First Bait 2024

fishing user avatarBass Angler Magazine reply :

Do you remember the first bait you ever bought ?

fishing user avatarTuckahoe Joe reply :

Yup. It was a long long time ago. Actually, it was more like 2 or 3 months. My little brother set me up with some of his extra stuff to get me started but the first I ever bought was a 1/4 ounce Mepps Aglia Inline Spinner. Got it snagged after 3 casts and lost it. After that I picked up a Scum Frog Popper and a couple Bandit crankbaits.

fishing user avatarloodkop reply :

I bought 3 Heddon top water lures with money I received for my 6th birthday. Crazy Crawler, Meadow Mouse and a Tiny Torpedo. The mouse had a metal lip and a leather tail and it drove the farm pond bass crazy. I still have the crawler 37 years later.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

A prerigged Creme worm with the spinner in front, I caught everything on that little bait.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

I wish I could remember what I did yesterday as opposed to remembering what was the first bait I purchased.

I do remember some important "first purchases" in my life but not any bait or lure.

Am I old or what?????

Bluebasser, don't tell anyone but I still use that Creme bait and will be using it in a tournament next weekend.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

My first was an L&S jointed lure that looked like a bullhead. Never caught a fish with it.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Heddon Lucky 13, red head shiner pattern. Bought it around the early 1960's to go along with my Pflueger "SilKast" knuckle buster. Still have the Silkast and a tubular steel rod it is on. :)

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

The first lure I ever bought, was a Hula Popper, and the first plastic I ever purchased, was a bag of white Slug-O's. I was 7 or 8 years old, and that popper caught me my first big fish (probably 4-5lbs), but hooked me for life on the thrill of bass fishing, especially topwater.

fishing user avatarvabass1 reply :

Yes I do:

1 Mepps Aglia in-line spinner size 2 silver with hair

1 Mepps Aglia size 2 gold with hair

1 Rapala minnow size 7 silver black back

1 Rapala minnow size 7 gold black back

From those I´ve only lost one, the gold blade Aglia.

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

Arbogast hula popper.

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

Zell Rowland signature Rebel Pop R. This lure caught my first bass as well.

fishing user avatarpbrussell reply :

I wish I remembered what my first bait was. I think when I got back into fishing some of the first baits I bought were senko style worms.

fishing user avatarbkohlman reply :

Rooster Tail

I'm in the same boat. I could name five or six and maybe it was one of them and maybe it wasn't. If I had to bet on it, I'd say an original #7 Rapala. Black back, silver body. I remember saving two months worth of allowance to buy it.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I do not remember the first bait I bought when I was a kid and just started fishing, but I do remember what I bought first 8-10 years ago when I got back into fishing after a long break from the late 90's till then. A pack of 4" Senko's.

Haha that was mine to though I didn't catch squat on it.

fishing user avatarbrushhoggin reply :

the first bait i ever bought were earthworms

fishing user avatarCoBass reply :

I have no idea what the first bait I ever bought was but chances are it was some kind of inline spinner because I was into trout fishing way back then. I do remember the first bait I used when I decided I wanted to target bass. 1/4 oz rattletrap, chrome with a black back. Caught a couple of 2 pounders that day and I've been chasing those silly green fish ever since.

I landed my very first bass with that lure! The Creme was my primary lure back in the mid sixties. I remember getting it snagged once and I went in to get it back...we didn't have a lot of money in those days and I wasn't about to lose my favorite lure.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

No, but I do remember the first one I hooked myself with. It was a Wiggle Wart.

fishing user avatartytay89 reply :

black buzzbait, the classic clapper not a wisperer

fishing user avatarKnightiac reply :

Some 8" pre-rigged worm with three hooks in it, front middle and end. Had no idea how to really fish it. I threw it in the water and sat there for thirty minutes without moving my line. Saw the line move and set the hook. Good times lol.

fishing user avatartholmes reply :

A Lazy Ike, yellow with red spots. Caught my first non-live bait bass on it.

Tom

fishing user avatarbowhunter63 reply :

1/4 ounce Yellow spinnerbait and a floating Rapala.

fishing user avatarbassr95 reply :

#3 Mepps Aglia

fishing user avatarChris reply :

Smithwick horse fly

fishing user avatarSilas reply :

About 60 years ago.....a Heddon RIVER RUNT!!

And the cool "trick" at the time was to "notch" the front line- tie eye with a file, up high so that when you tied the bait on it would run DEEPER! Of course, deeper in those days was about 6-8 feet

But to a Cajun in South Louisiana , "Cher, dat's deep, yeah!" Our depth finder was our fishing pole.....we stuck it in the water and if we couldn't feel bottom....that was Deep!

fishing user avatardeep reply :

Think it was an X-rap size 8. I haven't been bass fishing that long.

fishing user avataryoungbuckanglers reply :

Roostertail 1/8 all the way!! I was a creek trout fisherman until i found bass. i tried a roostertail and had luck and loved the fight! still use them today!

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

It was one of three baits: a creme worm with harness, a Mepps aglia spinner, or a beetle spin. I'm almost embarrassed over the number of baits I have now.

fishing user avatargreyleg33 reply :

Ha! I'm at least a hundred but I think it was a Rapala Jerk Bait.
