what are your opinions?
1. Take off spinnerbait
2. Tie on shallow running square bill
3. Catch fish
They work
The grass is too thick where I fish in summer. I do know a guy who throws 1/2 oz double willow spinnerbaits from April to November. He does alright but I don't see him often during the dog days.
I rarely fish spinnerbaits but i picked up a few this past week because I thought the lake i have been fishing it would work. Well, it did work and i caught more in my last trip out than i had my previous 3 when i didn't. So with that being said, yeah it will work, maybe
Black spinner with a nickel colorado blade at night is about the extent of my summertime spinnerbait fishing.
Spinnerbaits work great year round. Slow rolling them deep is a good choice this time of year, as is burning them 1 - 2 feet beneath the surface early in the morning or in cloudy conditions when they won't hit a topwater.
I throw one every time I go fishing, they are by far and away my favorite lure to fish and they flat out catch em' for me.
1. tie the spinnerbait back on
2. learn to use it in all conditions
3. catch fish
imo its one of the most versatile and effective lures and like any lure u need to learn to fish it right and itll be yer buddy.. otherwise itll ignore you
I catch more in the fall but I always have one tied on in all seasons and catch em in spring and summer as well.. practically catches at least one for me every trip

I'd rather fish a square bill in the summer.
IMO it is the more versatile bait and is producing better, but everyone's opinion is different, there really isn't a spinnerbait vs square bill debate, there is spinnerbait OR squarebill.
The cottage lake I fish up in here Ontario, Spinnerbait in White or White/Chartreuse - kills. Smallmouth, Pike and largie. Spinnerbait is my go to search bait, I use often. My favorite confidence SB is 3/8oz White/Cht Double Willow. I've lost twice now what could've been my personal best pike on a white/cht SB too. One I lost 10ft out it looks to be close to 40" long and just last Saturday at the same cottage lake, I don't know what I was thinking...it was about an arms length out to the right of me, my jaw dropped in awe when I saw the size of it's head...i stopped reeling, he took the SB right under my kayak...I tried to set the hook and he spit it. It took to me a split second too long to react. Not a bass, but SBs always are tied on for me.
Spinnerbait season for me begins January 1 and ends December 31.
My man Hank Parker made a few nickels with the spinner bait. In the morning, I start with top water. After that, it's the
versatile, for those who know how to use it, spinner bait, one of the most versatile lures in your tackle box.
Old school basser...
Spinnerbaits work all year.
They work. Caught 15 bass last week on one. I like a little wind and some grass.
Spinnerbait/senko?. Spinnerbait/senko?. Spinnerbait/senko?. Spinnerbait/senko?. Spinnerbait/senko?. The only way I choose is how bad the wind is. I guess you now know how I feel.
Weld,
My suggestion to you would be to keep that spinnerbait tied on and to throw it in all the places you wouldn't dare throw a crankbait for fear of losing it.
In some of the ponds down here in South FL the bass become sort of lethargic when the summer water temps get into the 90's. They sort of act like the northern bass act when the water temps drop into the 40's and 50's. Getting them to hit a moving bait is somewhat of a challenge. But you can often get them to commit to sb's early in the morning and late in the evening.
However up North I've found that they will hit sb's all summer long, all day long. Once the sun is up high I would (and did) look for places with shade and tried to cast my sb there. I also always tried to be hitting something with it (fallen trees, bullrushes, dock legs, etc). I'd usually pause the sb when I hit something and let it fall a few inches. Alternatively you can twitch your rod while retrieving the bait. This also changes the rotation of the blades. Most hits seem to occur when your change the rotation od the blades either by stopping or speeding up the retrieve.
Have fun!
Sadly there are some places you just can't get a S-bill through... Like that tall needle grass, spinner baits are perfect for that stuff
The spinner baits is (in mu opinion) THE MOST VERSITILE BAIT ONE CAN USE-- it can be fishing under so many conditions and techniques-It can be used shallow-mid-range -deep-slow fast- Great search bait as well-covers a lot of water quickly and then can be slowed down to fish for the fish that are there once located.
At one time years ago I had no real idea..I thought I knew.. like most guys I see with spinnerbaits nowadays fishing near me.
There is more to spinnerbaiting than cast and retrieve
Once you truely understand all aspects of spinnerbait fishing, it will be hard to disagree that it is the most versatile and so versatile you could judge the conditions and tie a specific spinnerbait on for the trip.. and you could have one tied on year-round
oh yes.. summer
I have a buddy that I fish with weekly that swears by them. I'll usually end up trying them for a while and if they dont produce after 10 or so casts, i'll move on to something else. If one spinner doesn't work for my buddy, he'll take it off and tie on a different color one. He pretty much uses em all day and will switch to a crankbait if a spinner doesn't work after an hour or so. Needless to say, he loves em!!

Can't argue with this advice!!
I agree about the versatility of the spinner baits year round. How many of you use a plastic trailer with sb's?
Hard to beat a spinnerbait for nightfishing.
If I weren't out I'd be fishing with one right now. Maybe it's time to stock up on Wal-Mart spinner baits.
Spinnerbaits work. Glenn here in the very beginning of this site told me about them.
First my thanks to Glenn.
From shore for some reason the smaller spinnerbaits from 1/8oz to 1/4oz work the best for me right now. I'm still learning too.
I use a blue glimmer skirt with a gold Colorado blade, 1/4oz, with a mister twister 4" split double tail white trailer with a trailer hook.
The Mann's classic 1/4oz twin Colorado gold blade spinner bait comes with a blue glimmer skirt just add the skirt and th.
The Mann's classic 1/4oz twin Colorado gold blade in chartreuse spinner bait again add the trailer and th.
I also purchase the blue glimmer skirts and the hot chartreuse skirts for replacements and to setup my 1/8 & 3/16 oz spinnerbaits. I do cut the body on the mister twister 4" split double tail trailer to fit the hook on the smaller spinnerbaits.
The spinner bait MUST run true. That means perfectly vertical. You may need some practice installing the trailer.
Add a shot of yum shad scent and your good to go.
Glenn's true words stay trying them. Don't give up.
We need to learn how to use every lure with success.
We need to learn every presentation with every lure for success.
We need to stay focused and motivated.
Wear polarized glasses and watch your lure when you can see it.
Look for the flashes behind your lure. If the fish are making short strikes behind your lure slow your speed.
Your going to learn that every lure catches fish in the right situation when we use the right color for the water conditions matched with the correct speed for the basses mood.
Pay attention to what the bass are doing.
IMO, a spinnerbaits is a better option than a square bill crank when conditions are favorable for using a movie bait. Those conditions would include cloudy or breezy days, stained to muddy water, low light conditions, etc. And before all the square bill fan(atic)s chime in, let me just say one thing.......You can cover the entire water column with one spinnerbait
I agree and there is only one time in the season where I throw a squarebill over a spinner and that is early spring where theres no weeds and my squarebill can run amok everywhere.. thats when I throw that squarebill and it gives me better hookups w/ the trebles.. and even then I will still throw spinners

This is why the spinnerbait is probably my #1 choice if I could only use one lure.
That isn't to say that squarebills and all cranks don't have their time and place. They do, and in the right conditions they will outproduce a spinnerbait. It's like that with any lure, the conditions dictate lure choice. What caught 10 bass last week might not get a hit this week.
Great lure! I use them all season long and it is a rare day that I don't have my spinnerbait rod on the deck.
I tend not to stay with one lure. I will fan cast the whole area skipping my fan casting around not to spook everything. I do not slam the water. I try to make a gentle cast as it hits the water.
With spinnerbaits the key thing is the speed. I like to use a slow even speed.
Practice circles with your reel handle not egg shape circles. Your lure goes fast then slow then fast again etc. Once you master an even circle with your reel handle your lure action will increase your catches. Trust me on this one. Just watch your lure change speed with the egg shaped movement of your crank.
Shore fishing isn't so tough when we do it right.
I have only caught 2 bass on spinnerbaits since it got hot here. Its like somebody flipped a switch or something. I'm hoping it will pick back up in the fall.
I don't mind hearing people say they don't like spinnerbaits. It generally means more fish for me.
