go-to chatterbait weight? 2024

fishing user avatarEWREX reply :

3/8 or 1/2 oz?

fishing user avatarMN Fisher reply :

Depends on how deep I want to run them. 3/8 for shallower presentations, 1/2 if I want then to go deeper.

i fish them from 2-5 feet all the way to deeper grass lines in about 10-12 feet of water. I'm getting a great deal on some jackhammers so i want to make sure i'm going with the ideal weight before i pull the trigger :happy-devil-0048:

10' and under I use the 3/8, up to 20' it's the 1/2. You can probably get by with the 3/8 for your depth-range.

Both!

I use 3/8th on the bank and 1/2 offshore. A lot of pro's don't use 3/8ths at all.. all 1/2oz (even up shallow).

Would this great deal be going on for the public by chance? I'm looking to stock up just like you are!

Depend as everyone said. 3/8 for shallower applications and less wind or if you wanna run it super slow. Or 1/2 for little deeper and more wind or if you wanna keep it down while burning it

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

Easy choice for since on the Potomac I am fishing 6' or less...3/8th.

2-5' feet 3/8. 10-12' 1/2. So in your case the "ideal" weight would be both.

*The cheaper chatterbait series can have trouble "staying down" which is why there are those that will move up to 1/2 oz. version . I do not believe the Jack hammer has those issues thus the 3/8th version would be a more versatile fit for what you want to do . Playing with the rod angle as well as the line weight and even the  trailer style can vary how a chatterbait runs in the water column / depth you want .

1/2 oz. for sure. All around good, versatile size.

fishing user avatarBurke reply :

1/2 oz  -

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

1/2 ounce all the time.

fishing user avatarKoz reply :

For me it depends upon the weight of the trailer I am using and how deep I want the bait to go.

BTW, today I saw Cabela's has the basic Z-Man's for sale for under $3.

fishing user avatarCrankFate reply :

1/4 to 3/8 these fish do not eat big things.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

3/8s for ticking the top of grass, or shallow water. 1/2 for keeping it down on the bottom, and I have gone up to 3/4 if I'm in water deeper than 8-9 feet. I don't like 1oz bladed jigs it takes a lot of effort...even with premium jackhammers and project z's to get a blade started and to maintain the vibration with  that heavy of a bait. The best use I have found for 1oz + baits is a hard rip and fall technique, and that's been not very productive for me.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

3/8 for most all my baits

fishing user avatarI'm Blue reply :

dont think it matters, they all seem to suck equally, dont get these things, they seem like a good idea, and have thrown them quite a bit, but todate have never had a bite or follow or anything.
hrew a white one today over hydrilla along a stretch I knew were fish. I mean really knew, as I actually caught a few on buzzbaits and a weedless spoon,,, figured white chatter shoulda worked there once sun came up,,,, nope.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

3/8oz 95% of the time, 3/4 or 1oz the other 5% of the time.

fishing user avatarMr Swim Jig reply :

3/8oz 95% of the time...

fishing user avatarLxVE Bassin reply :

.5 ounce

fishing user avatarHawkeye21 reply :

I use the 1/2 oz. almost exclusively.  I power fish the chatterbait and need it to stay down enough while running it fast during the summer.  In the spring and fall I fish it slower in deeper water so I need it to sink a little faster.  I have a couple 3/8 oz. ones but I get aggravated using them.  It's just one of those things you don't realize what you prefer until you're out there all day fishing them.

fishing user avatarstratoliner92 reply :

1/2 oz

fishing user avatarDens228 reply :

I have mainly 3/8's and a couple 1/2's.  I use the 3/8's 99% of the time.

fishing user avataryosef reply :

3/8 with a trailer is heavy enough for me but then again the lake I fish is mainly 5-15’ deep

fishing user avatarJackKlassen reply :

1/2 oz. all the time

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

I will use both, it just depends how deep the water is but since I'm on the shore more often than not, I use 3/8oz more.

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

Mostly 3/8oz. 1/2oz about 25% of the time.

Last season started tossing some in the 3/4 - 1 1/2oz range for burning deep weedlines for largemouth or fishing deep rocky flats for smallies, especially on windy/wavy days. You can cover a ton of water and keep your bait in a deep strike zone the entire cast. Toss a 1 1/2oz Picasso Martens Shock Blade in the cart next time you're making an order. Great bait.

HALF O-ZEE. BAIT FOR ME

THREE OUTTA EIGHT GET OUTTA MY FACE

100% personal preference, i like the 1/2 because it runs lower in the water column, i get more deflections and chances to rip through the grass to entice a bite!

fishing user avataryosef reply :

I prefer 3/8, I fish 10’ and shallower clear water ...I do have a few 1/2 but never throw them

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

3/8's was making it happen yesterday ~

fishing user avatarL a r r y reply :

I use 1/2oz exclusively whether I am burning it over grass, or slow rolling it through some pads/grass with a lake fork magic shad in 4.5".  With this bigger presentation, I normally get bigger bites as shown here with the only big bite I was able to get in a recent outing
