loved the warm weather. However Mstarr is right on NC we get cold winters that dont last long (and are still fishable) and nice summers, Plus the East Coast states are so close together you have hundres of lakes that arent far from eachother,

Another place Id like to move is TN like RW said - Home of Country Music and the Girlies are cute there too :) .... Oh didnt check if you were a girl sorry :) lol

fishing user avatarCaptain Obvious reply :

Ah yes Cali lets see......

Did you notice that everything you buy is known to cause cancer in the state of Cali :-?

The governor stinks ( not like Texas is great, but he's much better than Arnold)

Did I mention that the governor hates fishermen

When you read things like "highest cost of living outside of Cali" makes you wonder :o :o

They have to have Laws for everything, and I mean everything.

Giant bass ( And enough fishing pressure to kill a cow)

It's the land of the fruits and nuts

And to top it all off its just a matter of years until the whole state falls into the Pacific

Chris I'm glad that you love Cali but I could never see the point in living there,

D

The Jacksonville area would be great. You've got the fantastic St.Johns River watershed which includes Stick Marsh and Farm 13. They are absolute lunker factories. ;)

fishing user avatarMaineBassMan reply :

With all the guns that I own they wouldn't let me within 100 miles of California.

If I were to move I would pick between Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Tennessee. The cold weather doesn't bother me, I have activities that keep me busy year round: Hunting, fishing, and trapping. Ya, I go a little crazy thinking about bass fishing when the lakes are frozen over but it makes me love, enjoy and look forward to fishing that much more.

fishing user avatardone reply :

Don't they give you gun in texas when you buy a pack of gum? I kid, I love living in a state where the 2nd amendment is pretty well enjoyed.

You got that right, I may live in a Blue state, I'm Red Minded, but our state is pretty good with gun laws. It's an open carry state, not that many people exercise that right here. We are a concealed carry state to, so its not that bad.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

See, this right here is why I'd like to move to Tx, or some southern state...in cali. the criminals have more firepower than the cops..

Kinda ot. but what about Ga...there should be some good fishin down there...right.???  :)

And yup, I have guns too.. ;)

I own quite a few guns myself, and Arizona is a very friendly and pro gun state. Comfortable year round fishing, and just north of Phoenix is Lake Pleasant, with largemouth, smallmouth, striped, and white bass, channel and flathead catfish, and crappie.      Happy fishing.

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

So Cal has the biggest bass in the world and the best weather. Some of the hottest women and we do have an ocean with tons of awsome fishing.

Everything else sucks.

Super expencive, most presured lakes in the country, laws and rules for everything, and everybody is in a hurry. The traffic sucks people are rude and the hunting sucks.

I still will probably never move but when I hunt out of state and see how nice people are and how real they are it can be tempting.

fishing user avatarfourbizz reply :

Thats pretty much why I want out of here Matt.

Real people, realistic cost of living, and Elk, Muskies, Northerns and wild trout could easily replace largemouth for me.

I also understand that if a brother and sister marry in Tennessee, she can keep her last name.

Seeings how I hate the cold and the snow and the weather changing every 5 minutes in the mid-west and I have a lot of friends in Texas I would have to choose Texas but with that said I would not rule out Florida.  I would also consider North Carolina, absolutely beautiful.

Later, :)

I heard Mexico has some Big Bass :o wait a minute, that's not a state :-/ what about Alaska :D, nope, no Bass at all :-[...j/k...I would love to be back in Florida...on the gulf side, great fresh and inshore fishing...but might change my mind once I move to San Antonio, with Corpus Cristi an hour and a half away ;D

edit...I'm no longer a newbie

fishing user avatarBig Mike in Fl reply :

my suugestion would be similar to another...kissimmee, orlando area... toho, the aligator chain, the kissimmee chain, an hour and a half from stick marsh, the st. johns. etc etc. but not jsut fishing wise, there is about anything you would wanna do in orlando, and not far form it any where around is rural, good hunting (the deer are small, but get yourself a 300lb boar hog and you'll forget deer) if you're into that, decent people for the most part. an hour or so form the east coast if you get yourself into saltwater fishing. My point is, there are endless possibilities around there, and it isn't just a huge metro area, there is still a lot of country left in florida.

fishing user avatarbasspimple reply :

well, we do have winters, but kentucky is a beutiful state and is pretty great for fishing 9-10 months out of the year. kentucky and barkley out in western ky, and dale hollow and cumberland(river and lake) in the south, plus the ohio river and lots of smaller lakes in eastern kentucky that have great fishing. plus the people here will actually say hi to you when your walking down the street. ;D

fishing user avatarBass_Akwards reply :

Move to Cuba.  The next world record will be caught there.

fishing user avatarDerek Chance reply :

That sounds familiar.  ;D  I am from MN also. born and raised near Rochester.  My wife if from ST. Louis.  Got fed up with winter so we moved to MO.  some great bass lakes here.
