I’m looking for someone to guide me in the right direction. Is there a professional angler rather currently fishing or not, that really breaks down what they do in the seasons with the baits they use and what they target. Doesn’t have to be in one article or book but if you google them it will tell you everything they really do

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

YouTube has some great videos but most are to short to learn anything!

Greg Hackney's videos are some of the best & most are 15 minutes plus.

fishing user avatarBassWhole! reply :

I like the way these guys cover material and their approach to fishing in no particular order, Larry Nixon, Greg Hackney, Marty Stone, Tim Horton, Aaron Martin.

fishing user avatarGoneFishingLTN reply :

I’m mainly looking for one specific person it can be older articles but just a ton of info from in person and how they fish

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Hank writes for us and we have TONS of his articles. Check it out!

David Dudley does pretty good also. Brings you through his whole process of breaking down the lake on the water.

If you want painstaking detail of every aspect of the technique, AMart is your guy.

fishing user avatarJ.Vincent reply :

Al Linder .... He has written a ton of great information and books and also has a web page called angling edge. You can watch 8 years of fishing shows right through the "watch episodes" section at angling edge.com. If I was trying to fast track my knowledge I would watch every episode he has about Bass and then I would read his books about Advanved bass strategies. Also consider Brandon Palanuik, Kevin Van Dam, Michael Iaconelli or even Mark Menendez.....All of these anglers are good at presenting clear and concise information.....but if you want too much information than check out Aaron Martens. Good Luck !

fishing user avatarbowhunter63 reply :

Larry Nixon has his Bass Class on YouTube. A little dated but solid info for sure. Tatical Basin really breaks it down to.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I would only make one suggestion!

Start with someone who knows your local waters first & then expand.

fishing user avatarDens228 reply :

I don't know if they are pro's, but I second the Tacticalbassin video's on Youtube.

I agree with Tacticalbassin for some good info

I love how he can change direction mid sentence.

fishing user avatarGoneFishingLTN reply :

These have all been great suggestions and I want to thank everyone for helping. Only thing is I guess what I'm asking doesn't exist or people don't want to share it lol. What I'm asking again to clarify is one specific person that may have retired or may still fish that says during pre-spawn he has this tied on with this pound  test/rod and targets these areas, So on through all the seasons like spawn/summer etc.
I do watch all these people you've suggested and they are great for info but none of them really have a written blog/book about what they've done in great detail. Not really trying to learn more about baits or techniques just how a person that has fished for a living has become successful in detail in the style of their fishing

fishing user avatarTroy85 reply :

Mike Iaconelli wrote Fishing on the Edge.  Its about his rise to Elites and winning the Classic. He talks a lot about how he made connections in the fishing industry and how he advanced to the elites thru the BASS Nation.

Yeah, that information is out there, but I am not aware of any one angler who has compiled it that way in that detail.

Is this just a research curiosity thing? Or do you think this will serve as some sort of road map? Cause it won't.

TacticalBassin is the best. No secrets, they will tell you everything.

fishing user avatarThe Short Fisherman reply :

Search up Bama Bass on youtube. He isn't a pro but he catches 7+ pounders regularly and gives lots of tips.

fishing user avatarPhishLI reply :

Some youtube options that tend to cover some of the things you're interested in.

Tactical Bassin.

Great info, but I can't use most of it. The majority of our water here is shallow and weed-choked. No canyon lakes or deltas. I have practically zero opportinity to throw crankbaits or open hook presentations that dive much deeper than 2 feet save for a few difficult, or difficult to reach, or restricted lakes. Still, I never miss a vid. Very detailed.

FishtheMoment

This guy is big on graphing lakes, Navionics, and providing tons of data with a mind toward fishing high percentage spots. I'm not saying he's the best, but I haven't found info this in depth. Check out his latest vid on his catch rates per lure type over the past year. It's broken down into weight of fish caught and season. Definitely give this guy a look. Tennessee

Milliken Fishing

Skip the ice fishing vids unless you like ice fishing. Occasionally he'll take time out for specific tips in the clickbait titled ones.  However, when he takes the time to do actual technique vids he's very specific. I fish like he fishes, so I watch. Check out his recent vid on the Alabama rig. Mostly fishes Nebraska but travels plenty. Up north and down to the Ozarks

Brain Latimer

Most vids will include, at one point, real, very useful info regarding technique. He fishes the Carolinas and is a FLW pro.

If you're interested in swimbaits check out KeepingItReelFishing. He doesn't post vids often, but when he does they're good. They go long. He speaks calmly, and provides details. He fishes New Jersey.

YouTubeFISHINGVIDS

This dude is chill and always describes the hows, whats, and whys about how he's fishing. Mostly the northeast.

There are more of course. I tend to pay attention to cadence and rod action when I'm watching. I'm always looking for different twists, so I watch.

The Linder's have been in the business 30-40 years? They have articles and DVD's with this info you're looking for. I'm willing to bet everyone that has been mentioned has this info you're looking for. It may not be all in one video or article, but they've done it. You may have to take notes and compile this info to get exactly what you need but it's there.

My curiosity is getting the best of me, does it have to be from only one angler, or can it be this is what Ike uses during pre-spawn, this is what Hackney uses during the spawn, and so on? If from only one why only one?

fishing user avatarFishstalker001 reply :

I suggest learning from a Pro that fishes the same style you like to fish. All these guys can catch fish. For example, if you like to throw frogs, follow a pro how excels with a frog. If you like to power fish, follow a power fisherman. Greg Hackney and KVD would be examples of the above. Bottom line, improve on the styles you personally like to fish. Once you get comfortable with those, expand into new stuff.

If you're looking for one place to go for specific info, take a look at bassuniversity.com as well.  They charge a monthly subscription, but they also have their entire library broken down by either specific topics (baits / seasonal pattern /etc) or by specific anglers if there's one person you want to get information from.

FishtheMoment (Jon Shultz) and Flukemaster (Gene) on youtube are about two of the best at breaking things down into simple terms so that the common person or beginner can understand... I'd start there.

GoneFishing, there are videos you can purchase where the pros share information, suggestions and secrets. You may find then on eBay or Amazon as I do not believe BPS carries them any longer.

Hank Parker, Ike, Woo Daves, Denny Brauer, Gerald Swindle, Timmy Horton and many others come to mind as pros who will share information in videos.

And check out Woo's web page for his list of topics he discusses. http://woodaves.com/

The pros are busy now getting ready for their tournament trails and I doubt they will be able to answer your email.

How about you do something for yourself? Read - Read - Read - and Read some more. Subscribe to Bass Master Magazine, Bass Times, and Bass Angler Magazine (BAM) for starters and read what the pros pen about tackle, baits and presentations. And watch the YouTube videos. Maybe you can find a few about fishing Iowa.

Remember, to be specific about what you are asking covers the entire world and it is impossible to find what you are looking for in one book or in a pill. Too many variables to give you a "sure fire" answer that will allow you to catch a bass on every cast.

Now go out there every day and start experimenting. ;)

fishing user avatarBassWhole! reply :

So we are looking for something like the Truman Show for one of the Bass pros?

Those Scott Martin early morning videos are entertaining, but not sure it will help anyone's fishing, at least it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who can't function before caffeine.

I was actually poking fun that EVERY lure matt uses on that channel he describes as "deadly" or that it "flat out catches fish" its just funny. But yeah,  he can fish bro.   So can Tim.  Hell, tim little has had the world record for a spot.

fishing user avatarBrad Reid reply :

A good topic! Most pro bass anglers give us liberal amounts of detailed information so at least a fun approach might have been to list which among them are "stealthy, sneaky, bas****s?" Ha! But, all kidding aside, it made me wonder if any anglers on the various trails are known for being super secretive.

My guess is it could be that some of the biggest names with big sponsorships might have a secret bait for a single season. But, the sponsor is going to want to get whatever that is to the market very quickly if it proves to be a winner.

Well, back to some ideas.

Tactical Bassin by a big margin in my book as #1. Tim and Matt not only cover things in much greater depth and detail, their topic range is also much wider. Watch Tim take a spinning rod and go fish a stock tank from the bank, for example. Or, the two of them fishing float-n-fly. All kidding aside, if watching YouTube Videos is just about getting better at fishing, not pranks and antics, these guys should have > 1,000,000 subscribers.

Fish the Moment, a new entrant for me, a young man giving absolutely granular explanations of the how, when and where to find, then approach fish, then catch them.

Hank Parker would be one who, with all of this information, the ever-growing knowledge base, helps anglers stay on target, reminds us of the essentials and the inviolable rules of bass fishing. Without someone helping us stay focused, we'd have to use large luggage to carry our lures and plastics we'd have so many,  bringing out dozens of rods for the endless fine-tuned presentations. Hank, and a few other experienced veterans, keep us pointed to true north.

Brad

On TV, I used to have the Fish World channel, but it was switched for a Hunting and Fishing channel and I canceled cause it was 90% about hunting. But some quality series:

  • Strike King series - glorified 30 minutes commercial with KVD, Zona and a bunch of others Pros
  • Buccaneers and Bones (non-bass related)
  • The Hunt For Monster Bass with Ott Defoe - huge BPS commercial but Ott breaks it down.

Pro bass anglers who make a living bass fishing by fishing tournaments, guiding and promoting their sponsors will only tell you what every others pro already knows.

If you are looking for detailed unbiased information simply ask specific questions on lures and presentation on this site, lots of expert knowledge available at your finger tips.

Well @GoneFishingLTN all the previous posts have a weath of sources with the information you are seeking. But I’m gonna be a homer and say Glenn May, who has provided all of us with this site.  Bass Resource, as @WRB mentioned give one the ability to access every members collective knowledge, past, present, and in some cases the future.

One of kvd's books is basically a seasonal guide. I forget which one. There is 1138 results on Amazon if you search seasonal patterns for bass fishing also.

fishing user avatarBass Junke reply :

I just decided to become a serious bass fisherman last year, it was my wife's idea for us to spend time together, which meant it was just for the 2 of us. I needed to learn how to fish on my own. I started watching the Flukemaster and learned tons. At the end of his vids he would mention Bass Resource. I started reading articles and learned even more. Finally I discovered the forums. Zowie! The guys in this forum are amazing. I am not trying to butter anybody up or get brownie points. Why is the advice from a "pro" better than a guy that all he has been doing is fishing for the pass 50- 70 years? I have been trying to contribute to this forum by asking some questions, sparking some interesting chatter, but every question I have has already been answered somewhere here. Some of the folks on this site have taught me so much I would be more "starstruck" meeting one of you guys that a actual pro angler. I have learned more from this forum than all other resources combined. Want to learn to fish? Look no further all the info is right here in these forums. If you can come up with a question that has not already been answered (I can't), just ask you will get an answer.

fishing user avatarBass Junke reply :

Let us not forget this is coveted information. 20 or 30 years ago the idea of strangers sharing fishing secrets might have been frowned on by most serious anglers. " Don't tell me boy you just showed them yanks the Texas rig. Go help your mamma in the kitchen"

While a lot the guys on this site have been fishing for the past 25 or 30 years I have spent those years studying, training, and teaching martial arts. In that world information is also coveted, you just don't go around teaching total strangers how to kill people. The reasons each group is reluctant to offer up knowledge are different but my point is this: Even if you found a pro angler who was willing to advise or respond to an email, would he be as candid or as thorough or as nice. I have read some pretty comical posts where I would have expected some friendly jokes and jibes. Sure there is some joking but usually it is just honest helpful answers from hundreds of fellow anglers that are here only to share knowledge, stories and experiences. I want to thank everyone here for getting me through the winter and teaching me so much along the way but here in southern Mass we have open water and I'm going fishing.

fishing user avatarfrogflogger reply :

The one tournament angler who has helped me more than any other is Rick Clunn - he fishes  basic lures and pays attention to what's going on around him.
