i usually like anything in chrome but have been killing lately with anything red with bleeding hooks.what colors work for you?

Personally I don't fish red hooks.

presentation works differently depends on the water condition. And I have caught a few with bleeding shiner

Of course you need to know the details to make an accurate selection for a given trip, but there has to be one or two that you generally throw during a given season.
Mine are:
Spring- Jackal TN/70 in Red Craw
The rest of the year- Excalibur XR 50 in sexy shad

That is my favorite trap color, period. I just wish that color was available from Jackall, Excalibur, or Lucky Craft. I end up throwing the trap I think is better (the aforementioned baits), but that is the best shad pattern IMHO.

I was hoping the original poster would at least give his location, type of lake, water condition so we could help him pick the colors that would help him on his home waters. He did not see the importance in disclosing that info, so there was no way to pick any colors that might be of help to him. The ones everyone listed will catch fish; however, a very slight color change, size change, and whether it has rattles or not will many times make a huge difference in his catch rate.

My favorite is a red craw color with red hooks, I don't know what it's called exactly. This color seems to work best in most of the lakes around me, but there really isn't one best all-around color in my opinion.

Where I live in SW Michigan the majority of lakes that I fish do not have shad available as part of the forage base, that said shad patterns still will produce here because some of the minnows & shiners in our waters are similiar in color. I definetely mix it up with trap baits, this spring the Koppers Live Target Crawfish Trap in the Red Black color produced very well for me. During the summer & especially during this fall I have had success with the following baits & calors this season. The Strike King Red Eye Shad in the Mojarra, Japanese Shad, Sexy Shad, Sexy Chrome Shad & Firetiger have been productive for me. The Japenese Shad especially has been a standout in clear water, I'm hoping they add other sizes & baits in this color the fish have been choking on it in one particular lake (maybe I shouldn't have shared that). I started throwing the Spro this year and I've been impressed, I especially like their Old Glory color, it looks almost too pretty to fish, that said I do anyway and it's stuck some good ones for me. The Xcalibur is available in rattling and also a one knocker version, for some reason the rattling version has been more productive for me, this bait seems to have a louder sound than the Strike King, I've done well with their Bone & Ghost color. The Jackall TN 60 is also an excellent bait, it seems to have a little tighter wiggle than the others, I like their Ghost color along with the HL Blueback chrome which is a little more muted color than a typical Chrome Blue, I like this color when I want a little less flash but a similiar look. The Yozuri Rattlin' Vibe is an old favorite I like their Baby Bass & Ghost Shad colors. The wildcard has been the Sebile Flat Shad in the Hollow Mullet color, no rattles & tranluscent at times will fool the fish when a regular trap bait might be too much at times in clear water. I used to throw regular Rattle Traps and I know they are still effective but I've been so impressed with these newer baits that they have been put in retirement or I save them for lakes that have a lot of Northern Pike.

What are you talking about, Natural? You have an airbrush, which means that EVERYBODY has a bait available in Smokey Joe.

This past season, I threw the Xcalibur Xr50 almost exclusively. There were three colors that worked great.
In this order:
1-Pearl Melon
2-Blue Chrome/Orange
3-Rayburn Red

chrome blue back, and gold black back are go to's, and a red craw color is a fav.
i really like the strike king red eye shad baits and have done well with the sexy ahad and chrome sexy shad.... but the finish on them is total crap. wish they would fix this because i love the action and sound compared to other baits... think imma try some excaliber's this fall/winter.

Chrome with blue back is what I use generally. When the water gets heavy stain to muddy I have had good luck with the chartreuse/purple color.
