Here is the deal...
-I want to get into some swimbait fishing and have for a long time
-I have a low budget: I'm 16, don't have a job, and can barely afford to get my lures at Sports Authority or Dick's anyway...
I'm not into these banjo minnows and SK softbaits and stuff: I don't wanna mess around with rigging and I just don't trust these miracle plastics anyhow....
-I am not in California: I am not fishing for the world record in the trout stocked waters of that promised land way out west.. I am in the suburbs of the metro-Atlanta area and I just want to get above 5 or maybe even up to 10 pounds... so I don't think I will be needing a foot long trout on my line.
-I don't have a mast for a rod: based on my low budget I'm stuck with what I got; a buncha medium action rods, spinning and baitcaster, from 6 to 7 ft.
If any of you want to look past all of this anti-swimbait clutter and give me some advice I would SURE appreciate it!!!!

You do know a WW LB was caught out of Georgia right? So don't set your sites to low . Personally I plan on going with a hudelston trout swim bait at local lake that has some trout in it and possibly a blugill swim bait from matt lures for another lake. I plan to go after some monsters this fall after I save up the cash for the lures ;D. So check out matt lures for some swim baits.
Noone knows "Low Budget" better than me but a medium rod just won't throw these baits.
This is a small swimbait that will get you bit. It can be fished on a lighter rod with the treble hook setup. Hook is included.

May I recommend this as well.....

Thanks guys, looks good.
and I'll work on that heavy action rod... no promises though
What lakes do you fish? What types of forage do the lakes have. I know what works as far as swimbaits on most of Atlanta's lakes. Fishing here is different than fishing in California but I do catch fish on big eight and ten inch swimbaits. They are not always the best baits though and I catch plenty of big fish including a fifteen pound twelve ounce fish on baits six inches or less. I am as low budget as they come but it's the biggest waste of money to buy something cheap that don't work. You might need a swimbait rod and you might not. You might just need to fish a different lake or a different location in the lake and use a worm or jig to catch a five to ten pounder. But a swimbait is a good tool and often the best tool when used in the right place and time to catch big fish.

That's sick! Post up the pics!

Mattlures bluegill caught this one out of Lake Varner which is east of Atlanta last year.
Thats one nice fish!
No doubt, that's a monster!
But what impresses me are
those bulging eyes.

PIG!
bassinassassin, i suggest you make your OWN swimbaits to your OWN specifications so they are how YOU want them.

I know you are working on you own project and I hope it turns out
well, but drawing a pattern, cutting your design and painting the
wood doesn't mean you have a "producing lure". You have to start
somewhere, but for most of us it's going to be at the tackle shop or
on the internet, not the lathe.

its really not that difficult.
and the advantages are that you can make it exactly how you want, and its VERY low budget! you might pay 10 bucks in supplies that will be able to make 2 or 3 baits, instead of paying 20+ for one bait.
plus, they are so fun to make ;D
Dave, I hope you catch your new PB on that home made bait.

Dave... its Trey... didn't I TELL you my name on BR??? haha whatever. I already told you I don't have the tools to make one or the money to buy new ones. But I DO hope you get a biggun on that thing!!! ;D
I've done well with the River to Sea V joint minnows which are reasonably priced and catch a lot of fish, done real well on the wake series Chartreuse Shad color, I've also caught some nice ones on the Strike King Shads in the Blue Gill color.I've caught a few over 5 plus on these which are nice size bass in SW Michigan. One last one that I like for conventional eqipment would be the Matt Lures Baby Bass series. Good Luck
haha! i totally forgot your name. for some reason i thought it was logan... :-?
anyway, didnt get anything on it tonight, i need a new rod to cast it. my ugly stick simply wont do!
hey yeah if you find an inexpensive, good rod tell me about it

this is the one im buying: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_20662____SearchResults
its only 25 bucks, and it got good user reviews, so thats good enough for me.
im getting 7' H btw.
sounds good buddy, thanks
MARK MY WORDS....YOU WILL BE SORRY!!!!!!!!
I know you wont litsen untill it happens to you but if you do go out swimbaiting with the wrong gear it WILL I REPEAT IT WILL COST YOU FISH> normal fish is no big deal but your not targeting normal fish. Your targeting big fish and there is a good chance for a lot of you it could be your new personl best you lose becase you are using the wrong/cheap gear.
Also making your own swimbaits is extremly fun and I recomend it for anybody who has skills. However keep in mind while its easy to make a bait, its extremly difficult to make one that is a consistant big fish producer. There are hundreds of swimbaits on the market now and half just plain suck and the other half catch regular fish. There is just a tiny percentage that are proven big bass catcher. The differences my apera subtle to the fisherman but the results are about as different as black and white. some baits have "it" and most dont.
dsaaverda I wish you luck. I hope your new bait produces your PB bass. However dont give up or get frustrated if you never get a bite on it. It happens. I gaurantee if you went in to any REAL swimbait makers shop you would find baits that just didnt cut it. Thats the difference. So many companies just put stuff out to get it out there and make money. Only a few realy test the baits hard and they KNOW they catch fish before they ever sell one.

Ridiculous...
I'm sure everything about this rod sucks.
You might as well just flush $25 down the toliet.

Good advice.
hey mattlures i just ordered a couple of your baby bass lures will i be able to throw them with a MH flippin stick (i think) rated for like 1.5 oz?
i not worried about landing the fish with it because the biggest bass i would have a chance at getting would be like 7lbs i have landed 5lbers with very cheap M spinner gear and this seems to be a much nicer rod
Have you looked at the Sebile Magic Swimmer? The 5" model weighs 3/4oz, which your M rod should be able to handle. I like mine.
Just a thought.
What would the ideal rod be for handling of these swimbaits?
-Randy
Ebby you need to be worried about landing the fish. A swimbait rod has 2 functions. #1 it has to be able to handle the bait. This is easy. It just has to have enough backbone. #2 it has to be able to muscle in big fish and yet still have a soft enough tip to fight the fish. The reason you will lose big bass on an under powered rod is you cant "play" a swimbait bass. they will get away. They are bigger and smarter then average fish. They dive for cover and they know how to jump. The biggest difference is the size and weight of a swimbait creates a ton of leverage for the bass. When a bass jums with a plastic worm stuck in its mouth with a 1/8th ounce weight, it rarley throws the bait. When a bass jumps with a 1.5-80z swimbait flopping back and forth, the hooks tare out and the bait goes flying. You have to hit them hard and keep reeling all the way to the net. This is not the time for playing a fish. Do that while dropshotting.
At a minimum I would recomend a hvy flipping stick, but idealy a medhvy swimbait rod is the best choice. Will your MH flipping stick work? Yes it will but its not ideal. Just remember to use at least 17lb test and crank them in. You controll the fish and try and keep them from jumping. Just ask RoadWarrior he knows.
Matt, I got a look at your new rods. Talk about sweet. Very nice work.
ok well im gonna save up for a swimbait rod but i can't wait to try these out when they get here so im gonna have to use the rod i have for a little while because i leave to go fishing on wed
Don't me mistaken,....a 5 lb bass will suck up a 12" bait like it's a yodel.
In randall's case (small baits/big fish) I think it is more the fact that he knows where they are,....that's the hard part,...not which bait to catch them with
That rod you suggested is a waste of money. I go out with a striper guide to catch some huge stripers on lake martin and smith lake. the first time i went out with him he grabbed a cheap ugly stick and said this is what happens when you catch a 45lb striper with this rod and he broke it in half over the rail of his boat. Then he grabbed a more expensive rod that you could not compare to an ugly stick and did the same thing and he couldnt break it. That bait you make cant be THAT big and the fish you are catching cant be THAT big. That rod wouldnt stand a chance around some really big fish.
