I went fishing today and was looking for a new pond and came across a tackle bag , i waited to see if anyone was fishing nearby and nobody was. so 2 1/2 hrs go by and nothing yet. i'm starting to wonder who's this is and nobody comes to claim this bag ,so after all said and done,i decide to take it myself after 2 1/2 hrs go by ,so did i do the right thing or no ? nobody there almost 2 1/2 hrs mind you now and nobody is showing up either .your opinion on this strange find. i was fishing all around for 2 1/2 hrs and i think who's this bag belongs to but nobody is around or near this pond or bag, just myself that's it!
How much time went by?
I would post a sign at the pond on a tree with your number to let someone know you found their tackle bag if it contains a decent amount of stuff...I remember losing my tackle box at a ramp as a kid on a small lake (before cell phones and internet) and a week later I found a sign posted where the D.E.C posts regulations that a box of tackle was found...
I had a huge plano box back then, big double sided box with tons of lures and I was devastated, and when I saw that sign as I went back a few times to look and ask around I remember being stoked.
If I remember correctly my father handed the guy a $50 bill and he wouldn't accept, so maybe post on craigs list or local chat group for fishing if it is worth anything.
Post a sign that you found one, no pictures or anything, with your number. If someone calls ask them to give you some clear identifiers about the bag to prove it's theirs. I'm sure someone is devastated they lost their bag, I know I would be.
Maybe drop it off at the police station, to at least salvage your karma meter.
What was in it? Post it on Craigslist. Give it a week. If the owner really wants it back they will look. If not, oh well. Lesson learned
Its mine..pm me for my address.
I agree with a note where you found it. If they describe it...it's theirs.

The is the best option and let's you know someone isn't trying to get free tackle.
Posting a note is a great idea. 2 and a half hours wouldn't have helped me when I left a box on a bank years ago. A week went by before I realized it was missing...called the office at the nearby campsite/boatramp. Some kind soul had turned it in and they were still holding it.
Keep it. Finders keepers, losers weepers. lol I found a soft tackle bag floating on Guntersville one year. It had several bags of senkos. The bag was stained like it had been in the lake awile. The baits were all in good shape. I was very happy!
Ya Im assuming its filled with tackle
took someone alot of time and money to fill that treasure chest
sure it hurt to have lost it..

Wow are you serious? We need less people like you in america.

Not cool.
Wondering... is "slimshad" a play on "Slim Shady"?

Whoa gentlemen! Let's turn down the heat a notch or two.
Dude found a bag, hung around for a couple of hours and is asking for some suggestions
on what to do. He didn't steal the bag, but he picked it up so the next guy wouldn't take it.
Posting a note would be a great idea, but I don't think he did anything wrong.
He didn't do anything wrong but he should at least attempt to find the owner before calling the tackle his own, In a few weeks if nobody's claimed it then keep it.

you guys realize he said it was floating in the lake, stained as though it was there a while?
honestly, the guy that dumped it off the boat into the lake (A.K.A. littering) would be the bigger jackass here....
to the OP, i agree completely with posting a note and giving it a few weeks at least to see if someone claims it. as bluebasser suggested be vague so that one must describe the bag exactly, but i would at least make an effort to get it back to the owner. i know i've done some dumb things before and would be absolutely crushed if this were one of them.....
now if no people come forward to claim it i would double down on the good karma and find a youth or new fisherman in need and supply them with what you found in an effort to "pay it forward"
Definitely leave a sign there, I'm sure if it were yours, you would want someone to do the same, no?
yeh just found a bag, got some stuff it and am wondering what to with it . 2 1/2 went by and nobody in the area to claim it and if i didn't do what i did then who would've ? didn't have any i.d with it .some suggestions thanks

Tell that to the couple that stole my phone, wallet, keys, fire pager and e-cigarette off the shore literally right behind my back while I was wading a section of the Bogue Chitto river. I'd even seen them before quite a few times, but neither I or local law enforcement has been able to find them again yet. We've been trying to nail them to the wall since that fire pager is government property.

How is your situation anything like the OP? I recommend you leave your valuables all over public places, and see how that works out for you. Probably a better plan to get a small dry bag, put your stuff in it, and clip it to your belt. They're about $8 at most sporting goods stores.
For the OP, a cragslist post and a note near the access site would be appropriate. If it was cash, you'd turn it in to the police. In either case, after a couple weeks of not hearing anything, it's yours.

He told squrimin wormin to keep the tackle bag without trying to find an owner.

You're comparing apples to oranges, bud. What happened to you is straight theft. What OP did isn't. He found a bag, waited to try and return it to its owner, and nobody showed up to claim it. If he didn't take it somebody else would have, and they may not even consider posting a note like the guys here are suggesting to.
Honestly, I would rather have left it and stayed unassociated with it. If someone else picks it up down the line, it's not my problem. If it turns out someone just forgot it and returned later and it was still there, the person who left it isn't going to be left wondering what happened to it.

There ought to be a "dislike this" button.
You guys are bunch of saints, do gooders and perfect humans. Dislike button is a good one too, haven't heard that before. There IS a learning moment in this thread,,,, Don't forget your tackle bag at a public fishing hole!
There's "the right thing," and then there's what many will do. I'd say the OP got a sampling of each.
