Most embarrassing moments 2024

fishing user avatarJediAmoeba reply :

What are yinz most embarrassing moments fishing?

1st - Trout fishing some years ago I was using a brand new small inline bucktail.  The trout were slamming it...and I kept losing them.  I lost at least 15...a few times they would hit it, I would continue reeling and they would hit it again.  Frustrated, I snipped it off and grabbed it...I noticed I didnt feel any hooks and looked at it.  It didnt have one.  It had a split ring but no hook.  I put a hook on but the feeding frenzy had died down and I only caught one.

2nd - About 15 years ago I bought a new spinner bait and it had long skirt that covered the hook, which seemed pretty cool to me at the time.  I consider myself a pretty good spinnerbait fisherman and have great confidence with them.  I was fishing with a friend and we were throwing around pads and thick stuff.  My second cast I had a huge hit and tried to set the hook and it came flying out of its mouth and smacked the side of the aluminum boat.  I figured the bass must have engulfed the blades. A few casts later and I missed another one.  Over the next 30 minutes or so I missed 5 more as my frustration level and use of creative metaphors increased.  I wasn't using a trailer hook because of the thick vegetation but decided I needed to anyway...reached into the tackle bag and grabbed one. As I went to put it on the hook i discovered the hook had a clear plastic tube covering the hook point.  My friend never let me live that down.

I've thrown AT MINIMUM 3 pair of pliers into the lake while holding the unhooked fish in my other hand

fishing user avatargimruis reply :

Launching the boat without putting the drain plug in seems to be a fairly common experience shared by most at some point.  I did it and went a couple miles out onto the lake before realizing it once.  My friend said there was some water in the bottom of the boat and it was a sunny day out so I realized what I had done.  I started the bilge, and it took probably 20 minutes before almost all the water got pumped out.  After I was done loading back up, the rest drained out when I removed the plug at the ramp.

Luckily I could reach around to the outside bottom of the transom to put the plug in while on the water because I have long arms.  Otherwise I would have continued taking on water and the outcome could have been much worse.

Nah, all you gotta do is hammer down on the throttle and it’ll run out the back! Just make sure to have a plan when you come off pad

fishing user avatarhaggard reply :

* Pulled up the anchor to move to another spot, got up to speed and it felt sluggish, turned around to see anchor skipping across the lake chasing behind me. Apparently forgot to pull up the anchor.

* Tossed GoPro overboard to record whatever was at the bottom of the lake. Pulled up the GoPro to move to another spot. Motor wouldn't start. Windy day, got pushed into shore, climbed out of the boat to find GoPro tether wrapped around the prop. Apparently forgot to pull up the GoPro.

* Left rods in rod holders on the way back to camp, angled up and out over the transom. One of themå snagged a tree branch and took drag for about 300 ft. I didn't realize what had happened until I backed the boat up into the site and removed the rod. Followed the line under the trailer, the truck, down the driveway, along the road until I recovered the lure stuck in the tree. In the dark and pouring rain.

* Drain plug. You know the drill.

* Motored around a point to get into a cove, not at a ridiculous speed but well over headway speed. Knew the point was shallow so gave what I thought was adequate distance from shore. Yakking with my passenger who was sitting forward of the center console. I glance at the finder and see the bottom coming up... then coming up much faster. Realized this was Not Good and what was about to happen so throttled down fast while simultaneously tilting the motor up and trying to not throw passenger over the bow. The boat stopped just as some part of the underside barely kissed the bottom. Backed out of the area and then saw the shallow water marker and realized I was between it and the shore. Shame on me but a good lesson in distracted boating.

When I started fishing tournaments, I didn't quite understand how to measure the fish and probably threw twenty or so keepers back before I was corrected. My fishing partner wasn't thrilled by this revelation, lol.

fishing user avatarGTN reply :

I fished tournaments with a small club. For two years I won every tournament -12. I joined a bigger club for more competition. I got asked by a non-boater to be his partner at the old club. I was very cocky that morning at the boat launch.
I got My butt handed to me. Big bag weights were coming in and all I had was 2 small bass.

Hahahah! Still caught him though

fishing user avatarDanielG reply :

Belly ornament...

Out about a hour from home, I live on the lake and have electric motors. I pulled up a smallish bass and am holding him rather close while trying to get a rear treble hook out. He flips and the forward treble hook stabs me in the belly. I'm wearing a tshirt. The barb is in, no blood, no pain. I can't pull it out. I can't get it out of him at that angle. The fish is periodically flopping around.

I have to stand to mosey home. I arrive with a bass hanging and flopping about on my belly. I've poured water on him to keep him alive. Don't ask me why, I just figured it's not his fault. But, if he died he'd stop moving. Eventually we come to an understanding. I need him to stop moving, he needs to live, so he calms down a bit and waits looking up at me with that big eye, curling his tail once and awhile. He's probably near death right.

At home I manage to yank the hook out without going to the ER (not fun), the fish dies. I bury him (her?) in the flower bed. He's destined to become a petunia. The wife still chuckles about it sometime. She says she has pictures. She blackmails me once and awhile.  Sigh.....

I've also hooked a new dobyns pole with a carudo reel in the middle ferrule while casting and javelined it over my head in what was a very good cast. Luckily the hook stayed hooked and I reeled it in. It's so weird to see that pole shoot out over the water though. It kinda happens in slow motion giving you time to have that 'sinking feeling'. Ya, pun intended....

It doesn't work that way.  Only screws in from the outside.

fishing user avatarHawkeye21 reply :

I flipped my kayak in the last hour of a tourney last year.  Not only was it embarrassing because it happened next to a young couple but I also had a bunch of my gear sink to the bottom of the lake.  Spent that last hour of the tourney trying to fish out as much gear as I could.

fishing user avatarPourMyOwn reply :

When I was 17 I was fishing in Southeastern Ohio with my cousin, throwing jigs to wood hidden near the bank. I lost a 5+ right at the boat when my line broke. I proceeded to unleash a tirade of the foulest words I could manage in a pretty loud voice. We hadn't seen a boat all day, so I felt like we were alone.

As we came around the corner, a Mennonite or Amish family was fishing the same bank. They heard every word.

Now I rarely talk over a whisper while on the water, and I don't cuss much either.

fishing user avatarSpankey reply :

Falling out of the boat while acting like a fool was probably the worse. All was good, didn't break any of my stuff. Didn't loose the fish. Mid summer and was a bit refreshing but won't do that again. In about 7 feet of water. Paper stuff in my wallet get wrecked but that was the worse.

Been there done that! Fishing a marina full of houseboats and turns out there were two older ladies having coffee and cigarettes watching the sunrise sitting on the boat deck. I don’t remember what I said but it was certainly uncouth. backing up homer simpson GIF

Muttering to oneself is underrated.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

• Coming in last in a tournament on one of the lakes I knew better than most , if not all of the other fishermen.

• Any time I get hung in a tree with people around( which is the only time it ever seems to happen! )

• Hooking a trot line and thinking it was a big bass.

• Not putting the plug in the boat once and almost sinking.

• Losing a huge bass and then seeing folks on the bank watching intently  after hearing me yell in frustration.

• And once going bream fishing in the st Johns river with a friend and his dad. Before we had got far I knocked the cricket container over. You can imagine the outcome. Every few minutes would come another reminder. All day ????

Thats about it I think.????

I thought you had to hold them straight with the tail fanned out. Turns out you can collapse the tail!

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Left the house at 3 AM to go to the Rappahannock River for a club tournament and while sitting in line with other boaters waiting to hit the ramp one of the other boaters walked up to me and said, "Sir, you are dragging something behind your boat."

When I walked to the back of the boat there was my orange extension cord that I used to charge the batteries. It had been torn in half. I had forgotten to unplug it from the boat and I dragged it 25 miles to the ramp. I keep it wrapped around the rear cleat when parked and charging the batteries so there was no damage to the Ranger.

When I got home I looked for damage to my garage door and house but nothing I could see other than the remaining part of the orange extension cord in the driveway.

Felt like a real dummy but now I always unplug the extension cord when I leave home.

As a little boy, my dad taught me to never brag.

Fast forward over 50 years, my old boss at Bass Pro Shops in Kodak, TN (Sevierville) quit to become a trout guide in the Smokey Mountains. He invited me to go on a trip. Johnny warned me about how slick the rocks were. I replied "I've been wading for trout and smallies for over 40 years and I've never fell in!" I promptly took about two steps and decided to lay down in the river!

Dad, I'm done bragging, lesson learned.

That's ok, when I started pitching jigs for the first time, one came flying back at me like a bullet, time slowed down, and I reached out and caught it. That was a fair amount of blood and shame.

Arrived at the boat ramp early one morning to do a bit of dock talk with the 20 - 30 tournament fellas I know. Had all my gear laying in the bed of the truck waiting on my bud with his boat. Thirty minutes or so later here comes my fishing partner with no boat in tow. He had apparently thought we were fishing in my boat. We still haven't lived that incident down. I'm very thankful we weren't fishing in the tournament.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

Few years ago I had 3 new custom bucktail jigs with me and wanted to give them a shot.  I tie on first one and cast it only to watch it fly away due to a poor tie..( I guess?  I have no idea why, actually).  I tie on 2nd one and throw straight into a tree.  Way up there.  Couldn't get down.  Still there mocking me to this day.  Well....heck....tie on THIRD one.  Cut mainline instead of tag and throw it over the side.  3 new jigs.  Not one successful cast.  All 3 gone in less than 10 minutes.

Wasn’t really embarrassing for me as much as just a funny moment. When I used to guide on Georgian Bay for lake trout and salmon mainly, I had the privilege of being used in the filming of a fishing show once. Show was called “Full Contact Fishing”, hosted by Chris King, a former NHLer. He mostly took out other hockey players, and sports figures, and for my day we it was me, him, the cameraman and #88, Eric Lindros. It was a fantastic morning, we filmed the entire 1/2 hour show in only 2 hours, the fishing was so good, with multiple double headers. At one point, a fish hooked up, so I handed the rod to Chris at the stern to fight it, and hustled to the bow to get out of the way of the cameraman, as well as get the net. Eric was lounging on the front deck in the sun, and in my way by I tripped on the camera case and laid a full on body check right into Eric. Of course, me being 165lbs soaking wet and he being a 200+lb NHL superstar, there wasn’t much damage done ????. But the whole thing was caught on camera and the guys even put it in the show. You can even look it up on YouTube, my one and only check on a real hockey player! I do play hockey all year, but it’s mostly old guys with no contact.

fishing user avatarLogan S reply :

When I was 17 I went on the first of many annual trips to a chain of lakes in Canada with a group of guys from my club.  It was my first big, long distance fishing trip.  The day we were leaving I was really hyped up to go, hooked the boat up early and basically paced around till it was time to go (we were leaving mid-afternoon).  I loaded up my truck and tinkered with some tackle in the boat for a while until I just decided head to the meeting spot early....Guys were always early.  So I do that and then get to the meeting spot and no one is there yet, but whatever I'm a little extra early....

It gets to the actual meeting time and still no one there so I call the guy that lived closest to the meeting spot to ask where everyone was....And he says, "What are you talking about?  It's Friday, we leave tomorrow....."  Yep, I was an entire day early ????.  As a teenager trying to be 'cool' in a group of more experienced fisherman, it was pretty embarrassing - Though they were good sports about it, giving me just enough flak to stay funny.

It's been 16 or 17 years now since that screw up and if I'm ever the first guy to the ramp in the morning one of those guys will still hit me with, "You've been here since yesterday haven't you?" Or something similar ????

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

I've relayed this one before, but it applies. It still makes me feel quite stupid.

Boat would not start when my dad and I got ready to leave a spot. We looked the usual connections over and couldn't find anything. We got a tow back to the ramp and I took it home where I looked it over many times and was just about to take it to a mechanic. My dad called me out of the blue and told me to go check the kill switch. That was it. I didn't use the boat for 6 months or more. I wasn't wearing the kill switch so I don't know how it happened and that's why it didn't occur to me. It's the old mechanic's adage "Start with the simplest, cheapest fix, not the most expensive".

My dad thought something was wrong with the outboard on his pontoon once. It wouldn't get up on plane all day. Finally figured out he was dragging a 20 lb. anchor.

fishing user avatarPhishLI reply :

This didn't happen while fishing, but it's fishing related.

I'm full swing to the 10th power into bass fishing again, but I took a looong break from it. Many years. The first time I met my soon to be son in law at a family BBQ he brought up that he loves bass fishing. I was instantly stoked. He couldn't shut me up. I was serious as a kid and still had all of my old gear safely stashed away because I always knew the day would come again. When I say old I mean Daiwa spinners from the late 70s. He offered to take me out on his boat to his honey hole the following weekend, but I had to decline. In that moment I made up my mind that I was going to fish with the exact setup I caught my last fish on before I stopped. I was on a mission. This meant a tear down and lube on my old Daiwa 1000C reel and a new guide on the 5'10" M Ugly Stik. That took a few weeks to get to.

When the gear was ready I was was pumped. I ran up to a local spot with it for some practice. Everything was just as I remembered it. Muscle memory kicked in instantly and it was like I'd never stopped. Old timers might remember that the Daiwa 1000C had a clicking anti reverse when it was engaged. Every crank of the handle and the reel was clicking away like a baseball card in bicycle spokes. Perfectly normal back in the day and just perfectly fine as far as I knew at that moment.

I scheduled an outing with my son in law for the following weekend, but I decided that I needed another setup at the 11th hour. I ran up to a shop and grabbed another rod and a ABU Card10 spinner and more line. When i got home I ran in, mounted the reel on the rod and proceeded to spool it up. Weeeeee! But there was a problem. It didn't click when I wound it! It's busted! They sold me junk! I have to drive back there! I'm gonna be late! Doh!

I pulled up to the place and I'm unhappy but I'm composed. I just want to get a replacement that isn't broken and be on my way. So I wait on line. When it's my turn I hand over the reel and explain that it's defective. The two guys behind the counter examine the reel then tell me that it's perfectly fine. My blood pressure rises instantly! Then I say, in my angry guy not trying to seem angry voice " Then why isn't it clicking when I crank it?" The two guys behind the counter briefly looked at each other, then turned and stared at me in amazement. One of them turned out to be the owner. He was nice about it. He asked me how long it was since I'd last fished, so I told him. He went on to explain that things had changed since then and reels now have something called "silent anti reverse". I felt that odd cold feeling come over me. I turned around to steal a glance at the people in line behind me. Each pair of eyes met mine in unison. One guy looked down and slightly shook his head. So there I was. I was "That Guy". I apologized and bolted outta there with my perfectly fine new reel. Once I got in my truck I laughed hysterically at what a fool I am. Oh brother...

In my haste, I didn't securely tie my boat to the dock after launching.  It was a good 20' away when I returned after parking.  Thankfully, it was the summer so I stripped down to my undies and went for a swim.

I also fell out of my boat once.  We were fishing a marina and just had gone under a catwalk.  In a rush to get the first cast, I did not put my butt seat back in.  When I leaned back, I stumbled and fell out.  Once again, it was the summer so I just kept fishing.

1. Getting a backlash while teaching someone how to use a baitcaster.

2. Dropping your rods by accident while walking.

3. Fishing a public park pond and accidentally hitting some innocent kid watching you fish with your jig while trying to cast. (True story)

4. Slipping on Mud near the bank.

5. Hooking a snapping turtle and having 5+ people surround you watching.

fishing user avatarHillbilly Bennett reply :

In my teenage days I would Take my dad’s boat to go fish my local lake when he had to work and couldn’t go with me. He has always been super meticulous and incredibly OCD about cleaning his rig. On this particular day he had washed and waxed the bottom of the fiberglass hull and decided that it would be a good idea to take the bunk rails off of the trailer one at a time and wax the parts of the hull that sat on the rails. Fast forward to the ramp, I’ve unhooked the boat from the trailer and I’m backing down the incline to in the water when the boat suddenly breaks loose and starts sliding down the trailer a good 20 yards from the water. I gunned the truck in an effort to keep the boat from landing right in the middle of the ramp. I managed to launch it doing about 30 mph in reverse and only scraped about a 6 inch section on the front of the hull on the ramp but water swamped the back of the boat and the speed at which I hit the water sent the boat about 50 yards from the ramp. Luckily it was summer and I was able to swim out and climb in the boat. Dad wasn’t happy with my explanation of what happened until he went fishing the next day and did the same exact thing. Needless to say he never waxed the hull that well again.

All I can think of in my short fishing career is leaving both of my rods at my fishing spot last summer. I walked back to my truck without them. I guess I was too impressed with the sunset.

I jogged past two guys and breathlessly asked them not to pick up the grey backpack "in the tree back there" that I stashed so I could run. They're like, "huh?" Had to run all the way back before it got dark and the mountain lions came out to play.

I once cast in front of someone I was trying to impress - a girl. I tied on a spinner bait and my knot failed or something and that sucker flew out into the lake. "I meant to do that." Good long cast without all that silly fishing line to slow it down!

I've fallen down too many times to count. It's good for a laugh in my videos.

Nah, all you gotta do is hammer down on the throttle and it’ll run out the back! Just make sure to have a plan when you come off pad

When I did it the boat wouldn't go fast enough to drain.

Another of many:  Launching my boat without taking the tie down straps off.

Mine's similar to #1.

I few years back my family took a vacation to the Yellowstone area and I was pumped to fly fish for trout. I really wanted to catch some big brown trout but where we stayed the first few days I only caught a rainbow and a couple cutties. For the last night of the trip we stayed at cabin in Wyoming really close to the Snake River. I only got a couple hours of fishing in before dark but I kept getting bites. Like I'd get big fish after big fish to slurp my dry fly, I'd set the hook, fight it for 5-10 seconds, and they'd always get off. I fished until almost pitch black and felt defeated. As I went to secure my fly to the hook keeper I realized the hook was broke right in the middle of the bend... I must've snapped it off on the rocks during one of my back-casts. Have yet to get over that one.

I went with a buddy on his “new” used boat. I backed it down the ramp and when I pulled up, the front of the trailer went with the truck while the back half stayed in the water. The only things holding his trailer together were the straps on his boat.

Forgot the power poles down and thought my motor was broken when I couldn't get on plane!

Forgot to turn the kill switch to on. Spent 2 hours diagnosing the motor at the ramp because it wouldn't start. Everyone just stared as they put theirs in the water!

going from 60 to zero in three seconds as I ran up on a shallow mud bank and got stuck within view of at least 4-5 other bass boats... It was literally my first time on the water in my first bass boat... Let's just say, a big lesson was learned that day in regards to boaters safety :)

I watched a guy do that from the bank once on the Delta (not a bass boat). Dude comes screaming by then suddenly turns right towards me. I'm like what the...? Thought he was messing with me, but I think he saw the sandbar at the last second. Boom, stopped instantly. Then I heard a loud single expletive. :)

He sat out there waiting for tide to change and I kept fishing, yelled back and forth a few times see if he was okay. He got out and dragged it around until another boat helped him. That one was a bass boat.

You gotta know the delta and pay attention.

I'm really good at forgetting to set the brakes etc on new reels and casting like they're ready to go,  but only when someone else is with me.  And of course,  the plug thing

I just about did this same thing this spring on Chickamagua when I was running to the marina we were staying at. The lake was at winter pool and I though I was in the creek channel, which was only like 5 feet at its deepest, as I was Heading toward Island Cove when I saw a bunch of birds standing In 6 inches of water about 40 yards in front of me. Had to whip it around in a hurry or I’d have been calling Tow Boat US to pull me off of the shoal. Waaaay to close to comfort.

If you’ve never been grounded on chickamauga then you haven’t fished it much

I was throwing a brand new lipless crank bait and the thing flew off across the lake and almost hit a lady on the other side sitting on a bench.   I had to play it off and looked around acting like I had no idea where it came from. :(

Cut my finesse rod in half as it was laying behind me while casting an S-Waver 168.

Once showed my now fiancee, then girlfriend of a few months, how strong an Ugly Stik is.  I proceeded to bend it and then break it in half.

Fished all day for some eats off Tybee Island, caught one 26" redfish.  Proudly pulled it out the cooler to put it on the measuring board and show my buddy, who got a goose egg, my fish tacos.  She flopped right off the board and swam away.

I did that with my first cast with a new rig a couple months ago. Blew it up so bad I had to cut it out. Spool full of brand new fluoro, too. I guess I can take some small comfort from the fact that nobody saw it but me.
