Last year i lost big fish in my first tournament ever by two ounces using a chatterbait... whats your favorite brand and trailer? also whats the best all around weight?
Chatterbait Pro.
I use a 1/2 oz chatterbait head most of the time. I make my own baits, and have had great luck with them.
Z-man original chatterbait w/ a zoom super fluke as the trailer,1/2oz. is a good all around wieght.
Zman's are junk. Hooks aren't sharp and the skirt always falls off. I like D&M or Siebert. 3/8 oz with a Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper trailer
I make my own and use a 3/8oz almost exclusively. I use almost anything for a trailer but 2/3 of a 5" stick worm works well. My new favorite trailers has been either a Rage Menace or Havoc Pit Boss rigged sideways. Both have a ton of action and have been killer trailers for me and both last through bunches of fish most of the time.

This (although I have yet to have the privialge of using Mike's), but I really like the D&M. I use 3/8 80% of the time with the other 20% at 1/2oz. I also like Skinny Dippers as a trailer I also use Keitech Impacts as well.

I use to use Z Man, but when running it over weeds I would have a problem of catching the skirt.
This coming season I am trying out *** weedless chatters paired with a busier bait super swimmer of the evil twin trailers. Still going to use Z Man though.

Quality product!
Big fan of the Rage Blade. I use a caffeine shad as a trailer.

I just got some of Bluebasser86's bladed jigs, and they are fantastic! I can't wait to use them in the spring. Rage Tail menace grubs, and keitech fat swing impacts will be my trailers of choice!
I really like the booyah blade but the flexible hook is stupid I think.

will you give me a link to these?
I really like the Gambler ones, I cant find them anymore. Found a few in KC at one point a few years ago and got a few.

These are what I use.
I don't think the flexible hook shaft is stupid tho.
If you get a big jumper with any size to her, you're gonna be glad that shaft has a little give to it.
It has been proven to me more than once.
The only problem I've had with it tho is when you get a light hit the hook will shift on you.
When you set the hook do it with a sideways slide with some authority.
The advantage of keeping a heavy jumper on outweighs the chance of the shaft shifing and losing a hook up. Doesn't happen as much as you would think.

Just send Bluebasser86 a PM, or find C&C Custom Baits on Facebook.
I have had nothing but success with the Zman original chatterbait brand. The strike king rage blade no fish. LoL! I don't know what it is with that lure, I just can't get bit. I have tinkered with buying blades and making my own lures, with some success.
I generally use the zman because I can find them anywhere and I'm always losing or breaking them off. Idk what it is with the zman but they always seem to snap away at the head leaving me with the blade. The d&m baits are awesome but a little bit pricey. Depending on the water clarity/ temp i'll switch the color up. I'll go from a zoom fluke to a LFT magic shad and even a single tail grub.

I don't know I have really had issues I can pinpoint and say it was the flexible hook. It's kind of just like if it is so great why only these have them? Plus I also think I would rather not have a hook them moves when you go to set it. It's just weird is all I guess. They do kill it though. I think it's the blade compared to the standard cookie cutter shape you see. I have totally seen it make a difference.
Mike
I started using the rage Blade with a blade minnow and have had some success. I just started using these in August so not for too long.
I caught my PB on a Strike King pure poison chatterbait. In the blk/blue color with a rage craw trailer.

D&M Custom Baits Piranha 3/8 - 1/2 w/Lunker City Grubster Swimbait.
I started with Z-Man 3/8 oz with the supplied split tail trailer. I had good luck, but found I had a hard time keeping them deep. I later bought some 1/2 oz. DM and 5/8 oz. Z-Man Pro baits and tried using some paddle tail type trailers.
I like them all.
Tight lines,
Bob
I use wnybassman's home-made 3/8's chatter bait heads w/blades, I add my own skirt, I use the Z-man skirts that they use on their chatterbaits (they sell them in a 3 pack on TW for $3) and for a trailer, I use a single tail grub, or Havoc grass-pig depending on things LOL
I Have only caught one fish on a Chatter baits. It was the Z-man with a twin tail grub trailer it was black and blue with a green and orange trailer. (Very bluegillish) and trailer hook. First time out with one caught a 4 lber on my first cast about 2 years ago id say and never caught anything sense. I Love the way they swim but after that one fish and not getting even a short strike since my confidence has dwindled greatly.

What you didn't know is that chatterbaits catch more fish without a skirt on them....

Not for me, lol.

Me either. I've tried without the skirt and it just isn't the same, I think the bulk is part of what attracts them.
We can have it both ways!
Try this: Naked blade with a Rage Tail Cut-R trailer, tail down.
I got this tip from a "slightly above average" fisherman in Texas
and it has been working for me!
3/8 is my favorite. its the most versatile weight. You can use it anywhere

I use the Zman chatterbait almost 100% of the time
I love chatterbaits. I usually throw the z-man ones but I just recently got the Strike King rage blade what looks like a chatterbait but I havent used it yet.
The Rage Blade is designed for a slow retrieve near the bottom. An example is
a slow roll with an occasional pop. The Chatterbait can be fished slow, but it is
usually fished faster so there is more water displacement and more often a
reaction bite.
