"the one that got away" 2024

fishing user avatarGale1980 reply :

how long do you guy's beat yourself up over losing a big bass?? well for me it's till i lose another one lol and today was that day..... i was fishing a rattle bait right before sun up this morning and WHAM! this big old girl about took the rod out of my hand! i wear her down get her right to the boat to lip her then she freaks and peels some drag. so i freak myself and try to flip her in real quick and.....well you know the rest! of course i don't know the exact size but 22-24" and somewhere in the 6-8 lb ballpark :( im sick to my friggin stomach still........

fishing user avatarNine Miler reply :

Yea, it sucks. It doesn't bother me long, though. Think about all of the other things you could be doing instead of missing a trophy fish. That happens to everybody.

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

not much worse in life than that. It takes me a very long time to learn how to deal with it. However, the pain never really goes away, every big bass is like tendinitis.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I can honesty say i remember EVERY big bass i have lost! Takes me a LONG time to cope!

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

It doesn't bother me too much unless it happens during a tournament, then it eats at me the rest of the day and possibly a few more days, depending on what happens at the weigh in.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

If I made an error, I feel it. Bums me out. But some fish get off and I didn't screw up; such is fishing. But I hate screwing up. that's part of being human, but I WISH it were otherwise for some time after.

Yesterday I had a frustrating day. The catching wasn't easy, so I had to capitalize on what I could muster, and I BLEW three out of the four better fish that struck.

>:( >:( >:( :( :( :-/ :-/ ::) :)

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

I'm devastated for about half an hour when I loose a nice fish , then it's on with life, it's only a fish.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

I still think about this almost every day...

fishing user avatarRed Bear reply :

i never seem to forget losing a big fish, it stings for a long time

fishing user avatartholmes reply :

I've developed a built-in "reset button". Miss a big fish? Just hit the button and make the next cast.

Yeah, I wish it never happened, but I'm not gonna spoil a day of fishing worrying about it.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Usually after a few cuss words I have it worked out of my system.

fishing user avatarGale1980 reply :

the biggest reason this stings i guess is because i was fishing with a partner and had a net at hands reach...... just was the first hawg of 2010 and i got worked up lol

fishing user avataroteymc reply :

I usually cuss and scream and break my rod and... Oh, wait that's not me, that's Mike.  (that's just a joke, I like Mike)

fishing user avatarAlex77 reply :

It sucks losing one, but assess the situation, see what you did wrong and learn from it.

fishing user avatarzerofivenismo reply :

I find the nearest rod and go Bo Jackson on it.  Then I craw into the back of the boat and get in the fetal position and weep.  Then tell everyone that I stuck a monster that broke my rod in 5 places.  Cheer up and get back at'em.

fishing user avatarb.Lee reply :

For all those that are interested, we have a LBBA (losing big bass annynomous) helps to learn how to cope losing a big bass. We meet every second and fourth wednesday of every month. Refreshments and donuts provided. Raffle for prizes also. We are here to help ;)

fishing user avatarGale1980 reply :

fishing user avatarMissouribassman95 reply :

No, but maybe a poor knot. Learn to tie a Palomar knot,

it's fool proof.

8-)

fishing user avatarpitchNbass reply :

I've lost me some quality fish for all sorts of reasons, but like someone mentioned if it's my own fault I feel it more than if a bass that simply throws a well set hook or crank or one that snaps me off on some structure that I couldn't avoid.

Me and my buddy were once fishing some jigs in about 20ft of water up a rocky ledge and he sets the hook and says "NICE FISH!" then snap. Few F bombs later, I hook me a good one, pull her in the boat a 8lber with my buddies jig still in her mouth too.

The other day I was fishing and set the hook and snapped my 40lb power pro at my palomar knot with a heavy tube on, then about a second after hook set up comes this huge beautiful bass to throw the hook. All I could do was look and admire then tell myself to check my line more often.

fishing user avatarMatt Fly reply :

I lost a fish in 2008,  2nd day of the 2008 Media Championship on RC first cast into  dropoff into a creek channel with a brush pile sitting on the edge,  20 lb McCoys mean green, 14 inch custom plum, 7' 8" Falcon, Abu 4600c,

I set the hook and the drag went zip zip and the rod went double and she pulled free in the end.

We only took 4  fish to the scale that 2nd day, 14+, we ended up 6th, very nice check, but we didn't miss the new BassCat  and 1st by much

that one will haunt me till I get the bug to go back out and doit again some year.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

The more money at stake, the longer it takes.

fishing user avatarspraycrew reply :

It bothers me alot longer if i don't get to see the fish, then my imagination gets the best of me on the size of it. :)
