2017 Goals 2024

fishing user avatarKuenro02 reply :

My goal this season are to get better with a jerkbait and an overall deepwater bass fisherman. I grew up throwing a spinnerbait and topwater along the shoreline then progressed into flippin and pitchin soft plastics and worms along the shoreline. I will admit,  if the fish are not on the shoreline I'm lost. I've tried fishing humps and points and bars but my confidence goes way down and with that so does my fish "catching". Ive told myself to just leave the shallow water gear at home so I'm not tempted to pull it out when I'm not having luck. If I want to get better in deep water I need to upgrade and get better with my electronics as well.

These are my goals, what are yours?

fishing user avatarCrawfishKiller reply :

I love this.  I am the same way.  I was raised flipping plastics then self taught myself reaction style lures. I'm focusing on flipping and pitching jigs during this spawn season.

My main focus is on slowing down.  I fish too fast and give up on areas too quickly.

I'm entering my first tournament in April.  I plan on fishing 3 or 4 tournaments this year.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

If you're serious about learning what it takes to improve your 'off the bank' effectiveness.

Read Buck Perry's book Spoonplugging.

There is a lot to learn and much of it is covered in this timeless Classic.

fishing user avatarScarborough817 reply :

i would like tom improve on a few things.

the first is fishing cranks effectively, second is having the patience to fish jigs and worms deep and third is find out out more about the lake. if that means using my ibobber to find out about whats underwater and where the ledges are than that's what i'll do

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

My goal this year is the same as last, and that is to not set any goals. So far, it's looking pretty likely I'll accomplish it

fishing user avatarHawkeye21 reply :

Every year my goal is to fish more.

I want to get out on my kayak more especially on new lakes and on the Mississippi.

I want to learn how to locate bass on the Mississippi River better.

Would like to get better at using big jigs.

Would like to try the drop shot this year.

Need to improve on using the Ned Rig.

Want to beat my personal best.

Just improve as a fisherman overall.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

My goal is the same as last year. Improve on deciphering sonar .

I would say get better at backhand casting , but if I havent learned it by now  I never will .

fishing user avatarMumbly reply :

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

My goal is to be more successful from the back of the boat when my boater is flipping a weed line with the trolling motor turned up..

I know it's counter productive, but you'd be amazed by how many guys down here do just that.

Then when they slow down, and if he's any good, there's not much time or productive water left that I'll  have a fighting chance to make a worthwhile flip/pitch.

Throwing into open water with a different presentation can be a waste of time more times than not.

To me it's the worst part of being a tournament co angler.

Mike

I'm in a similar boat and I often struggle when fish head to deep water during midsummer, although I don't need to upgrade my electronics because I did that 2 years ago.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

"2017 Goals"

More and larger bass

fishing user avatar38 Super Fan reply :

I said I was gonna get better at finesse fishing this year. So far it's not going well at all though.

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

I've got three I'm going to try and stick to

1. Catch two fish over 6 lbs

2. Learn how to better use a jig

3. S L O W   D O W N

That last one is a personal struggle of mine, but I saw it payoff last year a little so I have more motivation this year.

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

I try to master a new technique or revive an old one.  Since Yamamoto came out with a new chatterbait trailer (Miso) I am going to get back into bladed jigs.  The problem I have is that on the Potomac, the catfish just love chatterbaits.

@TOXIC any additional information, and perhaps pictures of this new trailer ?

Is this the one Bret Hite was using last year ?

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

Opps....it's the Zako.  I have them rigged on a couple different "bladed Jigs" and the action is impressive.

fishing user avatarBCline reply :

I set a goal of catching 300 bass this year.  So far I have 72.

fishing user avatarjimf reply :

Kind of same as OP - I'm not as good deep as I would like to be, and it's an area I think I could improve greatly.  But really my 3 main goals are 1) Fish with my Dad (82 years old) at least once, 2) Get a couple of my lifelong friends out a few times and 3) Getting my 2 grown kids out a couple of times.   I'm a couple of hundred miles away from parents  and childhood friends, which is an obstacle at times, but I just need to make that happen.

fishing user avatarbrgbassmaster reply :

Up my swim bait game and catch a DD. Current pb 8.64lbs

fishing user avatarpaul. reply :

1.  have fun.

2.  catch fish.

3.  don't fall in.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

1. Catch as many bass as I did last year

2. Catch bigger bass than last year.

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

My goal for 2017 is to see 2018! :D

Soft plastic swim baits. I love hard baits and this is one soft bait that relates to my style more than any other soft plastic.  I've just been reluctant to really give them a serious chance.

My other goal is to introduce at least one more person to this great sport.

Same here, man! I do much better fishing shallow water with visible cover. I did do some deep, open water fishing this fall/winter, but I didn't have much luck.

This year, I also plan to be more patient when fishing. I want to understand why I caught a fish where/when I did, and I want to cover areas more thoroughly, instead of making my normal 4 or 5 casts and moving on.

Another goal of mine is finishing top 5 in a kayak tournament this year.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Make more memories! ;)

fishing user avatarJustinCT reply :

In 2016, I didn't get my boat in the water until the last week of August due to a variety of reason.  So, first goal is to launch and fish by the end of April.  The second is to fish more than the 8 times I did in 2016.  Beyond that, I'll come up with more as I go along.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

I'm finally going to join a few tourneys as a coangler, couple big bass derbys run by conservations and a couple of kayak tournaments.  Main goal is it have fun and enjoy the friendly competition and learn new waters.

fishing user avatarscbassin reply :

When you as old as I am the goal is to still be breathing on 1/1/18

fishing user avatarFishinggeek reply :

My goal this year is to enjoy life and fish as much as possible.

fishing user avatarBigSkyBasser reply :

I can 2nd jerkbaits as a focus this year. Overall I'm concentrating on baits and techniques that aren't popular here because most of the bass fisherman haven't had well rounded success in tournaments so they just don't get fished. These include swimbaits, jerkbaits, vibrating jigs, and punching.

The hope is that this will lead me to a new PB smallmouth as I firmly believe I spend most of my time in an area that easily is holding another state record fish (7+.)

fishing user avatarMTBassin reply :

I set a few goals for myself this year. (might be tough being a new dad, work full time, and school full time)

1. Catch 100+ bass.

2. Get better with dropshot and crankbait.

3. Get my wife on some bass.

4. Catch some fish from my kayak I bought last summer.

fishing user avatarHeavyDluxe reply :

1. Get out fishing, kayaking, swimming, or walking with the family each week.

2. Head out for two fishing/kayaking days alone with each of my older kids.

3. Fish a lot.

4. Improve at clay shooting so I'm more able to murder ducks and geese next fall.

fishing user avatarGundog reply :

My goal is to work more on finesse fishing. Work on detecting the finesse bite and keeping fish hooked when using smaller hooks, lighter line and softer rods.

Please help with geese population.

fishing user avatarHeavyDluxe reply :

I would if I could.... don't live exactly on the heart of the flyway.  And snows don't really wind up here.  I wish they did.  I see videos of these tornados of snows and regret taking up waterfowl hunting AFTER I moved from Delmarva.

fishing user avatarmarkinny reply :

when i,m not using a spinnerbait, my go to rig is a wacky rigged senko and i fish nice and slow. works like a charm.

fishing user avatarNeil McCauley reply :

My goals seem to get less and less focused on the fish every year, but oh well here goes in no particular order:

1. Keep gear more organized, clean, dry, maintained, etc
2. Add Sacandaga, Champlain, Ontario, and Placid to my map decals of lakes fished
3. Catch a 26" Laker, and 18" SMB and LMB
4. Catch a Landlocked Salmon

5. Fill the freezer with perch
6. Stay safe

7. Pull an overnight/day trip in early July
8. Use fly rod more
9. Get wife to accompany at least one trip, and not be miserable <_<
10. Camp/fishing trip with dad and brothers

fishing user avatarbh91 reply :

My goal is to use the stuff I've bought . As well as catch the Wyoming state lmb record since it seems that most people fish for walleyes or trouts here .. the state record is only 7 lbs 14 oz

fishing user avatarshovelmouth83 reply :

for me this year.

#1 want to work more on my deep water tactics.

#2 learn more on jig trailers and coloring/flavors.

#3 learn patterns of the big bass a lot better.

have fun and enjoy every waking day..

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

My goal is to not have lateral epicondylitis (tennis/angler's elbow) in my right elbow by the end of the season. I got it real bad last year. Hurt for months.

That sucks... summer before last I had really bad wrist tendonitis that I couldn't keep in check.

I play racquet sports (squash, mainly, and tennis) and have had the beginnings of TE before.  I've found that consistently - and properly - wearing a good brace for it and some stretches really helps.

Oh, and mainlining ibuprofen. ;)  Good luck.  If I can help at all, holler.

fishing user avatarJustinCT reply :

Posted my 2017 goals earlier in the thread but my most immediate goal is to now take the boat out of storage, clean her up, start the spring prep and fire the motor this Saturday.  Going to be almost 60 degrees here after a month of miserable weather and I've got the itch bad.

fishing user avatarMark Albert reply :

2016 was a hard confusing year. My main goals for this year is to get the boat out more, make more memories with the little guy(my son). Getting some big ones would be nice too ?

fishing user avatarBurke reply :

After 9 years of Hard Bass Fishing - I have not caught one on a d**n Jig.

This year's goal: Use mostly jigs at the lake that I practice at.

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

My goals for 2017 are:

1) Use a baitcaster more often.

2) Use my comfort baits less and try new brands and bait styles.

3) Fish at least once a week during peak season.

fishing user avatarHawkeye21 reply :

I'm all set to check off one of my goals this year.  Got signed up for my first kayak tourney of the year.

fishing user avatarKris2016 reply :

2017 will be a pretty big change for me and my fishing.  I have sold off a lot of my fishing rods and reels to downsize my arsenal.  I have purchased what I consider better quality rods and reels to get me started.  I have changed my single line supplier to multiple suppliers and added a bunch of new lures, soft plastics and cranks.

I have several things to add to my boat this Season.  A dv unit for the co-angler and so I can see how much water I have for the outboard/transom mount trolling motor.  I also will be adding two more batteries further up front for the bow trolling motor and start replacing the batteries.

I plan on becoming a more versatile fisherman starting this Season.  I am usually a pretty staunch soft plastics user so I plan on doing more crankbaits and spinnerbaits among other things.  I have a couple of other ideas on things to try and will get them going after April 1st.
