Am I normal? 2024

fishing user avatarGreenGhostMan reply :

My wife is starting to think I have some type of disorder. The early spring of 2016, I was invited to fish a pond. I guess this is where it happened. I had a single small flip top, old school tackle box that was half empty and 2 $20 spinning combos from Wal-mart. In 3-4 hours of fishing, I must have caught 25 bass. From this point forward, bass fishing has been on my mind about 90% of the time that I'm awake. Flash forward a year and I have a fishing kayak, 7 rod setups, 12+ boxes full of lures, several drawers full of soft plastics and accessories out the wazoo. If I'm not clicking thru TW or scrolling thru this forum, I'm scanning google maps in search of a new pond, stream or lake to fish. After an entire day of fishing, I spend the drive home thinking about when and where I can fish next.  I've never been this into something in my entire life. I almost feel guilty at times. Are there other people out there that can relate?  Just want to make sure I'm not the only one...

fishing user avatarS. Sass reply :

No your not "normal" but don't worry there are many messed up people out there. :P

fishing user avatarwdp reply :

No, you're not normal. But you're a normal fisherman. Welcome to the club. Lol. ?

fishing user avatarIndianaFinesse reply :

Yes, I can relate, and no, you are not the only person that can't stop thinking about fishing and buying tackle.  Welcome to the club, it sounds like you have already made an aquantance with the bait monkey.;)

fishing user avatar12poundbass reply :

You are not alone! I too am the same way. My abnormal behavior began over 2 decades ago and progressively has gotten worse. I'm guessing most if not all of us on here are the same. Us abnormal humans like to stick together. We can all thank Glenn for giving us a place to congregate!

Just remember the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Just keep in mind I've been fighting this addiction for 2 decades and its gotten worse so you have a long road a head of you. Enjoy the ride!

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

If you're not normal then neither am I :D

fishing user avatarjdz197 reply :

It's a healthy addiction if it gets you outside. That's my justification

fishing user avatarfrosty reply :

You're definitely not normal, but you obviously like to fish so I'm ok with it...

fishing user avatarshovelmouth83 reply :

i know i am not normal but i know what you mean. wait till you start thinking "i can bass fish all year". i am at this stage and omfg i cant stand the anxity...

must go fishing NOW!!!!

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

It beats the heck out of obsessing over how/where you're going to get your next "fix" or how your neighbor has a nicer car than you do.  (Now, if it's a boat, that's a different story).

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

Normal is very overrated! When I first started bass fishing I was the same way. The good book tells us for everything there is a season. Enjoy.

fishing user avatarTurtle135 reply :

completely normal! watch out for those who do not share our addiction, something is seriously off with those kind! :D

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Your not the only one buddy.  I have been fishing for over 50 years.  40 years from a bass boat.  I am surrounded by clear lakes loaded with bass, peacock, and exotics.  I fish everyday.  The wife knows I'm going, and never asks.  She just says good luck, and I have to show her the pics when I get back.  When your married for 47 years there is no need for words, she just knows!!!!!!!!:laughing9:

I never buy a lot of tackle.  I just buy what works, and I keep replacing.  I buy a reel when something wears out.  I have confidence in what I do, and have no need to keep buying new stuff just to try it.  I know guys that have to have the latest of everything.  I think there nuts!  Manufacturers often make stuff to catch fisherman, and not so much fish.  You buy it, they vacation on their big boats.

fishing user avatarGreenGhostMan reply :

Good to know I'm not alone!  Feels like I just stood up and admitted I have an addiction in AA (Angler's Anonymous).

fishing user avatarCaliyak reply :

You are not alone. My 2 cents, don't neglect the family, work or anything important to your family. I love fishing but I will not go for a dance recital or kid's ball game. Also, take your wife on a date so she knows you are still there.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Well, I've been fishing for near on 60 years now and still can't sleep the night before a trip is planned. Get use to it. :)

I'm lucky my wife has been as understanding as she has been so far.  At first I had to make sure we didn't have anything planned for the weekend so I knew I was free to fish... It's gotten to the point where she now tells me "why don't you go fishing on Sunday" or just last week she told me "you should take tomorrow off and fish before it gets cold again."  She's even finding private ponds and lakes for me to fish now.

It's not a problem, it's a solution!

The only real downside is the extra effort you have to put in for carrying all that extra tackle. I have 7 rods/reels and 5 tackleboxes in my car. You can never be too prepared.

If it's normal to be at work and mapping out your next fishing trip on Navionics, then yes, I would say you are pretty normal.

It sounds like you're just in the early stages :)

Wait until you have other avid fishermen telling you that you fish too much.

fishing user avatarbmac31 reply :

Definitely normal for this group. Most of us know exactly what your talking about. It's a great hobby just don't let it interfere with the import parts of life. Like a job or your family.

My thought exactly. I have a demanding job with equipment repair and always have something to do around the home front. My kids are grown now and do like doing something with the old lady now and then to keep her from killing me but my mind is on it also. Don't sweat it if everything is ok on the home front. It is an addiction. You could be addicted to something a lot worse.

fishing user avatarlonnie g reply :

ITS NICE TO HAVE CRAZY FRIENDS!! who else would get up at day light, fish in the rain, wind, cold, stay out all day. try to outrun the bait monkey. want to do it all over again the next day. and then actually want to show pics of it. that's not normal??? well just go ahead and put me in a straight jacket.  P.S. SOME OF OUR FRIENDS ACTUALLY DO THIS IN A KAYAK!:wacko::) IM IN!!

fishing user avatarLBASS01 reply :

Nothing wrong with you, I'm the same way!  My wife thinks I have an obsession as well.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

As long as your family comes first, you are fine.  Don't spend money you don't have on tackle and time your family needs by yourself.  Beyond that, welcome to the bass obsession

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

Normal? Are you kidding? I think we're all bozos on this buss.

fishing user avatarrunt4561 reply :

welcome to the past 30 years of my life. here is the deal.... there are people that like to fish and then there are fishermen. being a fisherman is like someone being 6 foot tall. its not a choice, it is just who they are. I can choose to have cheese on my burger I can not choose not to be a fisherman. it is what I am.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

Nope you're not normal at all, good thing you found a group of wackos like you on BR to act as your support group!

This mostly describes me. 99% of the time, if I'm awake I'm doing something fishing related. If I'm at work, I'll play fishing videos on YouTube on my phone and just listen to them while my phone is in my pocket. I'm constantly looking for places to fish, checking the forecast in the dead of winter as if I'd even be able to fish. I'm constantly making lists of fishing items I need to buy, always reorganizing tackle, and sometimes I just stare it, just looking at my tackle for 20 minutes straight. It really is an addiction, one that many of us here share. Bass fishing is on my mind 99% of the time while I'm awake. Even during that 1% of the time when fishing really shouldn't be on my mind, sometimes it sneaks in ;)

fishing user avatarNeil McCauley reply :

Kind of like any addiction...it isn't if it's "normal" that matters, it's whether it is affecting your function in other social/occupational/financial roles. People tend to joke about it but things like gambling, shopping and video games can ruin lives, fishing can too. For me I know I can avoid a lot of problems by planning ahead for it so that it is more a reward for meeting all other obligations instead of an escape from them.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

You're as normal as apple pie  :)

NOW, get mama interested in fishing and you'll have found the world's greatest fishing companion.

It begins by sparking her interest in nature, teaching her every audible bird song,

every tree encountered, right down to underwater exploration (better known as angling).

Or just let her out fish you and act like it's just killing you. Mine loves to go as long as she does better than me!

The fair sex is more competitive than many might imagine.

Sadly, I don't allow my wife to outfish me, she does it all by herself  :D
