Hook Storage 2025

fishing user avatarWildbillb reply :

How are you guys storing your hooks?  I am just looking for another idea to store my hooks in my tackle box or in the boat.

Thanks

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

This one of my favorite boxes. I am about to out grow it and get another one

fishing user avatarPondBoss reply :

You may try one of the Plano boxes that seals air tight, that way there is zero chance of rust getting to your hooks.

I have a box like this made by falcon for hooks I've used but I generally keep them in their original package in a ziplock bag it's keep them dry and. Read somewhere that the moment you pull a hook out of the package it looses some of its sharpness.

fishing user avatar(='_'=) reply :

i use one of these, one side has hooks in several sizes, the other side has the weights...

I am a sucker for buying hooks.  I go into a fishing tackle store at least once a week and if I don't buy anything else, more often than not I'll get another package of hooks, something I don't already have.

Once day at WalMart, going through the close out aisle I found some see-thru pencil cases.  They are designed to fit the rings inside your note book.   Anyway I bought a dozen of these (75 cents ea.) and I keep hooks in them, sorted according to style, tx rig hooks, wacky hooks, drop shot hooks, frog hooks and so forth.  I keep them all in the step bin in my boat where they are easy to get to.

fishing user avatarHeavyDluxe reply :

I use a 3700 series (I think) Plano box.  I take a safety pin, take a particular size hook (3/0 EWG, nickel), and thread them on the pin.  Once the pin is 'full', I drop it into a particular, labelled bin in the box.

This keeps the hooks from turning into too big of a tangled mess in any compartment and keeps hooks from jumping out of their bin and into another.

i use a bass pro finesse binder and keep all my hooks in their packaging its helped me out a lot. i find it easier to navigate thru

fishing user avatarBass Junkie reply :

Plano 3700 series have never failed me.

fishing user avatarwnybassman reply :

I keep them all in their original packaging and put all the packages in a very small one compartment Plano box.   If they don't all fit in that box, then I have too many hooks.

Good idea.

I keep my loose ones in a plano box.  For my trailer rigs I use a round styrofoam flotation tube (used for floating while swimming) cut to size and stick my hooks in, then keep it in a zip lock bag.  I keep only 3 boxes in bag so the tube keeps the boxes upright too.

fishing user avatarwebertime reply :

Keep them in their original packages and pull as needed.  They go into a FTO terminal tackle box for my trips.  I periodically go through it and pull bent/rusty/salted hooks and recycle those.  I found boxes with moveable dividers would shift enough and hooks would slide over or under the dividers and create a mess.  The safety pin idea is pretty sharp though.

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

I use one of the Falcon hook boxes.

fishing user avatarbasskicker98 reply :

I personally have a medium size tackle box and I put all my hooks on paper clips to store them in there. They don't get mixed up that way.

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

For hooks and sinkers I use the thinner Plano boxes.  3601 and 3701's.  I have a co-angler bag which holds 4 3600's in them.  By switching to the thinner 3601's I was able to fit a total of 6 boxes in this one bag.  Awesome space savers.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I leave them in the original packages, and store them in a Plano Hydroflow Box.  This is the ONLY box where I've not encountered rusty hooks after a trip in the rain and cold.

fishing user avatarcueball reply :

I use the Falcon, now Plano, terminal tackle box to hold a small number of hooks I use a lot.  I like to be able to go to one spot and have all of the items I need for any given rigging.

I keep the rest stowed away, in either the original package, or small zip lock bags that are labelled with manufacturer, model # and size, stashed in a Plano Worm Wrap.  Holds lots of hooks in small space and they are double bagged to keep them away from water.

Take a pool noodle and a 3700 series box. Cut the pool noodle and jam in it the slots. Hook the hooks in the pool noodle material. My friend ties hair jigs for crappie and blue gill and he uses a fly box ( made to how fly fishing flies) he suggested doing this for hooks. Ive never done it but it makes sense.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

Here's a neat little tip I saw a while back and will be employing myself here when I restock some of my hooks.

Take a standard safety pin and thread the eye of your hook through the open barb before re-closing it.  Now you won't have a loose hooks flopping around your tackle tray or on the boat.  It's much easier to manage when it comes time to change hooks as well without the fear of getting stuck reaching for one hook or worse, pulling out one and several get caught and fall out.  Like this.....

Works great on drop shot and smaller hooks that tend to get caught up on one another.  As far as my EWG, swimbait, Confidence Baits hooks, those all go in a 3600 Guide Series tackle Tray along with my other weights and such.

Try it!

I was wondering how I could help stop the rust. I have lures/hooks/split rings getting signs of rust after a single trip. I just open up my 3700s and let them dry. I have not really checked to see how long it takes to dry everything while in my garage. Do you do anything else after the rain? Do you think they dry out faster? The only thing im concerned with is if I drop it in the water it wont float, but im willing to compromise.

Have you seen those Trokar hook assortments? The trays that they come in look nice, and kind of reminds me of a fly box. Im wondering if I could get a tray like that.

I have one of those silica packages (that comes with new shoes or the like. They say something like "not safe for consumption" or whatever. The hard plastic ones are better) in each of my plano boxes. I have fished in the rain with them open, then put them back in my backpack all wet and I have yet to encounter rusty hooks.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

I haven't read through this entire thread...but if not mentioned already, I cut the ends of a q-tips off and place them in each section of my hooks in all my boxes not just terminal.  That cotton swap absorbs the moisture or water that drips down. Works great. Anything that has developed rust has been my lack of observation.

Actually you can make it yourself.  Go to a craft store and look at their plastic container aisle (most of them are made by Flambeau or Plan anyway) where folks use them to store stamps, letters, cutouts, etc. and then get a piece of craft foam.  Simply cut and fill the slots snuggly (even hot glue them in place if need be) and then insert your hooks.  You can even use an exacto knife or dremel and trim any fixed dividers to custom fit an area.

fishing user avatarBradGuenette reply :

trokar elite pro assortment.

Couldn't be happier with this set, when I loose a hook it just gets replaced when I get in off the water. organized, compact, and super convenient to have!

I know they dry out faster.  They also don't allow water to pool up inside.  Seems counter intuitive, but the concept works.

Foam pipe insulation also works and comes in a few different diameters.

Dual sided small plano boxes. Keep offsets in one, keel weights and twist locks in another, other hooks in another.
