Is it even worth it? 2024

fishing user avatarRMax reply :

This Saturday I have a little bit of time.  Air temperature was 70 a few days ago.  Now, its barely hitting 50.  On Saturday, its going to be a high of 50 degrees with a lot of rain.  Is it even worth it to try and fish?  I highly doubt my chances of success.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Weather conditions only give us a rough estimate, you never know until you kick some tires.

fishing user avatarMaster Bait'r reply :

Dude.  Just because you aren't trying to have a baby doesn't mean it isn't worth it to go through the motions ?

Fishing is is better than not fishing.  Always.  Catching is even better but hey not every scratch ticket is a winner haha

Very true.  However, that feeling of being cold is my least favorite feeling. My favorite feeling is hooking up to a fish.  I think I am going to go, since I wasn't able to last weekend.

fishing user avatarNorthwestBasser reply :

As long as you have raingear, it's worth it! The only thing that will keep me home is high winds. Fish still bite when the air temp is cool, and sometimes I've found the action to be better with some rain!

Sometimes youve got got to go through hell to get to heaven, and in this case it's a prerequisite!  Bundle up and you'll be fine!

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

I am going tomorrow morning.

Water temp is 45

Air temp will be about the same.

At a minimum I figure I will learn something......and may get lucky!

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

I actually faced similar conditions pretty recently and did much better than I thought I would. It was pretty much like you said, about 70 and sunny a few days earlier in the week, then friday to saturday it dropped to the mid 40's and was drizzling rain. I was pretty miserable while on the water saturday but the fish were still biting. Ended up getting 5 before calling it quits due to my hands getting numb.

Sometimes this is more relevant than ANY weather condition.  Learn to combat it or settle for fishing only on the few days a year that weather suits your preference.

If weather were the main factor no one would ice fish!!

fishing user avatarYeajray231 reply :

I don't think the baby analogy was the best comparison lol. Ya better be careful with all that bud.

If you love fishing like I do, you'll go whenever you can and try your hardest regardless of conditions (within reason)

fishing user avatarkcdinkerz reply :

Some of my biggest catches have been on horrible days. If it's not a thunderstorm and I get a chance I'm heading out lol.

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

I haven't caught a good fish on a nice day since about 2013.

Get out there.

fishing user avatarSki213 reply :

Wear the right gear and go. Just don't go out there thinking you have no chance.

First off you absolutely can catch fish in those conditions. Might be a tougher bite, you might be surprised though. Secondly, although I don't fully understand why, confidence or lack of confidence seems to really make a big difference in success both fishing and life in general. Don't think there's no way you can catch one or you're about guaranteeing you won't.

You might go freeze your butt off and get humbled or you might not. One thing you can count on is that the only chance you have to catch a fish on Saturday is to get a lure in the water.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Regardless of the conditions, if you're not enjoying yourself, what's the point exactly ?

Bad weather has a way of becoming a non-factor when I'm using the net a bunch.

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

fishing user avatarCoBass reply :

The best way to guarantee you won't catch any fish is to not go fishing. Fifty degrees with a little rain isn't really that cold. My biggest bass last year was caught during a snowstorm.

fishing user avatarScarborough817 reply :

do you know what i would give to be able to fish right now even in that weather

fishing user avatarRPreeb reply :

While not exactly an authority on the subject, my grandmother always told me that her mother never considered going fishing except on rainy days.  I don't know with certainty what she might have been fishing for, but my first "grown-up" rod and reel was her hand-me-down rig, and it included an ancient redhead Bass-O-Reno casting plug.  That was in west central Wisconsin, and it was purely anecdotal, so take it for what it's worth.  I've had good days when it was deeply overcast or with showers or drizzle, but never had any luck when much wind was blowing.

It's funny how we all have our don't like to fish times. Some of my best days have been windy. Went out a few weeks ago. 15-20 mph sustained winds with 30 mph gusts. Caught a bunch of fish. Talked to someone else who fishes the lake I fished regularly, as in he's been fishing it for 20 years, and he said they were the first bass he'd heard about anyone getting this spring. Now, you're more likely to see me at the lake the more windy it is.

fishing user avatarHawkeye21 reply :

It's not always worth it.  Yesterday I would've been better off staying at work.  I got beat up taking my kayak out.  Was cold and too windy.  Ended up bending my paddle fighting the wind and current while trying to get out of a tree.  Only managed one small fish and zero other bites.

Yea it's weird I used to love fishing sunny days with slick calm water, and hated even the slightest wind. But now it's those 15mph overcast days with impending rain that get me excited. Of course if I'm fishing out of my kayak I have to be reasonable. Whitecaps will send me home just because effectively moving around looking for fish becomes nearly impossible.

These are wise words. The attitude you carry with you Is important to success.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

Go! If you are free to pick your days, then you have that luxury. Otherwise... Go!

If you are uncomfortable it's easier to lose heart and not put the effort in to find biters. You may have to adjust expectations some. Ok with putting in a tough day and not catching? If not, it might be a good day for honey-do's. But you may also put something together that will change your outlook on cold days forever.

but see the LM rolling into river......just a week or 2 away from spawn

I'm retired military which leaves me a lot of time to fish, if I were only able to fish one or two days a week I would fish every day I could.  Severe thunderstorms and hunting sometimes gets in the way of my fishing, but not much else.

Who needs fish??

Did you see that osprey crash into the drink, hear the raucous rattle of a feisty kingfisher,

see Canada geese passing overhead, hear a barred owl toward day's end?

Never put some lowly fish on a pedestal, lest we forget what really makes our day     :D

I was pretty happy to see some ducks and geese, along with a ton of little swallows.  However, when the rain hit skin, it felt like ice.  So I don't know if it was totally worth it, although it was nice to take the casting drug.  Its better to try and not succeed than to not try at all, you know?

Its definitely worth it google cold water fishing baits and get on the water, here in Georgia the water never freezes over so I fish trough the winter and catch fish.

Yeah, the problem was the amount of bad conditions stacked onto one another.  I left my bottom contact rod at home because it was too windy for bottom baits and then, since it was sunny the previous three weeks, the weeds were so thick I could only throw swim jigs.  I also didn't have any super bright trailers so I went with blue.  Water was pitch black with sediment by the way.  The other lake I tried would've worked but the other guy I was with didn't want to fish it so we went to the black lake.

wow! tough conditions if the water was clear I bet you would of caught a few, but in the case of minor cold fronts with mild or slightly heavy rain, as long as the wind is safe, I would fish these condition, don't let this experience keep you from the water. Some of my biggest bass have been on days similar to yours, on swimbaits. Plus there is some appeal to getting out on the water in tough conditions, its always a grind, but definitely worth it.

99% of the time I agree with that.  There are some occasions where it's not.  I don't regret going out last week on my afternoon off but it was a bad experience.  I was close to going over in my kayak and bent my paddle so not great.

It's definitely not always worth it.    I don't mind cold, and I don't mind wind, and I don't mind rain ... but put 2 of those 3 together and I'll probably take a pass, and put 3 together and I would rather do just about anything rather than go fishing in that.    In response to the argument that the fish will be biting in those conditions, my response is "I don't care".

...Then you probably wouldn't have had any fun fishing in 20-30 mile an hour sustained winds with gusts into the fourtys blowing freezing rain that froze on my coat in temperatures around 25 degrees, which also happened to be the day when I caught a four and a five pounder, plus 30something other bass on jerkbaits in a four hour trip.;)
