Do most people dread summer fishing? Most of the articles on this website lead me to believe that summer is the worst time for fishing.
I have the opposite opinion. I live in Missouri and I love hot weather, mid-day fishing.
I catch more and bigger bass in the summer during mid-day than any other time of the year.
Now Opine.
Good question. I was thinking the same question earlier today. Summer fishing definitely has its challenges. Especially living down here in S.Fl. Our summer heat and humidity is brutal. Surprisingly though, I don't catch many fish during this time but when I do, they are nice.
I love summer fishing. By far my most productive time, but I'm sure it's different in the south.

X2. .... June , July and August we do well up here in NY.
Its def. different here in the south. The heat and humidity is rediculous to July and August. I'll just wait until about the last hour or hour and a half of light and catch em off the banks. A lot of people night fish, but I dont do much of that.
I live in the NW Suburbs of Chicago and the summers aren't too terrible. Fishing can still be tough at times so I usually go later in the evenings and only go out for an hour or so. Plus, I love to fish topwater and that bite seems to pick up once the water warms up.
Come on down to the Texas coast if you want some rough summer fishing. Even at night temperatures can be over 90 degrees with 70% humidity.....
Don't get my wrong, fishing is still fun, but it can be a challenge of fortitude.

Yeah, you guys have some brutal summers with the temps and humidity.... Here by me we have not had a single day reach 90 yet.
I'm from southeastern KY and fishing has been pretty tough lately. It is ridiculously hot mid day so that time is out for us. If you want to catch anything besides heat stroke you have to fish early morning to late evening. It has been up in the low 90's for a couple weeks now. Summer can put a real damper on fishing, but it doesn't make catching anything impossible. Just a little more challenging, and I have found I have to change baits a lot until I figure out what they want to bite. It's not like early spring when they're chasing lures and biting anything that remotely resembles something to eat.
NIGHT FISHING!!!!

The thought of night fishing during the summer makes me as excited as kid on Christmas Eve
I would prefer to fish in the spring or fall personally. I have caught far more 7 plus pound bass during the spring and fall. July and August I don't catch as many over 7. The numbers are great sure but I want to catch lunkers. The end of June, July, August and September I have my best luck at night fishing. It is fun catching 20-30 2-4 lbers each day but I would much rather catch 10 bass and have 1 of them be over 7 lbs. Don't get me wrong You can still catch lunker bass during the summer. The second biggest bass I have caught an 8 lb 10 oz was caught during the second week of July. In my opinion the big fish bite is much more consistent during the spring and fall.
IMO the big fish bite EVERY day!!!! Just need to be where they are feeding!!! Most people say spring because that's when a lot of the females are carrying eggs and weigh more.... Fall both make and female are gorging themselves just like bears do getting ready for winter... ALL of these fish although maybe a little lighter during summer are all aggressively feeding every day during the summer!!!! Everyone just needs to be able to find where the big girls go during hot weather and long days of sunlight. This is just a guess on my part but summer fishing doesn't bode well with a high percentage of guys because they do not like to fish in deeper water nor at night!!!
Summer fishing is great! Just requires extra sunscreen and beer.
Since I apparently am a rookie at consistently catching 5 pound plus bass in the summer months I would like to hear every bodies favorite summertime technique preferably from some northern fisherman.
Summer is best for me. Not spread out on shorelines any longer and easier to find on deep breaks or points and usually stacked up. Fishing in 90 plus degree weather really does not bother me at all.
I so much prefer summer fishing to winter fishing!
Summer just means fishing alllll night long!!!
I wish AL's 90 degree weather was like IL's 90 degree weather....
I like summer fishing mostly for throwing Topwater at night. Love throwing pop-x's, Sammy's, buzzbaits, and frogs. But, I'd personally take fall fishing all year long. Would much rather be fishing comfortably in a hoodie...
Im not sure there is a difference...On 6/29/2014 at 12:31 AM, John V said:I wish AL's 90 degree weather was like IL's 90 degree weather....
you average humidity is 89% ours 86%...for the coolest part of the day and same difference but lower for both at hottest.
We just don't complain about it because it will be below 0 in 6months lol
I like summer a lot more than spring. At least in summer you have somewhat consistant weather.
I'd fish in death valley if there was a lake there, but no way I'd fish at the north pole.
Thankfully Indiana weather isnt so extreme in the summer. Dusk/dawn/night fishing is perfect for me during the week. On the weekends, if I'm on the water mid-day, I target deeper waters, boat docks, and shaded areas.
Pre-spawn is the best period hands-down, but summer can be extremely productive for both numbers and weight.
Weights go down in the summer months but the fish are more predictable.
If I could, I'd fish 365 days a year. Weather doesn't bother me and it doesn't stop a fish's instinct to eat. It's all a matter of finding fish and figuring out what they want to eat.

Hours on the water. No body just goes out and nails 10 lbs all day. I read somewhere some pro lunker hunter said they should display his catch as... 12.31 lbs...49 hours of fishing. Most guys who catch big fish spend a ton of time pursuing them.
I caught my fist fish over 10 this year and fished probably 60 hours for her.
I think people have an insane set of expectations. Only certain fisheries at certain times can produce 50lb+ bags for 4 days, the rest of that time its guys maybe bringing in a 20 one day and a possible zero the next. We see guys on tv fish these super lakes that have massive bass populations and then we fish a local lake and think something is wrong with us. Maybe your lake doesnt have schools of bass with 40 fish in it.
Summer fishing here in Northern VA is great from 6am to about 10am. During that time its still in the 60s but later it gets near 90 degrees. If you want to catch big fish here you have to find the coolest hours of the day.

Ehh, Yeah that's pretty much what I ment. Also, some of yall's mosquitoes are the size of small livestock.

When I realized this, (as well as the fact of bank vs Boat fishing productivity) I became way more confident in my abilities.
Just to up date......we still have not had one 90' day yet and I'm thankful for that.
I catch fish spring, summer, fall.. and if I wanted to ice fish Im sure I could figure them out then too.
If you fish the same way all the time then yes one season will be your season and or one situation will be your situation and you'll catch em then but then things change you catch nothing..but if you roll and adjust, it doesnt matter the season.
So far this Summer since the beginning of June I've caught over 100 fish easily.
Only thing I hate about summer is the gnats and mosquitoes! They pest me terrible. I cannot focus while they are buggin the doggone outta of me! My favorite time of the year to fish is fall cause its shorts and longsleeve comfortably. Big bass in fall are fun!
I have been getting great numbers of bass, a few 5 lbers and a 6 lb 6 oz. Still haven't seen one over 7 since spring. Pretty good chance I will see several this fall.
I agree completely. I love the stability that the dogs of summer offer. The fish position themselves predictably and are eating every day due to their high metabolism. Find good shade, current breaks, or deep water edges and you are going to catch them. It doesnt matter what the weather was like or is like the way that it matters in spring or late fall. Also, around here it seems like the better portion of the bass boat owners winterize their boats as soon as the fish are done spawning so their is very little fishing pressure. Not saying I am immune to the heat. It deffinently gets to me after a couple hours of straight 90º-110º temps. But I am not fishing for money so I'll take a swim break, relax for awhile or call it quits early if its too miserable.
I dont catch the biggest bass during summer but there sure is no drought of catching fish.. I catch more in summer just not quite as big as spring
I broke out my canoe today for the first boat fishing this year and the fish wouldnt quit biting all day
over 20 fish today but biggest was a 17.5" tho
Here in South Florida water temps can reach 90*+, with most of our lakes shallow bowls. Fishing for bass can be a challenge. If you fish at night it becomes a mosquito feast, and you'll be amazed how many red eyes are looking at you after dark. Gators come out of the wood work, like cockroaches. The one big summertime plus down here is peacock fishing. They love the heat, the hotter the better. They will hit at high noon, and will viciously attack crankbaits and top water bait. There is nothing like fighting a big Peacock. They love hot water, they just can survive water temps below 60*.
It's definitely dependant on your area. I'm in Western Md with mountains. It's 6pm and 88 outside currently but it's not bad. Summertime is hot to me but it's not like it was when I lived in Ga or Fl. That's a different type of heat all together.

I've been catching nice bass on big worms, lizards and the live target mouse. With one Seiko fish that went just over 4. All of my lunkers have come 11-3ish bite drops till about 730pm. Am fishing hasn't been what it normally is no am spinner bite bait, top water or soft plastics. Haven't had a chance to go night fishing yet. Also the other day I got a crankshaft bite for a solid 30mins 2 days later wouldn't touch it.
Crank bait****
It's all about finding the right lakes and fishing them right. I set out around 10:00am today and fished til 1:00pm and caught anywhere from 5-7 bass, I honestly don't remember. Fish low and slow during the hottest parts of the day.
Don't be afraid of the night...be afraid of what hunts in the night!
Our heat index is 105 by noon!
Ole Catt starts hunting @ night in May & continues until September
Oddly, summer fishing has been best around here smack dab in the middle of the day. Morning and evening bites have been slow all year.
I love fishing in the summer! I start end of March/beginning of April with trout fishing. I do that for 2 months or so, then head right in to summer for bass.
At the ponds I fish here in the St. Louis area most of my bites have come mid morning to mid afternoon. I consistantly catch 2 to 3 pounders. The weather has been great here and I have been fishing 3 to 4 times a week. I like soft plastics. Senkos are my favorite.
Mac
Big worms. Zoom Mag Ol' Monsters
Frog bite has been heating up.
Night fishing has been very productive lately as well. Buzzbait.
