fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

Chek out these fish. I see these all th time on ebay.

I figured I would post this to show you guys how bad skin mounts can look. Replicas can also look bad but I dont think they can look as bad as these skin mounts, and these are freash!!

The sad thing is the taxidemist says he has been a profesional fultime taxidemist for 38 years. WOW

badtaxidermy2.jpg

badtaxidermy.jpg

and just for fun I found a bad looking replica that the guy is advertising as the world record at 22.8lbs ????

I feel sorry for the poor customers who dont know any better

You mean to tell me that isn't what a real bass looks like?

fishing user avatarislandbass reply :

Matt,

Thanks for the heads up on this. I know you have a taxidermy background to know what is medicore from what is excellent. I haven't caught my trophy worthy bass yet, but since I don't have knowledge on this kind of subject, I could have fallen hook, line, and sinker to pardon the pun.

By chance, could you post pics of superb replicas for comparison?  8-)

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

WRB sent me a pic of his replica that was beautiful but I cant find it. Right now on ebay there is a very nice looking mount. Looks natural and corect. BTW I have absolutle zero afiliation with the seller.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Largemouth-Bass-Taxidermy-Fish-Mount_W0QQitemZ170470000331QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item27b0cdc6cb

When you look at a mount in person you should say wow. You shouldnt be thinking something doesnt quite look right. It should look like a real live fish. If it doesnt then its not good.

Also I emailed the guy who claims his mount is the 22.8 WR. He says that dispite what I have read that George Perry did not eat his fish, insinuating that his mount was cast off of a mold from Perry's fish. Wow

that is prety bad.

fishing user avatarblkbearklr2001 reply :

Wow as a taxidermist myself, would be embarrased to send something like that out of the shop.

Skin mounts look good also if you take the time to make sure the form wether bought or carved yourself actually fits the fish you are applying it to.

Joe

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

Taxidermy is an art. I've seen some real flops -if I had time I'd relate some funny/sad stories. And then there are the artists. They usually have a long waiting list, and keep that in check with high per inch prices. It pays to do the research and find someone really good. The alternative is not worth the time and money you might save.

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Those don't even look real. Not to mention how frigging skinny those things look.

I'd bet many go on ebay looking for and buying junk just like this thinking they are sprucing up the den. ::) I have 2 musky that belonged to my dad and whoever he had do them seriously needs to find a new line of work.

fishing user avatarJavelin200 reply :

Looks they were mounted on Walleye forms.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Snausages!

fishing user avatarislandbass reply :

Matt,

Thanks! I might be heading to cali to visit family this summer and I just might lucky enough to at least visit some of those legendary lakes.

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

Bowfish, those are so awful I wouldn't mind owning one for a laugh.

I think I'd go with the top one, the Dracula Lynx, or maybe the fox that looks like it's smoking a ******.

fishing user avatarBobby Uhrig reply :

Its a crappie largemouth perch -crappie in the way it was done

I know, lol, there was another one I saw a couple months ago that was funnier than those, but I can't find it.

fishing user avatarBass_Akwards reply :

Mattlures are you sure you were in a taxidermists?  I think you mistook those replicas for old Big Mouth Billy.

Big Mouth Billy Bass is an Animatronic singing toy, resembling a Largemouth Bass, popular in 2000 and 2001. Made of rubber stretched over a mechanical frame, at first glance it closely resembles a mounted fish. It turns its head outwards and then wiggles on its trophy plaque and sings kitschy cover songs, such as "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and "Take Me To The River" by Al Green  ;D ;D ;D ;D

fishing user avatarTin reply :

On second look they definitely look like Florida fish. Skinny with huge heads.

exactly what I was thinking.

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

Those animals are bad but they also aper to be very old. Most taxidermy that use actual skins,(fish or animals) look worse the older they get.

Taxidermy is not the time to try and same money

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

One of my housemates in college mounted a decent 8pter he shot. He did a darn good job -except for the lips. When they dried they had the expression your dog gets when it's about to throw up. He hung it over the dining room table, and it would kinda make your stomach queasy lookin' at it while you ate your breakfast.

fishing user avatarDock Master reply :

Wow!!!

That is terrible!!!

fishing user avatarbilgerat reply :

They look like the singing Billy Bass things they sell in the local Walgreens.... :o

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

Billy Bass doesn't have the holographic spinnerbait eyes like those mounts. That was a nice touch. Very realistic. ::)

My son is having a halloween party this fall. Perfect!!! Except for maybe the fox that looks like it's smoking a ******. Momma wouldn't approve.  ;D

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Since the advent of fiberglass replicas, true taxidermists who are capable of doing skin mounts

have been in a steady decline, where master taxidermists have become a dying breed.

In my teens, I've dabbled in mammalian taxidermy, fish heads mounts & hide tanning (w/ sulphuric acid)

This much I can tell you, whether it's fish reproductions or the real deal,

your ability to "paint" back the colors is what separates the men from the boys.

Roger

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

you are correct Roger. But not only do you have to pant, if you do a skin mount you also have to prepare the skin correctly and then you have to mount it in a natural pose. Those are both difficult things to do. Most guys who do skin mounts fail at one of those 3 key aspects. Whith a replica it is mostly the painting.

Both methods can be done well. both can also look bad like the mounts I posted. It just bothers me when I read the adds and they say stuff like 20+ years presional experience! and then you see their work looks like a first attempt.

No two ways about it, taxidermy is an art form, a gift that only a few possess.

Matt, that reminds me of a fellow here in Florida, who thinks of himself as a taxidermist.

His mannikin work is atrocious, and hanging on his wall is a terribly mishapen skin-mounted pike.

After approaching the mount I said: "This fish is far from home, there's no pike out here".

Well, his face lit up with pride, and he told me that very few people know what kind of fish that is.

I thought to myself, jeez if it looked anything like a pike, maybe more people would recognize it ::) :-/

I've said it a million times before, but their work is so amazing, http://www.advancedtaxidermy.com/ is the best taxidermy i have ever seen.

i met a guy and he has a 5+ smallie on his wall with pike teeth - wouldn't you file those off???

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

fourbizz I looked through their gallery pics and they are indeed incredible. That is what taxidermy should look like.

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

Fourbizz, those are amazing!  Thanks for the link.  I like mount of the rainbow trout laying of the rocks the best.  That's one of the coolest mounts I've ever seen.  Gotta love those diorama mounts in the coffee tables, too.  Those have always been particularly impressive to me.

fishing user avatarBranuss04 reply :

On a way to a lake that 4bizz and I fish there is a casino that we often visit for some cheap grub.  On the walls of this casino are THE worst trout mounts I have ever seen in person.  The bodies are often lumpy and are not symetrical whatsoever.  The best part is that the company who took credit for these labeled some of them as "Topaz Tazidermy".  Not trying to bash this company, as maybe this is their "oops" mounts, but I sure wouldn't put my name on these mounts and I sure as heck would fire the person incharge of spelling.

I'm going up there in the next month.  I'll take pics...

That's really funny.

Your story reminds me of a taxidermist in New Jersey who painted fish like an 8-year old

with his first set of oil paints. Looking over this man's fish mounts without laughing out loud

was a true test of strength. Proving that beauty is in the eye of the beholder,

he actually said, "NOBODY paints a fish like me!". Well, I suppose he was right,

nobody does paint a fish like him, nor would anybody want to :-[ ::)

Little late on this, but this is the worst mount I have ever seen in person.  This company had more mounts hanging on the wall, but this one makes me laugh every time.  Pay special attention to the company name...
