And I rightfully deserved it. I went out tuna fishing yesterday. I was using some lighter tuna tackle. I was reeling these fish in for 25 minutes each in 93 degree heat. My arms were straining and burning from the lactic acid. I caught about 7 of them. The first 2 were ok to get in. It was fun-what fighters. It was rockn and rolling out there.By the time the 6th one came around i could barely lift my arms. Then I was looking at the rods trolling drinking my gatorAde saying please not my rod please not my rod. All of the sudden BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ- Oh my God not again. This one actually spooled me at 500 yards of braid. I couldnt even stop him or turn him-I have never seen anything like it. What a day- I could barley move and my two friends said look at this wuss/****** wimp bass fisherman. They were right
Wow!
Sounds great to me....Wuss!
I'd be a wuss anyday!
I cant move-someone help me

I know what you're talking about, wuss, I was one as well the last time I went tuna fishing. The best part of that trip was catching all the fish and feeling worn out afterwards. The worst part of that trip was listening to the news on the radio the whole day...September 11, 2001. :'( That was the last time I took a charter out tuna fishing.
Tuna really are some beastly fish. There are times down here when the Tuna schools get so thick it's almost aggravating. It's not that I don't mind catching them. After enough fish though, you just don't feel like moving anymore. I personally don't keep Tuna to eat all that often. We'll run into them when we troll for Dolphin. If we're out fun fishing, they're great fish for people who don't get to fish in saltwater all that much. As far as a food fish, I'll pass.
The smaller Tuna species make fantastic bait though. Rig them whole on a bridle, or use the belly strips out on the flatlines.
Had the same "problem" with a 500lb + blue marlin we caught on our honeymoon. The fish hit while it was my turn in the chair and my job (at least that's what I told myself) was just to make sure the rod and reel didn't go overboard.
The mate was yelling at me to crank, which I thought was funny, since the fish was still running. After about 20 min of just holding on for dear life and trying to crank, I tapped out. Friggin' nuts.
i cant see how catching gigantic tuna could be that fun.the stuff i see on tv seems more like work to me
QuoteI cant move-someone help me
Take a couple of aspirins, won 't eliminate the lactic acidosis but you 'll feel a lot better.
Or
Get a six pack, after 6 beers it won 't hurt so much, then add a nother 6 pack, after 12 beers you won 't care if it hurts,-
wussy

That is the primary reason why I've started to really enjoy bass fishing. For me to go out saltwater fishing on the boat it really has become work. At least two days to prep (one if I actually have enough time). Gotta rig baits. I mean I can rig up a ballyhoo very, very quickly, but when you do twenty-four of them, it takes a good bit of time. It's nasty work also.
Freshwater, I can go to the store, pick up what I want to eat, grab my bag of lures, a few rods, and I'm set.
A few years ago I caught a 75 lb AJ on the last day
of the trip at about 8:00 AM. I didn't fish the rest of
the day and have not fished saltwater since.
Wuss? You bet!
;D ;D ;D ;D

Good lord, thats a huge AJ.
EDIT: 75 not 175. The World Record in 155 lbs 10ozs.

EDIT2: Oh, well then...still a decent AJ.
I was rolling on the floor when I read this.

To be honest I never met a bass fisherman that wasn't a wuss, bass fishing is fun if you don't have anything better to do.
You did well to land the fish, most couldn't because they don't know how to, you can't drag a pelagic species like you do a bass.
I'll take saltwater any day of the week.

That's funny
I find the same holds true when I go out bass fishing with a saltwater angler. After 30 minutes of casting they start complaining.. all they wanna do is troll aimlessly around with a beer in thier hand. Same sport, different worlds...
Im ready to go again tomarrow-
Around here Freshwater vs Saltwater is like democrats vs Conservatives. There are very few like my self that have a passion for both. I have to defend myself all the time against my Saltwater buddies who have no appreciation of Bass fishing. I feel Bass fishing is way more rewarding due to the time and understanding of what it takes to catch Bass and the different presentations for different times of the year and even day. While you cant beat the fight of a Redfish its just not much of a rewarding feeling when you catch one. I can go out with one rod and one lure and catch all the redfish and trout I want. That's just not as much fun to me. I think most of the Bass bashers are just too lazy to put in the time to understand Bass Fishing, they want to hold a rod in one hand with a cork and a beer in the other which don't get me wrong I enjoy that from time to time also but if I had to choose between the two it would be Bass any day of the week. I am pretty much in he minority in my parts as i am located in Saltwater paradise. To each his own though, I guess it depends on your personality, I rather Sit in a Deer stand all winter and kill a couple Deer vs Blast dozens of ducks. It's all about the challenge to me. I had to join a Bass club just so I could make some new friends that appreciate this great sport.

just dont go swimming afterwards
One thing that I had to laugh at yesterday was I brought my 8 ft rod with a 1 1/2 oz spro jig on it to cast at any lobster ballons or bouy markers that might hold a Mahi Mahi. He pulled up along side of it maybe 60-ft I skipped this jig right under this buoy and the capt said. How the hell did you do that. I said WATCH AND LEARN. I pulled a trigger fish on the first cast and a few more -PINPOINTIING EVERY CAST. I said "let me see you saltwater $%$#%'s do that. LOL
Bass fishing is like playing baseball, more precise and harder to catch
Saltwater is more like Softball, I've watched the shows on WFN. Its tough pullin those monsters in but it just seems not that difficult otherwise. ie livebait..also an ocean FULL of species vs freshwater where they're all cramped in 10% of the lake or pond and you gotta find them.
Just my 2 cents comparison
Nah !! Its all relative. Its fishing. Fish are in certain areas for certain reasons.. In fact the ocean would be a lot harder to locate fish being so vast.BUT usually they can be patterned by the routes they take for spawning/migration/feeding -the food comfort shelter theory(wrecks/reefs) Its all good.Just on a larger scale. Let me tell ya -them tuna are all muscle and almost yanked me over the side twice. If i went in i could probably hold on to the rod and water ski barefoot LOL.

Well said! Wish your thinking would work in politics but you are way too balanced and thoughtful to have that happen
trolling for tuna and bass fishing are very different. one you sit back and wait for a huge fish, the other you play around with toys (baits) and trick the fish into thinking its food.
totally different game as i see it.

Id like to try red fishing it looks like the only thing that would be as fun as bass fishing in salt water. Oh and tarpon like the juvinile ones that looks like a blast especialy on a fly rod. But things like snook no. Snook dont even look like they fight worth crap.Bass fishing DOMINATES all. Oh and so do stripers. Hardest fighting fish pound for pound out there

Call me anything you want for a day of fishing like that!
QuoteOh and so do stripers. Hardest fighting fish pound for pound out there
See my avatar. Thats the hardest fighting pound for pound fish swimming. I've caught a ridiculous amount of different species of fish. There is nothing that fights as hard as a Peacock does for it's size. I've heard Smallies are close. I intend to find out about that one of these days.

The biggest lakes in the world are spit in a bucket when you compare it to the ocean. If you think it's not difficult to find what you're looking for in saltwater, you're grossly mistaken. If you think the oceans are full of fish, unfortunately you'd be wrong. In my relatively short life, I've seen saltwater fisheries get totally decimated by overfishing. The Bahamas recently RADICALLY changed the fishing laws as far as tourists are concerned in an effort to try and save whats left of the fishery.

Are you smoking crack? No way in heck does a P'**** out fight a Bonita or many other fish pound for pound. LMB, yes. But not nearly half as many saltwater game fish.

Nooooo i know peacocks are very aggressive and fight very hard but nothing beats a striper pound for pound. Ive had a 1 pounder take little strips of drag off of one of my baitcasters.Theyre the strongest fish that swims

Anything with a forked tail fights ridiclously...like a striper

Bass'n knows what he is talking about ! To each their own on which fights the best, many opinions are based on the species located in your area.
As far as challenge goes and Bass'n would agree, fishing inshore from the beach can be quite challenging, you are not assured you will even get a strike after hours of casting, but I do like the reward when I score. As in any type of fishing, one must be aware of the nuances of your target species and how to " hunt" fish.

Stripers are also a saltwater fish they can both waters so it counts for both haha
I probably should have specified freshwater. But this being primarily a freshwater forum, I guess I thought that would be obvious.
If we're going to throw saltwater fish into the mix, there is absolutely nothing in freshwater that can compare with most of the Pelgagics. Hell, I don't think theres anything in freshwater that can compare to many of the inshore species as far as the power of the fight goes.
By the way, Bassn; Bonita are sissies.
I prefer bass fishing over saltwater also.
My rig (Hewes Bayfisher) is setup to do both, but I find myself bass fishing 90% of the time. I just love all the different techniques and subtleties associated with bass fishing. I go to Flamingo (saltwater), I'll catch fish until my arms hurt and I'll use two rods all day long. I go bass fishing at Loxahatchee or Okeechobee and I'll bring eight rods, use every one, and kick myself for not bringing two more!
I'm sure you have respect for the fish now??
Have you ever noticed that river bass are stronger than the bass in ponds and lakes?
Smallies fight the best but the bigger pickerel are awesome fighters. I'm sure the northern pike and muskies have the fresh water fight sewed up.
Don't sell the bluefish short.... ;D
My older brother could press a 175lb barbell set with one arm. He did cement work all the time when he was younger. He was on a party boat once and had two 10lb blue fish on a spreader setup. He sat down for a few minutes after that.
"Pound for pound" a white perch can sometimes make a striper feel like a walleye...They just don't grow to be very many pounds! 8-)
Didymo fights like a beast to be a single cell algae.
