I like Owner hooks, but they are a bit spendy. I mainly used regular offset shank, wide gap plus, and the Owner Rig'n hooks. I've heard some good things about the VMC hooks, including the "Ike Approved" line, but not a lot. They do seem to cost a bit less than the Owners. Have any of you tried both, and if so, what did you think of the VMC compared to the Owner?
Thanks,
Dave
I´ve used both,, nothing penetrates and lasts as sharp as long as an Owner hook. VMC are good but they are not Owner.

This!! Owners are by far my favorite.
Another Owner Fan........
I use primarily VMC hooks now with no problem. They are awesome for the price point
Owner by far.
Ive used Owner Wide gap plus and Rig N hook not too fond of them. The first week use I missed quite a number of good strikes so lost confidence now they just put away. I have VMC Fastgrip wide gap and have been very pleased with the hook-ups and will continue with them. Have seen them on sale so bought a few packages. If going for a premium hook its Trokar outstanding hook-up %.
I really like owner but due to cost have been using primarily VMC or gamagatsu and used bps in the past. I will take the VMC over gammy or bps any day. I have bent gammy and bps easiest out of the four brands. as far as vmc vs. owner I don't lose sleep over the performance. Set the hook they work just like the owners.
I use VMC worm hooks and also their drop shot hooks. I am pretty pleased with the VMC brand. On occasions, the hooks have snapped, one time being in a tournament. That being said, I am still happy with the VMC brand.

X2
VMC is the best bang for the buck in hooks right now IMHO. I am also not a fan of Owners (or Trokars either) and will go with Mustad, VMC, or Gamakatsu over them.
I would lose a vmc to a toothy critter before it would go bad. Wouldn't shed a tear like I would losing a owner
I like both! I use owners more then VMC but if budget is an issue then VMC will do you just fine.
I don't consider VMC to be a premium hook, they make good quality treble hooks. Owner makes high quality premium hooks.
Tom
The new Ike approved VMC HD wide gap hooks are very sharp and strong. I've been using them when I pour my swinging football heads and have been really happy with them.
I'm more or less in step with the other guys here, Owners are by far better than VMC. Owner would be my pick if forced to only use one brand of hooks for everything. That said I have an assortment of hooks from Mustad, Owner, and Gamakatsu that I use on a regular basis and am happy with all of them for the specific techniques I use them for. I feel confident when using a hook from any of these three brands, however in my mind they rank overall in this order; 1 Owner, 2 Gamakatsu, 3 Mustad.
I've only tried one package of VMC hooks and they were the Ike approved straight shank. The quality was terrible IMO when compared to any of the other three I've already mentioned. I'd certainly stick with Owner, no doubt.
VMC 4x perma steel trebles best hook I've used, don't use anything but in saltwater. Freshwater Eagle Claw works as good as any of them.
I only use the owner screw lock hooks. When I am going for a EWG or an offset I use h2o, you get 25 hooks for $4.99... I get 3-5 owner screw lock hooks (depending on the size) for the same price.
Me and my buddies joke around saying we are going to write h2o a letter and send them emails asking them to make some screw lock hooks
Owner hooks, especially their wacky hook
I have a plano 3771 full of hooks. I can say that I have Owners, VMC, Mustad, Gamakatsu, and Trokar. I have no idea which hooks are which anymore, but I have confidence in all of them.
I appreciate all your input, everyone.
Thanks!
It depends on what they are used for, people mistake Owner, Gamakatsu, and Trokar as being sharper than VMC and Mustad and it isn't true, the truth is they are different types of points. The Owner, along with Gammy and Trokar, have cutting points while the VMC and Mustad hooks use needle points, Mustad calls their ultra point and VMC has the cone cut. Cutting points, cut through the flesh while the needle point puncture, I like Owner hooks on flipping jigs, the 5304 is my favorite but on swim jigs I prefer Mustad and VMC and the same thing for spinnerbaits. When it comes to worm hooks, well I likoe Owners for thick plastics like creature baits but for standard wire hooks in light cover that are exposed or in smaller plastics I like the Mustad and VMC hooks.

You could turn some of those EWG hooks into screw lock hooks with the addition of a hitchhiker. You can get 24 for $5 and you're still getting them cheaper than an Owner.
As far as VMC hooks go, I've used them and have nothing against them. They seem super sticky and they get the job done. I really like their spin shot hooks. As much as I like the VMC's I REALLY like my Trokars! I loaded up on the TW sale around Christmas!

Where can I get hitchhikers at? Do I have to get them online or do stores carry them as well? I have Dicks Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, and Academy by me as far as fishing tackle goes

If I remember right, I think I've seen them at Gander. I could be wrong though and I can't promise yours will carry them. Otherwise I'd go ahead and check those places around you. If not BPS seems to be the cheapest I've seen at least with the bigger packs. TW has them too but it's $2.50 for 6 or 7 depending on size. BPS also has their online spring fishing classic with sales now with free shipping on orders over $75.

Well, since I have a similar collection, I'll suggest that you add Daiichi XPoint to yours!

I have never sent hooks back, but note the Double Back Guarantee.
Vmc vs Owner...that would be like Steve Urkel stepping into the ring with Gennady Golovkin. Owner KOs Vmc in the first round.
Academy sells the owner cps centering pins in the store. You can slap them on whatever hook you want and they’re basically the same thing as hitchhikers. Just don’t get as many in a pack. Saves you from having to order online tho.

I don't know, saw Urkel working out with Canelo...
Old 4+ year old thread with the same outcome.

I don’t know, I use them all. I, personally, go with gamakatsu most often because they’re almost always available. VMC small trebles are great, though. I don’t think I ever had a problem with a decent brand hook. I have had problems with line, leaders, rods, reels and myself, but as long as the hook didn’t bend or get the tip flattened Owner, VMC, Gamakatsu have all worked for me. I always think hook failures and problems come from bootleg hooks.
I like owner, but in ewg super line I use fusion19, Eagle claw heavy wire ewg, or X-point.

Yep still would choose VMC fastgrip WG hooks for my fat ikas over any owner hook. If both on sale for a buck a pack Im grabbing the VMC's.

Agreed. In my experience the VMC fastgrips penetrate well and hold well. I thought the point was gimmicky but it sure works great for me. Would never hesitate to recommend or pick up VMC fastgrips for myself.
I like Owner and other hooks too.
Not that long ago every plug (crankbait) sold came with Mustad or Eagle Claw hooks, VMC replaced both mfr's the last 25 years. VMC is the largest treble mfr, now owned by Pure Fishing. What I am saying if you use a crankbait you use VMC hooks unless you change them.
Gamakatsu and Owner started with worm hooks about 30 years ago and have become leaders in the worm hook business, Mustad has tried to regain lost market and Eagle Claw rebranded under Tokar brand. Owner is more popular then Gamakatsu with replacement premium treble hooks and Tokar is making some headway. Mustad has become a lower price hook to appeal to that market and they make good hooks.
VMC vs Owner, is all about price and should be VMC vs Mustad to compare apples to apples and I would choose Mustad over VMC. Owner over Gamakatsu, but that comes down to hook variety to choose from and use both.
My 2 cents to this old thread.

Hey, cut me some slack, I'm playing catch up.

Dont really care who the leader is who is the most popular what the hooks cost. I care about the results I personally get and in my experience VMC catch fish miss less strikes than the owners I have tried. I also choose Gamakatsu Deepthroat over any owner for same reason.
