Fish measuring board / fish ruler? 2025

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

What do you use?

Starting this year I'll try to measure my fish not only by weight but by length as well. I'll need this to be very compact where I can put in my backpack (foldable) when bank fishing and can take a long in kayak with ease.

I'm interested in this one but other suggestions are welcome.

Hey Kicker, hoping someone answers your questions because I was just about to post this same topic.  I'm a bank fisherman and tired of guessing, or measuring by fishing pole!

@JustJames I have a honor one, was given to me in a tourney last spring. I like it it’s just not collapsible. I haven’t seen any like that best I can think of is a soft measuring tape that you could get at a sewing store.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

The members of my fishing club often wade or float rivers so this measuring tape, that the club provides free to members, has been a popular choice. The ring provides a convenient way to hang it from a chest pack or tackle box.

Only 18" long? That's like carrying around a scale that maxes out at 4lbs.

I'm also interested in what others say OP I will probably be getting one myself soon. I'm not sure about you but I'd prefer one of the "trough" style ones like the one in your picture so the fish are held in place while the kayak is rocking around.

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

I do have soft measuring tape that come with my scale. To measure with tape often time I have to lay the fish down on whatever floor which I don't do that any more. With measuring board I can wet the board and lay the fish in it.

The Hawg Trough seems to be the "standard" for most kayak guys I run into.  They are reasonably durable and if you glue wooden dowels into the cavities on the back, it becomes quite strong and floats.  They are too big for me personably to carry on the bank, but one would fit in most stretchy waterbottle holder.

For walking the bank I use a small luggage scale that someone on here linked to the last time scales came up.  It was like $5 on ebay and with a mini-lip-gripper attached, it is very compact and fits in my back pocket.

fishing user avatarthinkingredneck reply :

I put a measuring tape on my rod.  Glued on.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Personal use or tournament use? The tape measure is easier to carry then any board and you can lay down a bass on a wet towel that folds up into a plastic zip lock bag.

Tournaments require a Will He Go type board to bump the closed mouth into and allow pinching the the tail to measure the tail tips.

The Plano telescoping board photo should work for you.

That was way in the past. I used white sticker to mark 15" 20" and 24" but that way still required laying the fish down to take picture.

@fishwizzard I look at that one too, but 30" long that gonna be a hell carry around.

I also used to carry thin silicon board with me in case I need to put the fish down but over time it is just hard to manage and that thing disappeared.

Man I know now why my wife always complains I care more about bass than her lol.

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

I wonder if something like Tyvek would help protect the fish if one wanted to lay it down?  It is so slick that it should not abrade the slime coat off too badly and even a 2x3 piece will fold up small enough to fit in you pocket.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

When Bassin Mag had thier big bass contest they supplied entries with a 3" wide tape measure that rolled up and fit in a pocket, maybe a member still has one.

Google expandable bump board. Looks nice and breaks down into 3 Or four pieces. Measures from 8-36 inches. Its dark green in color and fairly inexpensive

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

If you have some large diameter PVC lying around, I've seen pretty decent ones made DIY, and you can choose the length and add a bump if you want, plus add an official adhesive ruler if you do tournaments. I might end up going this route.

TW carries a LMB release ruler that rolls up, 3" X 32" 2015 ICast award winner.

anybody remember those Stren adhesive strip tapes that came in each box of line? i had one in my old Sea Nymph.

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

Thanks everyone, I end up ordered the one I posted. This one fold to about 18" and should be stable enough to lay on uneven like rocks or my lap in kayak, will see how this works first.

fishing user avatarCrow Horse reply :

I'm a little late on this one but I picked this one up recently......

Folds down to 12" and opens to 36" and it floats....

Thx, I like this one too and seem stable enough. If the one I ordered isn't working I might get this one next.

I considered one of these but I almost don't trust myself not to ruin the wood by getting it soaking wet over time.

fishing user avatarCrow Horse reply :

Compared to the Hawg Trough, the Fish Stick is built like a tank. It's really solid. And it floats as is.....

I ended up with Gilbert's roll-up version

It's a bit easier for the hiking I have to do.

I know you already ordered the Plano one, but here's another option from Cabelas:

Comes in 16", 21" or 30"

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I got a Hawg Trough because KBF used to specify it.  (Fortunately, they've ammended the rules to allow a couple others, but I'm not familiar with them.  Unless you need it for tourny rules, I'd never recommend the Hawg Trough for a bunch of reasons...hopefully the others are better.  " Acceptable measuring boards include the “Hawg Trough” manufactured by Hagen’s (pictured below), a Yak Gear Fish Stik (Generation 2 only, with vertical lines on the fence and locking tabs that make the board more rigid) and the Ketch Co Measuring Board. "

I got my wife and adhesive one and put it on her paddle...can't recall if it was from TW, Austin Kayak, or Amazon, but it has held up much better than I expected.

I have the Gator Grip Golden Rule in 24" size.

I also have a scale with a built in tape measure.

fishing user avatargimruis reply :

I have The Judge.  I mostly bought it years ago for walleye fishing and it had to very accurate because we could only harvest specific size fish.  I still use it for bass too but I don't harvest them.  I normally don't weigh my bass, I measure them.
