My go to popper the Yo-zuri 3D Popper, has been redesigned. It no longer sits near vertical or produce its unique blurping sound. EBay has dried up and I need to find a replacement. The old Excaliber Pop-R comes close but still doesn't produce like my old favorite. Yo-zuri's new version is just a splashed and the chug bug is a wash. What are your favorite popper' s that pop and blurb? Anybody try the fairly new Rebel popping frog?
None of the modern, popular poppers are going to have what you're looking for. The YM, Rico, Zell Pop, Iovino, G Splash, Duo, etc...are all spitters. You might try the Hula Popper.
The bass in Mexico like the "blurp" you are looking for as well. Best I have found are the rapala skitter pop (wood), lobina rio rico and the yellow magics.
Jeff
The Hula popper doesn't splash, just pops or blurps. But I have found that I can make any popper spit or pop just based on how high I keep my rod tip. Lower for a pop or chug, and higher for a spit or splash. I personally prefer the spit or splash, so I mainly use Storm Chugbugs. I have tried the Rebel popping frog and it would not sit straight up in the water and did not splash or pop. Total fail. I don't know if it was a lemon of a lure or what, but the Rebel Pop-R is a good popper, especially for popping or chugging.

The Lobina, yellow magic's and and the mega-X lures are too expensive to sacrifice since more snook and baby tarpon will hit them than bass. They have a limited life span.
Never thought about Hula Poppers, havent seen one in years on the shelf. May try it minus the skirt.
Try the skitter pop. It is half the price of the others. Also try using braid.

Love the Hula Popper!!! I can pretty much find them at any tackle shop or online tackle shops. The only issue I have w/the Hulas is that all of the bream around here are too inquisitive (nosey) that I end up catching lots of them on accident.

Yeah I had that with the yo-zuri too being it was smaller than most poppers with sticky little hooks. But this year the bream have all been bulls on the bed and made it into my cooler.

The Rebel Poppin' Frog is one of the very few new lures I've purchased, and I'm sorry I did. Very little action/pop at all. Just couldn't make it do much of anything. It looks good, but that's about it.

You can get pretty much any popper to bloop, use a clinch knot (tied direct no split ring), and slide it to the top of the tie. Use a slightly slower rod, and work the lure with more of a drag than a snap, with less slack on the front end. They will also push water, walk the dog, and do all sorts of dances, but why? splish man, splish...Now, (to the OP), go put some lotion on your hands...
I can BLOOP a Jackal Boil Trigger using braid and short, hard pops. That thing is suprisingly loud.
Popping frog does suck, I got one as a gift. It is just way too light weight and floats too high.
I agree with reason, you can do a longer stroke versus short snap a pop r will blurp.
I heard the same thing about the boil triggers too, common complaint when they came out is they wouldn't spit.
I use the old Rebel Zell Rowland signature Pop-Rs and they pop and blurp really well. I have yet to try the current Pop-Rs being produced mainly because I think the old ones have better paint jobs and don't look as cheap.

The Pop-R just doesnt have the right noise that the yo-zuri had. Right now the fish are addicted to my last one, its a golden lure catching me more and bigger fish this year than all other baits combined.
Webertime & Road Warrior
Im trying to avoid the $$ lures because the snook and tarpon tear all the lures up after just a few days of fishing. But I will check the Jackal out, it sounds like what Im talking about, thanks webertime.

Oh man, the lotion thing again.......... Queebs me out! John Wayne never used lotion. Grandpa Red Neck never used lotion. Im kinda proud of looking like an alligator!
Have you ever tried filing the bottom edge? On a
pop r... ? I think I know the sound... I used to get that with modified pop r's.... I see them at DSG.. WM... For a couple bucks all the time... Cheap enuff to modify and loose to tarpon..etc.....
I know I have some bass bugs..( Balsa)that are distinctive but .. Yea way light.. Fly rod stuff...
Shoot... When I was a kid... We threw those with a plastic bobber... And Always caught exceptional fish... Good luck... Post back if you find it out!
As mentioned before...the skitter pop as the ''blurp'' your looking for

I mainly fish Yellow Magics, Ricos, Splash It's, basically the baits I mentioned in my first post. To me, they aren't "blooping" baits by nature. Most of the baits with a severe overbite spit and make more of a "chh, chh, chh, swish" sound. They are great baits and usually walk really well but not what I would consider a "blooping" popper.

Those are the original ones with the clear cupped face? Not the new X Rap Pop......

I have one pop r that I sanded the top of the cup down on. It spitts less spray. Maybe this is the one that blurbs easier? I mean it is a 5 dollar bait if you want to experiment.
I hear you on the $$ for the baits, it is crappy to lose or break one.

Some of my biggest blowups come on blurps.
I feel more confident when I get a series of blurps rather than spits.
Nothing like a blurp!
I see a popper on TW from a company called Baker. Ive never heard or seen there stuff before and the price is suspiciously low. But there popper looks like suspiciously like the old yo-zuri, right down to the molding marks and innards visible through the clear part of the body. Makes me wonder if "Baker" got a hold of their old moldings or something. Im going to give them a ry along with the other mentioned, thanks everybody for your input.
The skitterpop will do what you want, especially with a little slack in the line, the line close to the top of the tie, and a pull rather than snap, especially when you reel a quarter crank while pulling. The blurp and bloop just catches them better than a splash or spray/spit.
It sure does.

No, I agree, they certainly want to spit more than bloop, or blurp, but they'll do it. The newer yellow magics (in the plastic cases like Ricos) don't spit as much as the older ones, and are balanced a bit different. There are 3 different ones. Much like crankbaits, most have a personality. I've found the Iovinos to be the most consistent. My Michael's and early Ricos, are by far the best spitters, but they all work well. The feathers are the key. I got a hold of one of Zell Rowland's Pop Rs, and started modifying them in a similar fashion. I find I like even less lower lip than he did. I usually pick up older versions at flea markets and widdle them with a knife, they are convinced they are JDM...
