Anyone Else Have This Awful Habit? 2024

fishing user avatarhookingem reply :

So as bad as it is, and I know my parents hate it after paying for braces. I tend to bite the line to cut it when fishing flouro or mono. Anyone have this habit? Still do it? If you broke it how did you do so? I am thinking about starting to wear a lanyard around my neck with nail clippers attached.

fishing user avatarQuitlimpin reply :

I do it constantly. Even carry clippers. Guess old habits are hard to break...

fishing user avatarhookingem reply :

I can't break it! Iv'e been doing it since I saw my dad do it when I was like 8. What an example he is  Ugh.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

I do it!

fishing user avatarhookingem reply :

I need to cut it...no pun intended lol! Cutting 20 pound suffix with your teeth cant be good.

fishing user avatarhookingem reply :

so just seeing the results is what made you stop? I hope I can stop before I notice these results....

fishing user avatarzenyoungkoh reply :

get a sharp scissors. It takes less than 1 sec cutting through a line. U will appreciate the speed n maybe use it instead of ur 5 second tooth

fishing user avatarwisconsin heat reply :

get a pair of nail clippers and clip it on your shirt collar, my front teeth have so many groves it looks like a saw blade. and im only 16 :P

fishing user avatarintheweeds reply :

I use to do this. The way that I stopped was buying nail clippers on a lanyard (just like you are thinking of) and this worked for me. They hang around your neck so you always have them close by. Try it, your teeth will thank you.

fishing user avatarfishinfantatic reply :

Didn't think about a lanyard. I've always kept the clippers in my tacklebox and somehow manage to lose them every other trip. I spend as long looking for them as I do using them.

fishing user avatarguitarkid reply :

get a Gerber Multi tool. it is one hand open/close has a set of pliers for hook removal with a set of cutters at the base of the pliers.

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

When fishing from the bank, I wear a lanyard that has nail clippers and a 3ft tape measure. In the boat, I have both braid scissors and nail clippers right at hand.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Nailclippers work fine and they pack in your pocket real small. I never fish without a pliers in a sheath on my belt, cuts mono and braid....

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

AJ, I'll be sure to punch you in the shoulder next time I see you bite the line off when we go fishing next. I'll shoot you a text today when the rod comes.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Save your teeth, use a siccors or a finger nail trimmer.

Not only are you going to damage your teeth but you are putting dirty water in your mouth.

I used to use my teeth to cut the line but my dentist talked me out of it when I had to get one of my front teeth bonded. ;)

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

Aj, I would try chewing on something when you are fishing. Say sunflower seeds. It would be a lot harder to cut the line with a mouth full of seeds. That way and probably make you pull out clippers.

fishing user avatarIma Bass Ninja reply :

The only problem with a lanyard is that when you bend over to pick somethin up it will hang down and possibly get in the way..I use one of these...Retractable key chain w/ toenail clippers. It hooks to your belt or just to your waist band, its outta the way and the toenail clipper are a bit bigger to give you more cutting power and easier to work with in the cold.

fishing user avatarhookingem reply :

Thanks for all the good ideas I am going to make a legit effort to try and stop doing this! So Woody the punch think sounds like a good idea....

fishing user avatarFish Chris reply :

Man, I have chewed through about 9 million pieces of monofilament in my life. Heck, I'd still be doing it today.....

But about 2 years ago I had some dental work > on my rear teeth (molars). So then, the next time I went to bite through some fishing line, the sharp spot I always used, would not close quite tight enough to cut the darn line ! I was ticked ! Heck, I'd still be cutting line with my teeth today ! Actually, I still try, but I really have to gnaw on it, and take a couple of tries at it.... Whereas before, I could cut 30 lb mono in a split second, first try, every time > faster than you could grab the nail clippers around your neck.

Freaking dentist screwed up my line cutters :(

fishing user avatarSmokeRise1 reply :

Got these in the bargain cave for about $30 a few months ago. They thread right on your belt, they cut braid as well as mono, are always at the ready, slide right back into the sheath when you are done and will save your teeth and your time fumbling for clippers. More expensive then nail clippers or scissors, but neither of these will help you get a lure out of a toothy pickeral or pike's mouth.

Edit. Tried to post an image of "Cabela's Advanced Angler Pro Series Machined Aluminum Pliers" but couldn't.

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

I broke my front tooth when I was young biting line, among other things......I carry 3 pairs of pliers with line cutters with me when I fish, just to make sure I don't do that again!

Jeff

fishing user avatarhookingem reply :

Glad to see im not the only one doing this lol! I am goong to make an effort to stop though, before I have to have a tooth bonded! :/

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

Switch to braid & then you will have to use scissors.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

I have tried to stop as well. Hard thing to do. It is so automatic that I don't even think about it anymore... Maybe this can be a resolution from here on out...

fishing user avatarGangley reply :

I stopped after I broke my second tooth doing it. Scissors were my next aquisition, and they have stayed with me since, whether fishing from bank or boat.

Yup. I went through the "braid is so freaking awesome" stage for a year and did all but my really light fishing with it. I don't have a bunch of rods so the few i had suitable for most of my fishing all had braid. Broke the habit quickly.

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

When I was a kid, like 6 years old, my father had to get his gums cut back. Don't ask, but back in the day when you had problems with your gums, that's what they did. Stupidly, I asked what they had to do and he smiled. The worst sight you ever seen. I learned at a very young age to maintain the chcklets you have.

I carry a Leatherman Micra with me. the scissors are stainless, always sharp and you cant tell it's in your pocket, it's so thin and compact. Light enough that you can put it on a lanyard and it won't feel too bad around your neck.

Line, splitshot, fingernails...

I chew on something when I'm fishing and I never bite the line. :D

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I read a story about a guy trying to chew through heavy shock tippet while he was tarpon fishing. He was trying to hold the line tight between his teeth when it slipped and split his tooth lengthwise. He said the pain was so severe he had to ride all the way back to the marina with his back to the wind. I don't know if it was a true story or not but the thought of it makes my legs weak :o

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

I finally stopped, it took wearing a groove in my tooth and the dentist filling it and me popping that filling out to break the habit.

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

When I was about 12, I watched somebody spit a sliver of tooth into their palm after doing this, so I thankfully never developed the habit. I still cringe when I see people doing this.

fishing user avatarThe Bassinator reply :

After chipping my tooth eight times (non related fishing accidents) I always use pliers with the cutter or nail clippers. Ill bite in a pinch but I just hate the feeling it has on my teeth and sometimes I cant fit the line through the eye of a hook because its flattened too much
