Inventions etc 2024

fishing user avatarBD reply :

Okay, so since I am never going to do anything with my thoughts/inventions, I will post a couple of ideas I have had recently and still yet to have seen on the market.

Have you guys ever come up with an invention? Did you try and get someone to listen? Did you actually do something with it? etc. etc.

One invention is for reminding about the drain plug. I have been in countless situations with my friends where had I not said anything about the plug, we would/could have been in trouble. One time the drain plug was actually forgotten but we remembered before we unhooked from the trailer completely.

You could have a water resistant/water proof plug that at the end of that drain plug there was a button that emitted a noise, chirp, beep etc. When you and your friend, or alone, went to check the plug, you would just push the button and it would emit a beep. It would be an audible cue to everyone there that the plug is in. The plug would not need to be more than say 10 ft water resistant and the battery used could be a NiMH or something like this, that would last for a VERY long time. The drain on the battery from a simple noise would be NOTHING. The as seen on tv slogan would be "You hear the beep, it's okay to get into the seat" ;D

I have also thought about making the drain plug even easier to use. Most I have seen have that t handle that you screw in. Why not have the plug's top be like our car gas knobs? Those are easy on the hands, easy to screw in, and maybe you get the click click sound once the plug is secured? Even the gasket on a drain plug (some I have seen had a little ring but I wouldn't call that a gasket by any stretch) could have better gaskets IMHO.

Taking this a step further, (but all older boats would have to be retro-fitted is a "drawback") new boats have a 'drain plug' light on the dash like a seat belt light on car dashes. It would only come on, if the magnets were not joined together, from the plug to the boat etc. Magnets that are very strong can and do stay adjoined even underwater. (again the plug usually only sits  3 ft in the water anyways)

This would not cost manufacturers anything to add a light to the dash, and they could even tap into an already ran circuit.

Another invention I have is for bullet weights to actually have encased in the lead, rattles. It could be in the mold, a place to have the plexi-glass that would house the rattles, before being pressed as a final product. I Photoshopped a design for this but can't get anyone to reply/read the emails/listen etc.

We probably all have used rattles in worms/craws etc, but IMHO, those rattles fall out/don't stay inside the plastics well especially after catching one fish! It the bullet weight itself already has the pellets in there, no need for those inserts, etc. You could go as far as painting (or buying the weights) already painted your favorite color too. (I.E. black rattled 1/4 oz weight t-rigged on a black 10in. power worm)

I have these ideas all the time and really wish I could get with developers, R and D companies etc. Oh well I guess. ::)

I like the idea of the drain plug dummy light on the dash. As for the weights with the rattles in them, I actually have some that I bought from bass pro. I can't remember who made them though...

I have a whole box full of worm weights that rattle. A bunch of the old Florida Gambler rattling worm weights.

In the late 80's, most scents were spray types but not aerosol propelled.    They got very messy.

I cut the bottom of some 4-5 inch  round tupperware bowls leaving about 4 inches in depth.     I then cut some sponges to fit in the bottom that are about 3/4 in thick.

I took an old tupperware pitcher lid top that had the button to press on top to release the lid so you could pore from the pitcher and used it as my lid.    I also glued another sponge to the top of the lid.

I use a 1/4'' rod that was heated to smooth a small groove for your line to lay on so no sharp edges were present.

I glued one part of the velcro on the bottom and one to my boat carpet, thus it wouldn't move and was very stable.

In principal, you just laid you worm on top of the sponge and press the lid down, and this applied the baitmait juice very easy and fast with no mess ever.

To this day, its one of the easiest methods to apply scents that aren't propelled by aerosols.

Matt.

fishing user avatarBD reply :

I had that bullet weight idea a long time ago. I actually posted hinting about it about a year ago, but couldn't never carry it anywhere. Yes I have now seen those weights too, at that time though, they were not out.

Matt that's actually a great technique. Anyone else????

Being disapointed by the lack of the number of affordable hard swimbaits with good action that had the profile, size  and action that resembled large shad. There weren't any I could find. I set out a couple months ago to make and design my own hard swimbait. Here is a video of the swimbait showing its swiming action that I made a couple of days ago. I really just made it in the begining for my own use but may decide to do something as far as selling the bait at a later time. http://media.putfile.com/swimbait-1

fishing user avatarChris reply :

I think I have had these rattling weights for over 10 years

fishing user avatarFIN-S-R reply :

Working on an Idea for a really deep diving crank, like 30+ Ft deep. The physics will give you a migraine

fishing user avatarBD reply :

Randall, that's awesome!!!

Randall, I'd be interested in buying one of those from you if you make any more. The action of that bait is absolutely awesome! I kept waiting for a hog to explode on that bait during the whole video! Have you thought about adding some weight to make it go a little deeper? The way it is now would probably trigger some killer topwater strikes!

I have made a slow sinker as well as the floater in the video. I am working on a fast sinker but it presents a few challenges so far and I am about to run out of free time with spring coming up. I think my slow sinker will run around four to five feet on a slow steady retrieve and will probably be the one I use most.

fishing user avatarcraigaria reply :

Man, that bait is gonna put some Varner hawgs on the line for sure! I'm serious about buying one when you get the time to make another. Let me know :)

fishing user avatarNick B reply :

Nice action on that bait Randall

fishing user avatarBass XL reply :

I have always wanted a bullett weight that you could pinch on, and then take off without cutting your line, like from switching from weigheted rig, to a weightless rig. That would be awesome.

Thats called a Water Gremlin Bull Shot. Its just a pinch on splitshot shaped like a bullet sinker.

Here was a brain storm.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I wish some one would invent a heater that fits in inside my Calcutta's that cast aluminum gets really cold this time of the year.

fishing user avatarjustfishin reply :

I have doodled out a few concept rough drawings of a trolling motor that has a prop that is mounted on the front section of the lower unit and is designed to pull the boat through the water vs pushing it with a radical design prop. Basically the same concept as a rear wheel drive vehicle vs a front wheel drive vehicle. I think that in fast water a pulling type prop would be more efficient and user friendly as well as more stable at the foot pedal. I read a article not long ago about a new concept by Volvo Penta--I think--using a new radical design on outboard motors whereas the prop is positioned in front of the lower unit pulling the boat instead of using the physics of the prop pushing the boat.

fishing user avatarBass XL reply :

yeah, but I mean a bullett weight that could still slide.

fishing user avatarBluecraw reply :

Yeah!  Toothpaste bubblegum was my idea, many years ago!!  But it never became popular because they sell it with the toothpaste instead of the candy by the cashier.....oh, are we talking about "fishing" inventions?....sorry.

fishing user avatardink reply :

Bass XL,

There was once a thing called a Speedo-bead.  This same company also made Speedo sinkers.  They had a zig-zag slit in the side of the bead (or weight) that line could be threaded into after a hook or lure was tied (to the line).  They proved to be too bulky and not very practical.

Northland makes a bullet weight with a rubber insert that should do the trick.  It's called a sling shot weight.  Cabela's carries them (page 233 Master Fishing 2007 catalog.

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

Got 2 things currently in the pipeline and am approaching a lure designer for a new type of spinnerbait I've come up with.  Also I've got something going for new for tacklebox system designed for a specific boat type.

But here are a couple of older ideas I've given up on because I don't want to put the effort into them.

Depth Finder Video. Try finding a video out there on the web that shows and explains how these things really work. Something that shows a comparison of what is on the LCD screen to what is actually happening in the water (split screen video). The manuals just don't cut it for the new or average angler.  Basically a split screen video showing actual footage of what is in the water along side what is represented on the fish finder.

RC Boat with Wireless Fish Finder.  Using a RC boat with something like the remote control Hmmingbird RF15 incorporated into it.  Also a small platform on the RC boat to put your worm or jig, and just give a little tug so the lure falls off when you want it to.  You can go under docks, see what is there and drop your lure when you want.  Great for shore fishing who want to get there lures out farther, and also for getting into areas that are too far to get your boat into (or restricted areas).

Senko Repair Kit.  Man those Senkos are expensive and tear so easily.  I thought of using something like that ColdHeat Soldering Tool with 2 adapters specifically made for those Senko type baits.  (I know there is a Wormizer out there but doesn't do what I'm talking about). The image of adapters I envision is shown below.

Home Fish GPS Tracking System.  Watching a Bassmaster tournaments on ESPN2, they track individual fish in real time, even showing the location of the angler as he passed over one of the fish (and they even knew which of the four fish it was). They track each fish by satellite over the course of the tournament to show were it went, the depths, the cover, etc. This is obviously accomplished by a very small GPS tracking device tagged to each fish. So how about a home hand held unit which could track pre-caught bass and placed tags on them. And you would be provided with software for your computer so you can track the movements of each fish over the course of time going through a service of someone like AccuTracking.

It would be Educational and Informational: You could track the movements of bass to see where they are going and holding over the course of time also showing depths. It will help you to see what bass are relating to and at times of the day. You could find new locations and structure that might take someone months to find the traditional methods. So much more can be learned about a particular lake.

It would also be Controversial: Think of the implications in fishing tournaments. Anglers would have to ability to target and catch a specific fish in a tournament. Or even if it was banned in a tournament, they could see where the fish were right before a tournament began (if they couldn't use a handheld unit on the water unit), as long as they have access to the internet through the tracking software.

So, if guys are willing to spend $700 on a device which makes the sound of baitfish (BSX Bisonix), think of what they will spend on something like this?

If anybody uses some of the ideas I've listed, please send me a couple of complementary ones.

I have thought about this as well. Amen!

Books/Magazines/articles/www etc are great information. Telling someone "there's this secondary point out here, where the grass meets some stumps"............uhm you "saw" that on a finder? What did the left to right x37 for example show?  A curve in the screen?  No one has come up with something you can watch and grasp IMHO.

We ALL could really learn so much from a video that is VERY informative, shows a simple finder (an x37 for example), and shows a side by side screen. Have the guy be in scuba gear and cast to him, so he can follow the lure back to the boat........like how we fish. I can read temp's and I have seen shad on a graph, but understanding how a left to right picture on a finder relates to the actual bottom is a whole other thing. I personally would pay 100$ + for someone to make just a finder video only.

fishing user avatarBD reply :

Matter of fact I have a challenge to someone. I have the storage for a huge video on my site. Someone here who can read a graph, make short clips. LBH could edit it into one big video.

I am starting to wonder why this wasn't one of the first things ever sold at bass pro.....I bet because most use the temp and then stumble into fish, the graph played how much into this.....I bet not much.

fishing user avatarTpayneful reply :

Zel, I would love a whole book or video on using a depth finder.  The best articles that I have read about them are on this site but a book or video would be fantastic!

The fish that you see on Bassmasters have a sonar (sound) transmitter on them.  They just have to put a different frequency sound on the four different fish to distinguish between each of them.  To find the fish they have to put at least two microphones in the water and triangulate on the fish.

GPS uses RF (radio frequencies) which cannot penatrate water.  Submarines have to rise to the surface or raise an antenna to talk to the outside world because of this problem.
