I found the mother of all beds in a fishery here its literally a 20 ft diameter circle with bream and bass bedding there the bass are swimming and patroling it looks like then will bum rush through the middle and chaos follows lol so what should i try to catch something here? I tried a baby brush hog a crank bait and a swimbait and nothing! Lol slow fast swim pause jerk whatever still nothing
It is probably multiple beds next to eachother....lol
Yes i figured that lol im still wanting to get some suggestions haha
for bedding bass If your sight fishing I would say try the big bite baits warmouth
Bubblegum (Pink) Senko. Serious. Drop it in a nest and watch the bass. If it leaves and comes back, it's catchable. You can see the pink lure and watch how the bass reacts. Twitch it. Soak it. Etc. if you see pink, then it disappears, set the hook!
Put on a dropshot and wacky rig a senko style bait or nose hook a roboworm style finesse worm. They will almost always attack one of these since they are basically polar opposites.
yeah ill have to do some of these suggestions i threw jerk bait swimbait crankbait baby brush hog jig n pig and NOTHING haha

Interesting, I have not heard of the bubble gum trick. I have some bubble gum worm. I'll have to try it next time.
ive got some yum bubble gum lemon swirl senkos they are awesome neon yello and pink in color, another one i like is the sweet tater pie senko style from strike king
You know, Zoom is now making a Senko-type stick, the Zoom Fluke Worm. It's 6", all Senko looking with a forked tail.
I threw it the other day, and that is the only thing the bass bit. I threw a mess of colors and styles and varieties on a bed with an approx. 3lb male guarding. No female that I could find. The male only bit the Zoom Fluke Worm. Sadly, I had a light wire hook when he took hold of one and he bent it and threw it. (Hook had been bent previously on a snag, shoulda replaced it, I know).
For last few years, spawners have gone nuts on wacky rigged lizards. Not so this year, but it is early yet. I need to grab another bag of the Watermelon Magic Zoom Fluke Worm. Lost several in the fights.
What kind of swimbait did you use? I usually go with a big ol bluegill swimbait and drop it on them and they smack it.
FISH LIZARDS!
i was usin a houdini colored swimming fluke
Mattlures Ultimate Blue Gill Flat Tail, cast one of those babies and work it nice and slow. Bedding bass crack.
Bedding bass use lizzards or water dogs(koppers nest raiders) they eat the basses eggs so the bass hate them and eat them.
Cast the lizzards in the beds and twitch them.
thanks for all the info guys! ill have to go out and get some of the big bite warmouths and some lizards which actually i dont have any haha
can anyone recommend a good color? i fish clear green and some clear brown tinted waters with green algae here and there

booooooooo... Fishing beds = shooting them in a barrel. If it isn't for money, don't do it.

Oh well in that case... Bowfishing or dynamite. Whatever it takes to not get skunked, right? lol
You might be working it a little to fast. Try slowing down and leaving it on their bed for 10-20 seconds. It will annoy them or at least get their attention. They won't hit your bait if you swim it in front of them or something like that.
Dead stix a plastic bait in that bed of beds! Sooner or later.... I have fished a good bed for 3 hours before a pickup! I don't have the patience now thou! As always ... Have fun!!
I like the ideas previously mentioned, but also know there are some bass that can't be coaxed into biting. If there are eggs present that's a no-brainer. That fish will be aggressive. However, I have noted that many males are simply not interested in defending the bed just before the female moves on the bed and while actively mating. Before or after those times it can be pretty easy, but they get in a funk just before they mate. I found a four pound fish yesterday that would not leave the bed and the female was hanging out around the edges of the bed slowly cruising. I had him follow two lures to the edge of the bed, but he would never hit anything. He was just waiting on her...
Thats good too know cus this might be what was happenin maybe in a day or so theyll be aggressive more
Let it sit. My money is on that your casts are wayyyy to fast. Ive had it where Ive let it sit in there for 5-10 minutes until they cant take it anymore
I dont condone bed fishing, but since youre not connecting... tie up a dropshot with a long tag end, cast beyond the bed and drag the weight to the edge of bed. Now let your bait fall into the nest, lift it and see what the bass does. Might have to let it sit a while, but eventually the fish will try to move it like other debris. Want to get a reaction? Use a bluegill colored bait. My suggestion: 4.5 straight tail roboworm in ehlers edge. I think Jfrancho wrote an article about this technique. Just let the poor things go...
why are some people against bed fishing? i could understand if someone was catching and keeping taking the fish from the eggs permanently, but i just catch a fish take a pic and release i just love fishing for fishing
CPR is fine with me bud. Must understand not everyone on here shares your views of catch and release though haha.
I am agsinst those who do it as an easy way to fill their freezer with fillets, or for the glory of showing off a vulnerable and aggressive fish that's just trying to reproduce... also know theres MANY lurkers on this site using this info to put a hurtin' on YOUR bass. Not just mine, or his.
Just something to consider.

Mostly because there is no real challenge in it aside from figuring out what will trigger a strike (oh just let it sit on the bed for 10 mins until it can't take it anymore??? SKILL!!!), and you also risk damaging or killing a fish (we've all gilled something at some point and it was never on purpose!) that is protecting the next generation- which you also hope to fish for, right?
Call me ignorant, but that's just how I feel about it. I wont' judge others who think it's ok though... Unless they're not releasing afterwards of course. It will be different for everyone. Shooting fish in a barrel isn't my thing though, and I'd rather not catch anything than stoop to stationary fish I know are only striking because they're defending their young. It's just too easy/boring IMO and pulling a fish off a bed simply does nothing to light my fire. I wouldn't be proud of it so IMO why bother?

It's illegal to fish beds here in PA for the spawn season. Almost all states around us simply up the size limit to 15 from 12 inches, it doesnt close
