Just finished winterizing the boat today. Washed it up and getting ready to wax it for winter storage. (Stays in my garage) I hate this time of year. Oh well, guess I'll start cleaning up my rod and reels and organize my tackle for next spring. Plus, scanning my catalogs to see what other goodies I can order. I think I can make it till next spring. What do you guys think?

I'm planning one more trip for next weekend before I pack it in for the winter and I am definitely dreading it! To top things off, my lights have gone out on my trailer and it looks like I have to replace them completely. At least waiting for spring wont be nearly as bad as missing this past spring through summer being in the middle east. I think that's really going to help me get through this winter. I like to think that there is alot I can still do to learn and get better over the winter.

Hey Tony,
Thanks for your service over seas. I know all real Americans appreciate our servicemen and women. So yes, you will have a much better winter even if there is a lot of bad weather. Gotta be better than the best day over in the middle east.

Thanks Kevin. I can tell you that the saying "absence makes the heart grow fonder" is 100% true when it comes to this great country, our beautiful outdoors and those fantastic fish we chase! Winter will pass quickly!

It's definitely not the weather that is stopping me, it was 28 degrees at launch time for a tourney I fished on the 18th and 19th of Oct. Fished last weekend in 25 mph winds. The last local bass tourney that we have for the year is this coming weekend and it's appropriately called "The Frostbite."

I am starting to get depressed as well. I need to take up a winter sport like Snowboarding. We just had our first sites on snow this year.

Winter is great.
First, get boat ready for next year.
Service rods and reels and set up the rods by type and length.
Take an inventory of line, baits, and tackle and get Christmas list ready.
File all of the articles pulled out of your magazines and file them in your library.
Read, read and read. View your DVDs and videos. Study maps. And picture that five-pounder jumping as it approaches the boat.
Winter can be great!!!!
And by the way, we have the hot side of Lake Anna to fish if we want. Air temperature can be in the 30's and the water temperature will be in the 60's.
If there is a radioactive leak from the nuclear plant on the lake we look for Godzilla.

You must have some kind of fishing in the winter? I know there's at least one river in that state, LOL. I hit Lake Ontario tribs for trout all winter long. Its cold, but its a blast, and easy to do.

I know what you mean. Last year was the latest I ever went fishing up here (Dec 12th). I've been waking up in the morning with temps below freezing lately. I think the hard water will be coming much earlier this year.

Once it starts snowing, I am going to start fIce-fishing for panfish. Sadly I probably won't go again for Bass.

QuoteJust finished winterizing the boat today. What do you guys think?
kevinator, are you located in the northern half of Indiana? I'm in Kansas City and we still have some bigger lakes with water temperatures in the 50s, though the air temperatures are getting into the upper 20s this week for lows with highs in the 40s to 50s. We are at about the same longitude as Bloomington, IN. I would bet the Southern half of Indiana is still in the Fall to late Fall bass season. If you're down there, don't put that boat away.

senile,
I am in the north central part of Indy. I could still fish but with work and other obligations, I figure I should get it done before it gets too cold. I went out last week and caught some small bass but nothing to brag about. And to Sam, thanks for reminding me about the things I can do to keep me occupied in the winter. That always takes up a lot of time. 8-)

I'm with J on this one. I took up fly fishing so I had something to do when the lakes were hard (Ice fishing doesn't keep my attention for very long ). It's funny, when I'm fishing for trout, I can't see myself going back to bass fishing. Once the lakes melt, I'm back on them and can't see myself trout fishing until they freeze again...

Well, if you have tackle in the amount I have then yup, that will be enough for you to make it along through the winter. ;D
If you don 't have as much tackle as I well, unless your boat is Titanic size and your wallet is deep enough to purchase all those goodies then you are in trubble, get a XBOX and lots of games.

What do you mean by "winterize my boat"??? I don't get it ... BTW, I just started wearing long pants again, wore shorts for about the past 6 months. Yeah, this winter thing kind of sucks. I pitty you guys in the north, I have never even seen a frozen lake, closest we get is a thin layer of ice over the mud puddles in the driveway come late January.

I remember posting about the brutal cold last winter, then bitchin' about the heat this past summer. Some of us are never happy are we ?! >
Oh well, I fish up until the bitter end when the ice shows up for the long haul. Got some kayak additions and modifications to do in addition to the normal gear maintenance.
Come February I've about had it.

Yeah Raul, I have enough equipment to sort through to last through a few winters I think. Wife says I have to much but we guys know that there is no such thing as too much fishing equipment. Women don't understand it is an addiction. Got to have all of the new stuff you know.

And Dan K, you are lucky you don't have to deal with the "hard water". I'm a warm water fisherman. (As long as it is above freezing that is)

Oh man....winter is the best fishing for stripers here on the Delta and Forebay. I look forward to it every year. Really all depends on th rain we get, as it does get pretty cold - sometimes down into the teens, but thats nothing a pair of gloves wont cure.

I'll keep fishin' until the water freezes. Then, I'll send a few reels to be cleaned and serviced, clean and organize my tackle boxes, rods and other gear. I'll spend the winter playing my guitar and enjoying an occasional pint of my favorite ale. And watching football, of course.

I am just getting excited here in Virginia. Time to pull out the big boat and chase trophy rockfish (40+ pound fish) in the Chesapeake Bay and out on the Ocean. Bass fishing fills my fishing addiction until winter comes. Can't wait to smell two stroke fumes trolling and have eel slime all over the boat. ;D

Fortunately I go 12 months without a break only change is the target species. Our inshore bite is slow in the winter, but sails are running offshore, Jan-March is I when I do my bass fishing and look for freshies.
Only negative is none of my fishing buddies bass fish, so I'm running solo.

The absolute worst thing about living this far north is the recurring thought of waste. In January I can walk outside and see an RV buried in the snow, go into the garage and see a boat collecting dust, and then into the basement to see a set of golf clubs in mothballs. In July, I see the snowmobile parked under it's cover, and up in the rafters of the garage is my portable ice shanty along with all of that gear.
A guy can survive the winter doldrums, but it sure is expensive having to buy a whole new set of seasonal toys. I'm just looking forward to the day I can have a yard sale for all the winter toys before becoming a snowbird.

I feel so lucky this time of the year since down south we dont winterize we fish more because its finally cooler and we also have a couple of steam plants here that produce warm water discharge or "hot holes" so that even in the coldest weather theres a warm place for active fish. So anyway after you winterize and restring and retie come on down here to NC and lets go bass fishing

As soon as bass fishing really slows down I turn to crappie fishing until the water becomes hard.
The tick of the line and a 12 to 14" crappie lightens the mood and provides good fishing for another month.
When I was younger I used to fish for bass until freeze up, but no more. In Iowa I've caught bass in soft water every month of the year but January.

I have friends where you live that put their boats away also. It must be an awful feeling to see ice forming on the lakes. I'd almost forgotten until you reminded me of the crappy winter weather up there. I left Northern Indiana in 1973 and have enjoyed fishing in the South year around since then. Why not join us down here? The weather is great and the fishing is even better!

QuoteJust finished winterizing the boat today.
I have friends where you live that put their boats away also. It must be an awful feeling to see ice forming on the lakes. QuoteI am starting to get depressed as well. I need to take up a winter sport like Snowboarding. We just had our first sites on snow this year.
How about ice fishing....

Doesn't provide the same thrill as bassin'. My son loves it though and it doesn't offer some fine meals.

And to really cement in what the next 5 months will be like here, it's snowing today . . . . .
But I'm trying to stay positive. I was able to fish and catch some decent fish right up to Thanksgiving last year.
And to help get me through the hard water period, I've decided to make this link my home page.

We are having crazy weather here in Minnesota. Last year by this time it had already snowed numerous times, and this weekend is going to be in the high 50's!
I think I have said "this is my last time out" at least 5 times so far

Agreed. I'm not one for tipups (am not very good at multi tasking) but with a decent flasher, ice fishing doesn't have to be boring. If you are willing to move around and drill the required holes to find/follow the fish, ice fishing can be rather fun. It isn't just sitting on a bucket staring down at a hole (well, not usually anyway).

Between deer, ducks, coyotes, pheasents, and quail, there's a lot to keep me busy around here. Plus there's 2 powerplant lakes within an hour drive so my boat never gets winterized! The bass aren't always biting but white bass and wipers still pull really hard and get you through the winter!

Ever thought about taking up hunting on the off season? I think you will make it! Don't wait on shopping though everyone is offering great deals because sales are low this time of year- and Black Friday is coming up! But... Have no fear...Fishing is always near!
Juicy Joyce over and out.

I think I'm done for the year, Last three trips water temps were around 48 to 49, Three skunks in a row. We have a cold front coming through, supposed to maybe get rain and snow mix, So water temps will be falling even more. :'( I can't seem to get bit no matter what I throw.

I'm done bass fishing for the year. Lakes aren't quite froze yet so walleyes and northerns are still active. I'm not much for ice fishing.

Here in Northern California as the season ends the next is beginning. Its my off season now, but it just means Im getting ready for the new season is beginning. Usually temps dont drop below 48deg water temp. Winter is a great time to fish is California as the lakes are usually free of the shi and pleasure boaters.

I think our high this morning was 25. Years ago I use to let winter get me down, but now I pace myself and use the down-time to inventory tackle and order replacements. I'll also spend some cold evenings going over lake maps and planning trips. I've already planned a couple of four day kayaking treks, one into an area where no motor craft are allowed and I'm really getting stoked for that one. I'll also spend a lot of time on the forums, especially this one, learning new things. As far as information goes, this forum is tops by far. Actually, I'm starting to enjoy winter already.

I cleaned up my canoe and other "on-the-water" equipment and stored it for the winter last week so no more boating for me this year. However, water temps are still around 50 here on the Cumberland plateau in Tennessee so I'm still catching some bass from the bank. I fish nearly every day so depression won't set in until I get skunked 4 or 5 days in a row. I was skunked yesterday, but got two bass today !
